Rising Costs Of Higher Education In United States And Student Debt, Mona Muzammil, Muzammil Arshad, Washain Muzammil Aug 2025

Rising Costs Of Higher Education In United States And Student Debt, Mona Muzammil, Muzammil Arshad, Washain Muzammil

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

100 years ago, college tuition at prestigious Ivy League colleges such as Harvard and Brown was about $130 per year. Even when adjusted for inflation, today's cost of higher education has increased dramatically to the point where a college education is shifting further out of reach for many Americans. This book explains the essential concepts in the debate regarding the staggering costs of higher education, supplying ten original essays by higher education policy experts, a lively historical narrative that provides context to current issues, and systematic guides to find additional sources of information on the subject.

Identification, Abundance, And Behavior Of North American Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) Along Road Mitigation Structures Designed For Endangered Species In South Texas, Victoria Hanley, Kevin W. Ryer, Md. Saydur Rahman, John H. Young Jr., Richard J. Kline

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

Endangered species are increasingly used as the target species in implementing and constructing new wildlife crossing structures (WCS). Highways in South Texas fragment the landscape and result in high road mortality for endangered species such as ocelots (Leopardus pardalis, a medium-sized spotted wild cat). In response, the Texas Department of Transportation constructed nine WCS on Farm-to-Market 106 (FM 106), a road which bisects Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in Cameron County, Texas. With ocelots being rare and elusive, bobcats (Lynx rufus) are often used as a surrogate species to study felid behavior at road mitigation structures …

Epidemiological-Based Study Of Sars-Cov-2 In Faisalabad, Sana Ullah, Muhammad Waseem Khan, Qurat-Ul- Ain, Khushbu Farva, Niaz Muhammad Khan, Hayat Ullah

Biological Engineering Student Research

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) raced around the world across different populations; there needs to be a consolidated effort to understand the divergence of the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2. Population-based epidemiological characteristics studies measure the extent of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a country. The current research study was designed to report epidemiological data from Pakistan. For this purpose, 246 SARS-CoV-2-infected patients were included in the study. For SARS-CoV-2 confirmation, viral samples were collected from all the study participants; SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed by viral nucleic acid detection using a nucleic acid detection kit. After SARS-CoV-2 confirmation, all the study participants …

Spatially Resolved Kinematics Of Slacs Lens Galaxies. I. Data And Kinematic Classification, Shawn Knabel, Tommaso Treu, Michele Cappellari, Anowar J. Shajib, Chih-Fan Chen, Simon Birrer, Vardha N. Bennert Aug 2025

Spatially Resolved Kinematics Of Slacs Lens Galaxies. I. Data And Kinematic Classification, Shawn Knabel, Tommaso Treu, Michele Cappellari, Anowar J. Shajib, Chih-Fan Chen, Simon Birrer, Vardha N. Bennert

Physics

We obtain spatially resolved kinematics with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) integral-field spectrograph for a sample of 14 massive (11 < log₁₀(M₍★₎/M☉) < 12) lensing early-type galaxies at z ∼ 0.15–0.35 from the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey. We integrate kinematic maps within the galaxy effective radius and examine the rotational and dispersion velocities, showing that 11/14 can be classified as slow rotators. The data set is unprecedented for galaxy-scale strong lenses in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), sampling, and calibration, vastly superseding previous studies. We find the primary contributions to systematic uncertainties to be the stellar template library and wavelength range of the spectral fit. Systematics …

Critique, Postcritique And Libraries, Mark E. Eaton Aug 2025

Critique, Postcritique And Libraries, Mark E. Eaton

Publications and Research

This paper, adopting a perspective from the recent literature of “postcritique”, finds that criticism in librarianship can be constructively supplemented with other methodological approaches. Instead of exclusively using criticism to analyze, dismantle and find fault with texts, librarianship can expand its perspectives to find new reparative possibilities of care. Following the work of Nicholas Holm, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Bruno Latour, Rita Felski and others, we can see that while criticism has thrived as a disposition in librarianship and elsewhere, recent scholarly interventions suggest that it is not the only possible approach. This paper ultimately argues that a postcritical disposition can …

Analytical Characterization Of Artemisinin And Its Derivatives Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Electrochemistry Reduction, And Fluorescence, Faraja Ombwayo Aug 2025

