In this commentary, Baldomero discusses his beliefs about language and why he presented at the conference in his Maya language. To Baldomero, Maya language preservation has profound connections to the integral being of the Maya, and language preservation should be much more than mere academic research and information collection. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, adolescents spent time in social isolation from their peers due to periods of mandated lockdown. It was unclear how social media use during lockdown could have influenced adolescents’ mental health after the pandemic. Psychosocial development theory and self-socialization theory formed the theoretical framework for this study. This study examined 158 adolescents aged 13-17 who experienced lockdowns and movement restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The independent variables were a) the social media sites most frequented during lockdowns, and b) the purposes of their use. This thesis explores the role of personal fragrance as a cultural marker in the 19th-century American South, examining how scent reflected identity, status, and social norms in a region shaped by colonialism, capitalism, and religious influence. Drawing on historical sources, botanical knowledge, and public history practices, the project traces the evolution of fragrance from home-crafted perfumes to mass-marketed products, highlighting how access to scent was shaped by race, class, and gender. Paleoclimate proxies, including groundwater, tree rings, ice, deep-sea sediments, and speleothems, have identified climate changes of various magnitudes throughout Earth’s history. Previous research has utilized noble gas temperatures and radiocarbon (14C) dating of groundwater to understand prehistoric climate, and the groundwater under Shelby County, Tennessee, is ideal for obtaining high-precision paleoclimate data for the south-central region of North America. This research derived groundwater recharge temperatures ranging from Pleistocene and Holocene ages utilizing available noble gas data modeled with the program PANGA. The program estimated paleotemperatures using inverse modeling with the unfractionated excess air (UA) and closed-system equilibration (CE) model. The …

Melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer, is commonly associated with mutations in the BRAF gene, particularly BRAF^V600E, which drives tumor proliferation via the ERK1/2 signaling cascade. While BRAF inhibitors initially demonstrate efficacy, therapeutic resistance remains a significant challenge. Emerging evidence implicates the cAMP signaling pathway, particularly the cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and its repressor, inducible cAMP early repressor (ICER), in melanoma progression and drug resistance. ICER, a transcriptional repressor regulated via Ras/MAPK-mediated phosphorylation and ubiquitination, is degraded in melanoma, undermining its tumor-suppressive role. Across the globe, residents of many democracies worry that their public officials threaten the rule of law. But what, precisely, does that mean? Much of the literature on what the rule of law requires focuses on what it demands when government interacts with private parties. This article examines what I call the public rule of law, asking what the rule of law has to say about how public power is organized and exercised.

BACKGROUND: Interactions with the criminal legal system (CLS), such as through arrest or incarceration, are relatively common in the United States (US) and are increasingly recognized as social risk factors for poor mental health. Previous studies have reported a positive association between CLS involvement and poor mental health, with some theoretical frameworks, including the ecosocial theory and the stress process paradigm, supporting a plausible causal relationship. Background: Multifrequency bioelectrical impedance devices such as the InBody 770 (IB770) offer faster measurements and lower costs compared with other body composition assessments. This study validated measures from IB770 against the deuterium oxide dilution technique (D2O) and DXA and compared a four-compartment (4C) model using total body water (TBW) derived from IB770 compared with D2O. Methods: A total of 55 adult females (mean ± SD, age: 21.1 ± 2.6 years) completed IB770 and DXA scans and the D2O protocol. Lin’s concordance correlation coefficients (CCCs), Bland–Altman analyses, and other equivalence tests evaluated agreement between IB770 and the criterion for measures of …

Inner ear organoids represent a potentially inexhaustible source of otic tissues, including sensory hair cells and supporting cells, for in vitro manipulation. Here, we present a protocol for labeling S-phase entry of cells in inner ear organoids using 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU), followed by fixation and vibratome sectioning. Nuclear EdU is then detected alongside protein markers of interest via immunofluorescence. This workflow enables the visualization of cell and tissue morphologies within developing organoids and assessment of how different manipulations affect cell proliferation.

Purpose

The purpose of this project was to evaluate whether identifying delirium through the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU (CAM-ICU) assessment followed by treating delirium positive patients with the ICU Liberation Bundle reduced ventilator days or length of ICU stay and increased nursing satisfaction.

Background

ICU delirium is an acute state of confusion that affects up to 80% of ICU patients and increases morbidity and mortality. Decreasing the occurrence of delirium increases patient survivability and improves patient care (Society of Critical Care Medicine, 2023). There is currently no gold standard for managing and treating ICU delirium.

PURPOSE This quality improvement (QI) initiative aimed to reduce 30-day psychiatric readmission rates among adults experiencing homelessness by 10% over a 3-month period. Secondary goals included a 15% improvement in medication adherence and completion of follow-up visits.

BACKGROUND Individuals experiencing homelessness and mental illness face higher risks of psychiatric decompensation and hospital readmission. At Houston Behavioral Hospital, 13.34% of psychiatric readmissions involved unhoused individuals, highlighting limitations in standard discharge planning.

Accurate measurement of PM_2.5 composition is of global importance. Evaporation-induced mass loss introduces potential bias in filter-based PM_2.5 measurements, with ammonium nitrate volatilization from Teflon filters being a major contributor to negative mass artifacts. Previous studies have demonstrated that using an acid gas denuder in combination with nylon filters can help recover the nitrate mass. This study evaluates design modifications to the AirPhoton sampling station setup within the globally distributed Surface Particulate Matter Network (SPARTAN) incorporating an additional acid gas denuder upstream and a nylon filter downstream of the existing Teflon filter.

Parental communication about body weight and shape is associated with offspring’s eating behaviors and body image. However, predictors of parental weight/shape communication are less known. The present study explored whether direct (i.e., comments to the child about their weight and encouragement to diet) and indirect (i.e., modeling of the importance of body weight/shape via parent’s own dieting and comments about their own weight) communication about weight, shape, and eating from parents in childhood predicted women’s direct and indirect communication about weight/shape to their own child in adulthood.
