Background

Chagas disease is a chronic, insidious parasitic infection (Trypanosoma cruzi) that slowly develops to irreversible organomegaly over several decades. The disease is traditionally acquired in endemic Latin American countries during childhood; < 1% of foreign-born adult residents in the United States have been diagnosed or treated with this potentially fatal disease. Low physician knowledge is a primary factor leading to misdiagnosis.

Methods

Starting in April 2022, a 4-part T cruzi clinical education intervention began, which included (i) 2 grand rounds presentations to >100 internal medicine providers; (ii) implementation of a “clinical Chagas champions program” incorporating 14 key clinical staff at varying departments and administrative levels educated on their specific role related to T cruzi screening, diagnosis confirmation, clinical management, and medical billing; ( …

Time-Evolved Constant Voltage Conductivity Measurements Of Common Spaceborne Polymeric Materials, Brian Wood, David King, Jr Dennison

Long-duration current measurements were made for low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyimide (PI), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), and biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) to determine their bulk conductivity near room temperature as a function of time. These common thin-film spacecraft material samples were vacuum baked to remove moisture and volatile contaminants to better simulate space conditions. The constant voltage conductivity (CVC) method used a very stable, low-noise dc voltage source and measured the resulting current in a parallel plate geometry. Due to the extremely low conductivity of these four polymeric materials, extended experiments of up to ten days were necessary to establish equilibrium …

The recent upsurge in environmental awareness provokes the widespread usage of green materials in sustainable electronic applications. Herein, the effects of spent coffee grounds (SCGs) on natural rubber (NR)-based resistive switching (RS) memory are systematically investigated. This study presents the fabrication of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure using NR incorporated with SCGs (0 to 8 wt.%) as a memristive layer and sandwiched between electrodes. A significant improvement in the ON/OFF ratio from 10⁴ for pure NR to 10⁷, read memory window increased from 2.03 to 2.45 V with improved stability even after 130 cycles of switching is achieved …

This study examined the role of warehouse management practices on the retail supermarkets' performance in Uganda. The study was guided by Dynamic Capabilities Theory and empirical literature to develop research hypotheses. The study employed a cross-sectional research design with a quantitative approach, and a structured questionnaire was used as the main instrument for data collection. The study used partial least squares structural equation modelling aided by Smart PLS to validate measures of constructs employed in the model and test the hypotheses using data from 100 key respondents from warehouse and operations units of retail supermarkets in Uganda. Textiles can often be found damaged in forensic casework, and analysis of these defects can yield valuable information. Different methods of fiber fracture leave behind varying alterations in structure on individual fiber ends, leading to their possible identification and connection to a case. Interactions between high-speed impacts and synthetic fabrics composed of thermoplastic fibers are classified as rapid shear or high-speed tensile breaks. In these situations, unique fiber end characteristics can form due to excessive heat generation that is unable to dissipate quickly enough to prevent fiber end morphology from changing.

Maya America Volume 7 Issue 1 presents essays, commentaries, and literature that directly or indirectly address our theme for this journal issue: “Maya Cosmic Health.” The authors examine various topics of health, and the collective work addresses the meaning of health as understood through Maya cosmovision. The editors of this special issue aim to encourage bridge-building between Maya health cosmovision and biomedical or psychological practitioners. Medical providers in the United States who discuss the use of contraceptives with Maya women migrants might discover strong reluctance and complex beliefs about the social and physical benefits of biomedical contraceptive measures. This research report presents information about contraceptive usage among Maya in Guatemala and how usage or attitudes toward contraception might have changed while living in the United States. The research team, during 2024, interviewed six adult female Guatemalan Maya refugees over Zoom to understand their thoughts toward contraceptive use before and after migrating. Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in the United States that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, leaving millions without access to nutritious meals. In 2023 alone, over 50 million people turned to food assistance programs for additional support1. While traditional nutrition programs like food banks and soup kitchens provide a vital service to many communities, they often lack the capacity to address the multifaceted nature of hunger. Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, affecting over 20.5 million adults. Previous studies link health behaviors – such as dietary behavior, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption – to CHD risk. These studies typically use surveys and interviews, which, despite their benefits, are resource-intensive and limited by small sample sizes. Using large-scale national level anonymized smartphone-based location data, our study examines whether health behaviors that are proxy measured by place visitation are associated with CHD prevalence across US census tracts. Modern composite materials promise superior performance and load-bearing capabilities, yet evaluating their structural integrity remains challenging. Current testing methods, such as visual, thermographic, ultrasonic, optical, electromagnetic, terahertz, shearography, X-ray, and neutron imaging, are hampered by long scan durations, limited field of view, suboptimal accuracy, and high costs, particularly when applied to large structures.

This paper addresses these issues by introducing a novel robotic multimodal imaging system that overcomes the limitations of traditional methods. Mitochondrial fission and fusion appear to be relatively infrequent in cardiac cells compared to other cell types; however, the proteins involved in these events are highly expressed in adult cardiomyocytes (ACM). Therefore, these proteins likely have additional non-canonical roles. We have previously shown that DRP1 not only participates in mitochondrial fission processes but also regulates mitochondrial bioenergetics in cardiac tissue. However, it is still unknown where the DRP1 that does not participate in mitochondrial fission is located and what its role is at those non-fission spots. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, adolescents spent time in social isolation from their peers due to periods of mandated lockdown. It was unclear how social media use during lockdown could have influenced adolescents’ mental health after the pandemic. Psychosocial development theory and self-socialization theory formed the theoretical framework for this study. This study examined 158 adolescents aged 13-17 who experienced lockdowns and movement restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The independent variables were a) the social media sites most frequented during lockdowns, and b) the purposes of their use. This thesis explores the role of personal fragrance as a cultural marker in the 19th-century American South, examining how scent reflected identity, status, and social norms in a region shaped by colonialism, capitalism, and religious influence. Drawing on historical sources, botanical knowledge, and public history practices, the project traces the evolution of fragrance from home-crafted perfumes to mass-marketed products, highlighting how access to scent was shaped by race, class, and gender. Paleoclimate proxies, including groundwater, tree rings, ice, deep-sea sediments, and speleothems, have identified climate changes of various magnitudes throughout Earth’s history. Previous research has utilized noble gas temperatures and radiocarbon (14C) dating of groundwater to understand prehistoric climate, and the groundwater under Shelby County, Tennessee, is ideal for obtaining high-precision paleoclimate data for the south-central region of North America. This research derived groundwater recharge temperatures ranging from Pleistocene and Holocene ages utilizing available noble gas data modeled with the program PANGA. The program estimated paleotemperatures using inverse modeling with the unfractionated excess air (UA) and closed-system equilibration (CE) model. The …
