Al-Driven Interfacial Gap Prediction In Overlapped Al/Cu Laser Weld Joint For Battery Applications, Hyeonhee Kim, Sanghoon Kang, Cheolhee Kim, Yong Hoon Jang, Minjung Kang

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The battery tab-to-busbar welding process forms the primary electrical path in battery packs and is directly linked to both performance and safety. Variations in jig alignment, material tolerance, and forming quality can cause small interfacial gaps that lead to weak welds. An artificial intelligence (AI)-driven method was proposed in this study for predicting interfacial gaps in aluminum-copper overlap joints by integrating deep learning with multi-sensor data. A charge-coupled device (CCD) camera, spectrometer, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) sensors were employed to develop and validate deep learning models under varying gap conditions. The results revealed that the variation in melt-pool dimensions, …

Method Of Demand Forecasting And Dynamic Equilibrium Of Computing Resources For Grid Distribution And Consumption Tasks Based On State Iteration, Tiantian Cai, Junjian Chen, Ming Hu, Xiaohua Li, Zexiang Cai

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

Distributed objects on the distribution side of the network are currently massively assessed so that the tasks carried by the grid distribution and consumption terminal present the characteristics of multiple time scales and large differences in demand, which leads to the complex equilibrium problem of random fluctuation in the computing resource demand.Traditional terminals are limited by the fixed application scenarios and relatively certain resource allocation, and the terminals can only adapt passively through the “quantity for quality ” method, which is unable to solve the persistent contradiction of imbalance between the supply and demand of computing resources in terminals from the root. Therefore,a method …

Feedforward Strategy Of Adaptive Improvement For Grid -Connected Inverter With Extremely Weak Grid, Tieying Zhao, Peijian Tian, Junran Li, Zhiyuan Huang, Yuang Qi

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

With an extremely weak grid,grid-connected inverters introduce the grid voltage proportional feedforward control strategy to enhance the amplitude gain in the low-frequency band and suppress the background harmonic interference of the grid. However, when the impedance parameter of the grid increases, the phase margin of the system significantly decreases, and instability occurs.Based on the impedance characteristic analysis method, the internal mechanism of the deterioration of the system ’s phase margin is first revealed, and then proposes to connect a second-order low-pass filter on the feedforward channel in series to improve the system ’s phase margin and retain its gain effect at low frequencies as much as …

Sticker Shock Due Process, Alex Dougherty Neumann Oct 2025

Sticker Shock Due Process, Alex Dougherty Neumann

Duke Law Journal

To address undesirable conduct like infringing a copyright or placing a robocall, legislatures have created statutory causes of action that enable plaintiffs to file private suits. Instead of needing to prove actual damages from a defendant's conduct, many statutory causes of action allow a plaintiff to pursue a predefined damages amount per statutory violation. The damages are known as statutory damages, and their elegance lies in how they scale linearly, or one-to-one, with every violation by a defendant. But in the digital age, where automated technologies can generate millions of violations without human oversight, courts are now confronting monstrous aggregate …

The Second Amendment's Catholic Problem, Jared Danaher Oct 2025

The Second Amendment's Catholic Problem, Jared Danaher

Duke Law Journal

After New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, history is the touchstone of Second Amendment analysis. Thus, this Note explores an understudied part of America's long and complicated history with weapons: Catholic disarmament. By undertaking a detailed historical analysis of three Catholic disarmament measures in the late colonial United States, this Note attempts to determine what the history means for present day firearms law. It concludes that even though courts frequently cite America’s history of Catholic disarmament, they rarely use it in a historically accurate way. Modern courts use Catholic disarmament to justify weapons bans on people …

Authoritarian Transfers, Günter Frankenberg, Fernanda G. Nicola Oct 2025

Authoritarian Transfers, Günter Frankenberg, Fernanda G. Nicola

University of Miami Law Review

The rapid proliferation of foreign agent laws globally has become a hallmark of rising authoritarianism, with these laws weaponized to suppress dissent and stifle civil society. While the post-World War II study of legal transplants focused on liberal legal orders, the rise of authoritarian regimes has introduced a new dimension: the transnational movement and adaptation of authoritarian legal frameworks, or authoritarian transfers. This Article fills a critical gap by developing an analytical framework to distinguish authoritarian transfers from democratic ones, using transfer theory, a central theme in comparative law that explores how laws travel, adapt, and transform within new social …

Forfeiture Takings, Police Power, And Necessity Destruction, Shelley Ross Saxer Oct 2025

Forfeiture Takings, Police Power, And Necessity Destruction, Shelley Ross Saxer

University of Miami Law Review

Civil forfeiture laws allow law enforcement to seize property when there is probable cause it has been used or possessed in violation of legal rules, often before an owner has a chance to contest the government’s seizure in court. In the criminal context, forfeiture is typically an in personam action that requires a criminal conviction and is part of a defendant’s sentence. In the civil context, however, forfeiture is an in rem proceeding brought against the property derived from or used to commit an offense––not against the person who committed the offense. As such, a civil forfeiture may not require …
