The Case For Using Student-Generated Goals To Cultivate Strong Readers, Heather Anne Wyman

Theses and Dissertations

This mixed-methods action research study explored how to motivate seventh-grade students to become stronger readers. I empowered my students by giving them the autonomy to set their own Lexile goals and develop plans to reach them, offering goal-setting lessons along with feedback and support. Students were motivated to meet the goals they created. Lexile assessment data from two benchmark periods enabled me to determine students’ growth, and survey and interview data helped me to determine their perceptions of their increase in self-efficacy and motivation to achieve. While most students did not meet their self-identified Lexile goals, most made academic progress, …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

The lymphatic system is critical to the body's immune and circulatory system, and lymphangiogenesis, the development of new lymphatic vessels from pre-existing ones is a significant process capitalized upon by cancer during tumorigenesis. Decorin is a small leucine-rich proteoglycan which we have previously shown to be anti-tumorigenic and a suppressor of lymphangiogenesis. We have also shown that decorin exercises its anticancer properties through its ability to evoke autophagy. Through a comprehensive and unbiased proteomic analysis, we explored the implications of decorin exposure on protein expression within mouse lymphatic endothelial cells. We discovered that decorin enriches several protein pathways, notably proteasomal …

Flatness-Based Active Disturbance Rejection Control With B-Spline Output Regulation For A Chemical Reactor, Qasim M. Hamad, Safanah M. Raafat

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

Model uncertainties and exogenous disturbances are inherent phenomena in chemical plants that degrade performance and lead to poor-quality products. To mitigate these Issues, this paper addresses disturbances by exploiting the differential flatness property (DFP) of the nonlinear continuous stirred tank reactor (NCSTR). A two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) control design was implemented, incorporating flatness-based feedforward and feedforward and feedback controllers. This design leverages the differential flatness method for effective stabilization and tracking performance. A robust feedback tracking control strategy integrating a disturbance observer (DO) and a simple feedback controller was implemented to form a flatness active disturbance rejection control (FADRC) scheme. The B-spline …

Group-Based Sample Partitioning Knn: A Computationally Efficient Knn Algorithm For Resource-Constrained Environments, Ayad M. Dalloo, Amjad J. Humaidi

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

The k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN) algorithm is widely used for classification due to its simplicity and effectiveness. However, its computational cost remains a significant challenge, particularly for embedded systems with limited processing power and memory. To address this Issue, we propose the Group-Based Sample Partitioning (k²NN) Algorithm, which introduces a two-phase approach to reduce computational complexity while maintaining classification accuracy. In the first phase, the algorithm pre-groups training samples by iteratively selecting anchor points and partitioning their k-nearest neighbors, thereby reducing redundancy in the dataset. In the second phase, the test sample dynamically selects local anchor points, constructing a smaller, more …

Deep fake videos are a threat to information integrity by using advanced deep learning techniques to manipulate visual content and make it hard to distinguish from real videos. This includes videos where a person’s image is changed or replaced using deep learning techniques. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach for deep fake video detection that combines spatial and temporal features. We use a pre-trained VGG16 to extract deep spatial features from individual frames, and then global average pooling at both spatial and temporal level to convert variable length video sequences into fixed dimensional representations. A fully connected classifier …

Visual-Enhanced Multimodal Framework For Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem, Peng Zhao, Zhiguang Cao, Di Wang, Wen Song, Wei Pang, You Zhou, Yuan Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multimodal models leverage complementary information across modalities to enrich feature representations. While visual information shows potential in representing structure for some combinatorial optimization problems (COPs), its application to complex scheduling like the Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) remains underexplored. Current learning-based FJSP solvers predominantly rely on handcrafted state features. This dependence can lead to inconsistencies and may not fully capture the problem's intricate dynamics. Crucially, these methods overlook visual modalities. Visual representations offer a distinct advantage by inherently capturing the global topological structure and complex resource interactions within the FJSP state. Unlike localized handcrafted features, this holistic, structural view …

Saudi Medical Journal

ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate the association between Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Ischemic heart disease (IHD). Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis included patients with and without IBD seen at the outpatient gastroenterology clinic of a large tertiary care hospital between January 2015 and October 2022. The primary outcome was the association between IBD and IHD, and the secondary outcome was predictors of IHD in patients with IBD. Results: The study included 400 patients; 291 were IBD patients, and 109 had other non-inflammatory GI disorders. The IBD group displayed significantly lower rates of hyperlipidemia (8.6% vs. 30.3%, p <0.001), diabetes mellitus (DM) (10% vs. 24.8%, p <0.001), and hypertension (11.7% vs. 32.1%, p <0.001) compared to the non-IBD group. Only 2.7% (n=8) of IBD patients developed IHD. Logistic regression analysis did not demonstrate a significant association between IBD and IHD ( p =0.932). Among classical risk factors, only hypertension (OR: 26.2, 95% CI: 2.14–661, p =0.016) and hyperlipidemia (OR: 10.5, 95% CI: 1.32–132, p =0.0405) significantly increased the risk of developing IHD among patients with IBD. Conclusion: In this cohort, there is no increased risk of developing IHD in patients with IBD compared to non-IBD patients.