Analytical Characterization Of Artemisinin And Its Derivatives Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Electrochemistry Reduction, And Fluorescence, Faraja Ombwayo

Theses and Dissertations

Artemisinin and derivatives were subjected to 37°C and room temperature conditions. When HPLC-UV analysis of both conditions was performed, there were differences in both conditions which suggested that artemisinin and derivatives degrade at 37°C. When artemisinin was electrochemically reduced, new peaks were generated and LC-MS analysis of the reduced artemisinin indicated that either new molecules or molecular reorganization was formed. These electrochemical reduction molecules (products) were deemed analogous to the artemisinin reduction occurring in-vivo after oral administration. Fluorescence analysis of artemisinin and derivatives were performed in the presence of dipyridamole. Dipyridamole intensity was observed to decrease when artemisinin or its …

Probing The Effect Of Peg-Dna Interactions And Buffer Viscosity On Tethered Dna In Shear Flow, Fatema Tuz Zohra, Huda Al-Zuhairi, Jefferson Reinoza, Hyeongjun Kim, Andreas Hanke

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

DNA flow-stretching is a widely employed, powerful technique for investigating the mechanisms of DNA-binding proteins involved in compacting and organizing chromosomal DNA. We combine single-molecule DNA flow-stretching experiments with Brownian dynamics simulations to study the effect of the crowding agent polyethylene glycol (PEG) in these experiments. PEG interacts with DNA by an excluded volume effect, resulting in compaction of single, free DNA molecules in PEG solutions. In addition, PEG increases the viscosity of the buffer solution. By stretching surface-tethered bacteriophage lambda DNA in a flow cell and tracking the positions of a quantum dot labeled at the free DNA end …

Flash Communication: Visible-Light-Driven, Cobalt-Mediated Selective C–H Arylation Of 2,2′-Bipyridine, Xi Chen, Eric R. Allen, Mckenzie L. Stack, Zachary M. Garozzo, Dian Wang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Herein, we report a visible-light-driven, cobalt-mediated, highly selective C–H arylation method to afford aryl-2,2′-bipyridine, a widely used class of ancillary ligands in transition metal catalysis. This arylation reaction exhibits good-to-excellent C6 selectivity for a variety of aryl groups, allowing for isolation of the 6-isomer in its pure form. Mechanistic studies provided evidence for the generation of an aryl radical by the joint action of [Co(bpy)3] species and visible light, enabling arylation under mild conditions. Compared to previous work, this method employs cost-effective reagents and provides one-step, direct access from 2,2′-bipyridine to a broad range of electronically varied 6-aryl-2,2′-bipyridine …

Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations

People who strongly value family ties may see family support and interconnection as a reason to discourage women from seeking abortion. At the same time, sexist beliefs are often linked to negative views on abortion. Hostile and benevolent sexism are typically associated with anti-abortion sentiment; hostile sexism conceptualizes abortion as a challenge to traditional gender roles and benevolent sexism conceptualizes abortion as a rejection of women's "natural" role as mothers. We examine how these two belief systems-familism and sexism-are linked to attitudes toward legal abortion among Latinx and non-Latinx U.S. adults. We used a national survey of 3,046 adults (1,183 …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Iron Metabolism And Overload, Aditi Tayal, Jasmeen Kaur, Robert W. Maitta Aug 2025

Molecular Mechanisms Of Iron Metabolism And Overload, Aditi Tayal, Jasmeen Kaur, Robert W. Maitta

Faculty Scholarship

Iron represents an essential element required for normal physiologic processes throughout organ systems. A vast network of transporters is involved not only in uptake of this element but in processing, oxidation, and recycling to maintain it in a tight balance to avoid excess storage. This complex network of transporters, including heme and ferroportin, among many others, are responsible for facilitating inter-organ tissue iron exchange and availability, contributing to overall heme homeostasis. However, exposure to high levels of iron can overwhelm compensatory mechanisms that result in its accumulation and toxicity. This is the case of patients with genetic diseases such as …

Progressive Respiratory Failure In A Term Neonate With Abca3 Surfactant Deficiency: Beyond The Common Causes Of Respiratory Distress, Andrew M Beverstock, Hillary C Lee, David S Moreno Mcneill, Morcos Hanna Aug 2025

