Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In This Reply We Briefly Clarify The Main Points Of Our Method To Construct Coherent-State Path Integrals In The Continuum And We Reply To The Critique Raised By In The Preceding Comment By Kochetov [Phys. Rev. A 99, 026101 (2019)10.1103/PhysRevA.99.026101]. By Using Definite Examples, We Prove That Our Approach Is Capable Of Resolving The Inconsistencies Accompanying The Standard Coherent-State Path-Integral Representation Of Interacting Systems.

Interannual climate variability patterns associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon result in climate and environmental anomaly conditions in specific regions worldwide that directly favor outbreaks and/or amplification of variety of diseases of public health concern including chikungunya, hantavirus, Rift Valley fever, cholera, plague, and Zika. We analyzed patterns of some disease outbreaks during the strong 2015–2016 El Niño event in relation to climate anomalies derived from satellite measurements. Disease outbreaks in multiple El Niño-connected regions worldwide (including Southeast Asia, Tanzania, western US, and Brazil) followed shifts in rainfall, temperature, and vegetation in which both drought and flooding occurred in …

Transfer, in which capability acquired in one situation influences performance in another is considered, along with retention, as demonstrative of effectual learning. In this regard, interlimb transfer of functional capacity has commanded particular attention as a means of gauging the generalisation of acquired capability. Both theoretical treatments and prior empirical studies suggest that the successful accomplishment of a physical training regime is required to bring about generalised changes that extend to the untrained limb. In the present study, we pose the following question: Does interlimb transfer occur if and only if the training movements are executed? We report findings from …

Gendering Islamophobia To Better Understand Immigration Laws, Catherine Dauvergne Feb 2019

Gendering Islamophobia To Better Understand Immigration Laws, Catherine Dauvergne

All Faculty Publications

This paper examines two recent developments in immigration law in Western liberal democracies: security exclusions and forced marriage provisions. It aims to consider how both of these settings are influenced by a pernicious Islamophobia and by gender. And, of course, by the intersection that creates a gendered version of Islamophobia. The overarching aim of the work is to consider whether and how human rights arguments are likely to be effective in immigration law. The work proceeds by developing the ideas of ‘unknowability’ and ‘unintelligibility’ as two ways to describe how Western law responds to Islam, and in so doing, contributes …

To Excuse Or Not To Excuse: Effect Of Explanation Type And Provision On Reactions To A Workplace Behavioral Transgression, Joseph Mroz Feb 2019

To Excuse Or Not To Excuse: Effect Of Explanation Type And Provision On Reactions To A Workplace Behavioral Transgression, Joseph Mroz

Psychology Faculty Publications

People often offer an excuse or an apology after they do something wrong. In this paper, we examine how giving an excuse, an apology, or no explanation after arriving late to a meeting influences the attitudes and behavioral intentions others form toward the late arrival. Additionally, we examined how a group-related factor (complaining) and the late arrival’s history with coming late affected participant judgments. Across two studies using complementary experimental and survey methods, we found that an excuse is better than no explanation, but that the difference between apology and no explanation and apology and excuse is not always clear. …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

The study investigated library services provision on academic performance of nursing undergraduates in selected universities in South West Nigeria. A proportionate random sampling technique used to select three hundred and four (304) nursing undergraduates in the three selected universities and the response rate was 82.24%. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire which was administered to the respondents. The data were analysed using simple percentage and frequency tables of SPSS. The finding shows that majority of the nursing undergraduates are frequent library users, they are aware of the availability of the library services provision and the services enabled …

Mechanical Properties Of The Intermetallic Compound Cafe2as2 At Small Length Scales, John Sypek

Doctoral Dissertations

Nanotechnology has paved the way for the research and development of new classes of materials and how we use them. With the desire to decrease the size of devices all while having advanced properties, research in this field and the development of small-scale experimental techniques has become significantly important. Materials can deform in elastically or plastically when an external load is applied. If elastically deforming a material, the material can then fully recover when unloading and there is no permanent damage to the shape or the structure of the material. When plastically deforming, this means that the materials shape cannot …

Persisting In The Negative: The Banishment, Exile, And Execution Of Gerard Udinck, 1657-1665, David Beeler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In January 1663 the former alderman of the Groningen tailors’ guild, Gerard Udinck, was sentenced to death for his role in orchestrating a series of riots in the city. On the day of his execution, however, Udinck received a pardon in the form of a lifelong banishment. Although initially relieved to be alive, Udinck’s experiences in exile would prove taxing in a variety of ways. He spent the next three years in northwestern Germany, first in Steinfurt and then in Neuenhaus, where he recorded his daily life in a diary. Many of these entries describe a life that was shaped …