Progressive Respiratory Failure In A Term Neonate With Abca3 Surfactant Deficiency: Beyond The Common Causes Of Respiratory Distress, Andrew M Beverstock, Hillary C Lee, David S Moreno Mcneill, Morcos Hanna

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background

Most cases of respiratory distress in term neonates are due to transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), or air leak syndromes. Genetic surfactant deficiencies are rare causes of respiratory distress. Among these, mutations in the ABCA3 gene disrupt surfactant metabolism and can lead to severe, treatment-refractory respiratory failure. While commonly considered in preterm infants, surfactant dysfunction should also be considered in term infants with unexplained and persistent hypoxemia.

Case

We present a case of a 38-weeks term female infant with fetal growth restriction who developed respiratory distress shortly after birth. She initially responded to continuous …

Mri-Guided Focused Ultrasound Thalamotomy For Neuropathic Pain In An Adolescent With Cranial Metastases: Illustrative Case, Sarah G Van Winkle, Danika L Paulo, Ashwin Viswanathan, Daniel Curry, Nisha Gadgil

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Neuropathic cancer pain (NCP) is a debilitating condition that is often refractory to conventional medical management. MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) central lateral thalamotomy (CLT) is an incisionless neurosurgical option for neuropathic pain palliation, but its use in pediatric patients and those with cranial metastases, a relative contraindication to MRgFUS, remains largely unexamined.

Observations: A 16-year-old male with metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) with numerous cranial metastases experienced severe, diffuse, refractory NCP. The patient underwent bilateral CLT with MRgFUS. After the procedure, the patient experienced complete and durable resolution of his neuropathic pain. He only reported occasional somatic pain at sites of …

Background: Interleukin-22 is a cytokine involved in mucosal immunity, whereas interleukin-22 binding protein is a soluble receptor that can potently block interleukin-22. The role of interleukin-22 and interleukin-22 binding protein in trauma remains unclear. This study investigates whether IL-22 levels are associated with intubation in patients with trauma. We hypothesized interleukin-22 levels would be lower in intubated patients. Methods: Plasma samples were prospectively obtained in the trauma bay at consecutive Level 1 activations from November 2021 to November 2022. Patients were categorized as having respiratory failure (intubated) or as controls (nonintubated). Two-to-one case-control matching was conducted based on age, sex, …

"The Cake Is A Lie:" Locating Loot Boxes In Indian Gaming Framework, Aman Gupta, Samriddh Sharma

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

Lootboxes have become endemic in modern video games. These microtransactions allow users to purchase virtual containers without knowing their content, which is determined by chance. There have been increasing concerns about the negative impact of loot-box purchases on mental health and whether these amount to gambling under various laws. In response, several countries have started applying existing gambling laws or legislating new measures to regulate lootboxes. This raises questions about the present state of regulations in the Indian context and whether they are adequate in meeting the risks posed by lootboxes. In the present article, the authors explain the concept …

Steering Indian Financial Services Towards Digital Operational Resilience: A Cross-Sectoral Approach, Vaibhav Vijay Nishad, Smruti Kulkarni Aug 2025

Steering Indian Financial Services Towards Digital Operational Resilience: A Cross-Sectoral Approach, Vaibhav Vijay Nishad, Smruti Kulkarni

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

In India, among the three financial regulators, RBI’s recent focus on creating a robust ICT risk management framework has been at the forefront of the country’s digital operational resilience strategy. The continuous cyber threats and recent digital operational failures have highlighted the need for further enhancements to strategies that establish strong ICT risk management. Addressing these cybersecurity vulnerabilities requires more than prescriptive rules; it demands holistic, flexible, adaptive, and coordinated regulatory approaches to strengthen digital operational resilience. This paper analyses the key issues that need resolution to advance these efforts. We identify the misalignment of economic incentives for compliance as …

Centring Marginalisation In The Development Of Digital Courts: Reflections From Argentina, India, Kenya, And Malaysia, Siddharth Peter De Souza, Varsha Aithala, Francisco Mignaquy, Mercy Muendo, Anisha Nadkarni