Online Mmorpg Games In China: Player Motivations And The Mediating Role Of Flow, Jiaxin Liu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) are gaining popularity and are being used widely in China. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the motivation and the experience of MMORPG players, and the effects of playing MMORPG through an extensive online survey of more than 300 Chinese participants (n = 305). Specifically, the findings support the complex relationship between variables, including the direct effects on motivation and flow, on the time the players invest in MMORPG games, and the mediated effects on motivations through flow. In addition to the importance of direct and indirect effects on …

Climate Change In A Differential Equations Course: Using Bifurcation Diagrams To Explore Small Changes With Big Effects, Justin Dunmyre, Nicholas Fortune, Tianna Bogart, Chris Rasmussen, Karen Keene

CODEE Journal

The environmental phenomenon of climate change is of critical importance to today's science and global communities. Differential equations give a powerful lens onto this phenomenon, and so we should commit to discussing the mathematics of this environmental issue in differential equations courses. Doing so highlights the power of linking differential equations to environmental and social justice causes, and also brings important science to the forefront in the mathematics classroom. In this paper, we provide an extended problem, appropriate for a first course in differential equations, that uses bifurcation analysis to study climate change. Specifically, through studying hysteresis, this problem highlights …

Consensus Building By Committed Agents, William W. Hackborn, Tetiana Reznychenko, Yihang Zhang Feb 2019

Consensus Building By Committed Agents, William W. Hackborn, Tetiana Reznychenko, Yihang Zhang

CODEE Journal

One of the most striking features of our time is the polarization, nationally and globally, in politics and religion. How can a society achieve anything, let alone justice, when there are fundamental disagreements about what problems a society needs to address, about priorities among those problems, and no consensus on what constitutes justice itself? This paper explores a model for building social consensus in an ideologically divided community. Our model has three states: two of these represent ideological extremes while the third state designates a moderate position that blends aspects of the two extremes. Each individual in the community is …

Modeling The Spread And Prevention Of Malaria In Central America, Michael Huber Feb 2019

Modeling The Spread And Prevention Of Malaria In Central America, Michael Huber

CODEE Journal

In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there were 216 million cases of Malaria reported in 91 countries around the world. The Central American country of Honduras has a high risk of malaria exposure, especially to United States soldiers deployed in the region. This article will discuss various aspects of the disease, its spread and its treatment and the development of models of some of these aspects with differential equations. Exercises are developed which involve, respectively, exponential growth, logistics growth, systems of first-order equations and Laplace transforms. Notes for instructors are included.

This article surveys how SIR models have been extended beyond investigations of biologically infectious diseases to other topics that contribute to social inequality and environmental concerns. We present models that have been used to study sustainable agriculture, drug and alcohol use, the spread of violent ideologies on the internet, criminal activity, and health issues such as bulimia and obesity.

The Mathematics Of Gossip, Jessica Deters, Izabel P. Aguiar, Jacquie Feuerborn Feb 2019

The Mathematics Of Gossip, Jessica Deters, Izabel P. Aguiar, Jacquie Feuerborn

CODEE Journal

How does a lie spread through a community? The purpose of this paper is two-fold: to provide an educational tool for teaching Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) and sensitivity analysis through a culturally relevant topic (fake news), and to examine the social justice implications of misinformation. Under the assumption that people are susceptible to, can be infected with, and recover from a lie, we model the spread of false information with the classic Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model. We develop a system of ODEs with lie-dependent parameter values to examine the pervasiveness of a lie through a community.

The model presents the opportunity …

Language, Technology, And Engagement In The Haitian Classroom: An Interim Report On The Mit-Haiti Initiative, Haynes Miller

CODEE Journal

Since 2013 I have been traveling to Haiti as part of the "MIT- Haiti Initiative." This initiative, led by Professor Michel DeGraff of the MIT Department of Linguistics and Philosophy, aims to encourage active learning strategies, enabled by technology when possible and appropriate, and strongly stresses the importance of the use of the one language spoken by all Haitians, namely Haitian Creole (or Kreyòl). To use a Haitian metaphor, these three components form the three stones on which the cook-pot of our educational approach rests. We have focused our attention on the higher education sector.

In this note I …