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

This paper presents a multi-jurisdictional analysis of digitalisation of justice and the perceived role of courts as public institutions upholding the rule of law and ensuring access to justice to all. Using selected examples from Argentina, India, Kenya and Malaysia, it examines the impact of digitalisation efforts of these countries on their citizens, marginalised populations, the State and private sector. We propose to design an approach to digital justice that centres people on the margins of digital transformation of courts. This includes three elements – first, engagement with people centered perspectives; second, focus on disadvantage and addressing socio-technical factors; and …

From ‘Gig Work’ To Algorithmically Mediated Work: Shifting The Focus To Technological Control In Work Regulation, Jasoon Chelat Aug 2025

From ‘Gig Work’ To Algorithmically Mediated Work: Shifting The Focus To Technological Control In Work Regulation, Jasoon Chelat

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

Platform-based work is finding a place in legislative instruments in India in recent years, under the Code on Social Security, 2020, as well as state-level legislations. In this paper, I argue that these efforts to extend protections to gig or platform work are limited in their understanding of the way work is shaped by digital technologies both within and outside of platforms. Platform-based work regulation seems to have skipped a step: the regulatory discourse has moved on to a welfare-focused model present in informal work, without examining existing jurisprudence on worker rights relevant to digitally mediated work. These legislative instruments …

In The Pursuance Of A Robust Legal Framework To Address Deepfake Harms: An Analysis Of The Indian Legal Discourse, Jyothsna Gurumurthy

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

A common issue we face in the field of law and technology is the constant game of catch-up that the law is required to play to keep up with advances in technology. Deepfake Technology (primarily based on generative adversarial networks, as explored in this article) exemplifies this game of catch-up and provides a fertile ground for academics and regulators/law makers to explore and understand what it means for a technology regulating law or rule to be robust and enforceable. By examining the judicial handling of deepfake claims within a publicity rights discourse in India, this article suggests the adoption of …

Merger Remedies Unbound, Dhruv Aggarwal, Albert H. Choi, Geeyoung Min Aug 2025

Merger Remedies Unbound, Dhruv Aggarwal, Albert H. Choi, Geeyoung Min

Law & Economics Working Papers

How should foundational contract law doctrines apply to corporate mergers? This Article argues that recent changes in Delaware law grant parties expansive contractual freedom to define their preferred remedies in merger agreements, untethered from the limits imposed by traditional contract law. A new provision in the Delaware corporate code permits penalty clauses in merger agreements, departing from the traditional “anti-penalty doctrine” that forbids punitive liquidated damages in contract. Delaware courts have also shown deference to specific performance provisions, treating them as presumptively enforceable commitments instead of retaining their traditional judicial discretion over the choice of remedies. Given that Delaware law …

Disparitas Pengenaan Sanksi Denda Oleh Komisi Pengawas Persaingan Usaha Atas Keterlambatan Notifikasi Pengambilalihan Saham, Metta Yoelandani

Technology and Economics Law Journal

This research discusses the disparity in the imposition of administrative sanctions in cases of late notification of share acquisitions within the framework of Competition Law in Indonesia. However, in practice, disparities in the imposition of sanctions between cases are frequently encountered, caused by the absence of clear provisions detailing the calculation of administrative sanctions for business actors who are late in submitting notifications. In several cases, it was found that business actors with longer delays were subjected to lighter fines compared to those with shorter delays, thereby creating disparities in the imposition of sanctions. The purpose of this research is …

The Legal Implications Of The Altman Z-Score As A Tool For Bankruptcy Prevention Through The Case Study Of Pt. Sri Rejeki Isman Tbk (Sritex), Samuel Baringin Doloksaribu

Technology and Economics Law Journal

Indonesia’s bankruptcy law, as regulated by Law No. 37 of 2004, allows debtors to be declared bankrupt based solely on the existence of two creditors and one unpaid debt, without requiring a substantive assessment of their financial health, raising concerns about fairness, legal certainty, and economic impact. This thesis investigates whether predictive financial models such as the Altman Z-Score can be integrated into Indonesia’s legal framework to improve early detection and prevention of corporate insolvency. The central question is how these models can be legally recognized and implemented, and what challenges or reforms are necessary to facilitate their use. Employing …
