Smoking is associated with a lower health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, there is little information about the association between HRQOL in relation to race, income, and smoking status. The present study aimed to assess the association between HRQOL and smoking status for those of different races and income levels. This study applied a cross-sectional design using data from the 2017 patient survey of the Louisiana Tobacco Control Initiative. We obtained 1108 responses from patients at eight Louisiana public hospitals. The EuroQol (EQ-5D) US index score assessed HRQOL. Smoking status was classified into four groups: never smoked, former smoker, current …

This paper is a response to an earlier article in the Journal of Education Policy, which calls for ‘new ideas and constructive principles and practices for the provision of socially-just education’. We first discuss how an economistic approach to education entrenches socioeconomic disadvantage and argue that, in the light of evidence that inequalities are increasing both nationally and internationally, it has become increasingly important that we understand models of social justice in schools in deprived locations. Reporting on original longitudinal research with schools in disadvantaged coastal areas in England, and drawing on the notion of the insistent affirmation of possibility, …

Is The Incorporation Of The Newborn Examination In The Pre-Registration Curriculum Acceptable In Clinical Practice? A Qualitative Study., Rachel Stanyer, Heather Hopper
School of Nursing and Midwifery
The objectives of this qualitative study were to describe the experiences of currently practicing newborn examiner midwives who had accessed their training post registration; explore their views on the inclusion of newborn examination in the pre-registration curriculum and invite them to identify strategies to achieve practical implementation of the inclusion of the newborn examination in pre-registration in the practice setting. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using Thematic Analysis with an inductive approach. Three main themes were identified; experiences of the role, views of the newborn examination being incorporated into the pre-registration midwifery curriculum and practical considerations. The …

Developing Effective Social Media Messages: Insights From An Exploratory Study Of Industry Experts, Phil Megicks, Sarhang Majid, Carmen Lopez, Wai Mun Lim
Plymouth Business School
As consumers are increasingly utilizing the social network and media platforms for prepurchase information, managers are confronted with producing effective social media messages that can favorably influence buyers’ attitudes and behavioral intentions towards brands. A qualitative, in‐depth, elite interview investigation with social media marketing experts was undertaken to develop awareness of the factors influencing the effectiveness of social media marketing. Adopting a thematic analysis approach, this study establishes the three overriding themes of interactivity, credibility, and infotainment as being valuable in determining how social media marketing can enhance brand performance. Attitude theory and the hierarchy‐of‐effects model is utilized to support …

Developable Mechanisms On Developable Surfaces, Todd G. Nelson, Trent K. Zimmerman, Robert J. Lang, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell

The trend toward smaller mechanism footprints and volumes, while maintaining the ability to perform complex tasks, presents the opportunity for exploration of hypercompact mechanical systems integrated with curved surfaces. Developable surfaces are shapes that a flat sheet can take without tearing or stretching, and they represent a wide range of manufactured surfaces. This work introduces “developable mechanisms” as devices that emerge from or conform to developable surfaces. They are made possible by aligning hinge axes with developable surface ruling lines to enable mobility. Because rigid-link motion depends on the relative orientation of hinge axes and not link geometry, links can …

Positivity, Rational Schur Functions, Blaschke Factors, And Other Related Results In The Grassmann Algebra, Daniel Alpay, Ismael L. Paiva, Daniele C. Struppa
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We begin a study of Schur analysis in the setting of the Grassmann algebra when the latter is completed with respect to the 1-norm. We focus on the rational case. We start with a theorem on invertibility in the completed algebra, and define a notion of positivity in this setting. We present a series of applications pertaining to Schur analysis, including a counterpart of the Schur algorithm, extension of matrices and rational functions. Other topics considered include Wiener algebra, reproducing kernels Banach modules, and Blaschke factors.

Mathematical Modeling Of Lung Cancer Screening Studies, Deborah L. Goldwasser
Mathematics Colloquium Series
Lung cancer has the second highest cancer incidence, second only to prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. Furthermore, more cancer deaths are attributable to lung cancer than any other cancer for both genders. There is a high public health need for effective secondary prevention in the form of early detection and early treatment, complementary to smoking cessation efforts. The U.S. National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) demonstrated that non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) mortality can be reduced by 20% through a program of annual CT screening in high-risk individuals. However, CT screening regimens and adherence vary, potentially impacting …

Rhetoric At The University Of Chicago, James Beasley
Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity
From the early 1940's through the 1960's, some of the most important articles in rhetoric and composition were written by University of Chicago faculty, and it was these articles that became the touchstones of rhetorical education in the institutional return to rhetoric in the latter half of the twentieth century. By organizing these articles according to their institutional context, my book, Rhetoric at the University of Chicago, sheds new light on the beginnings of rhetoric and composition and demonstrates the significance of historical context in avoiding the misuse of these articles as foundationalist rhetorical theory.

Neoliberal Urbanism As ‘Strategic Coupling’ To Global Chains: Port Infrastructure And The Role Of Economic Impact Studies, David Jaffee
Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity
Abstract This paper identifies and delineates a variant of neoliberal urbanism that grounds city-region economic development on the ability to gain financial and public support for large-scale infrastructure projects advancing particular forms of capital accumulation. More specifically, the focus is on the effort of city-regions to strategically exploit and expand geographic and physical assets to capture economic benefits associated with global value chains through the expansion of maritime ports. This development strategy requires sizable public investments in port infrastructure. In order to justify and convince the public and political officials of the wisdom of such investments, port officials commission economic …

“The Current Crisis Of Us Neoliberal Capitalism And Prospects For A New ‘Social Structure Of Accumulation’.”, David Jaffee
Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity
Wage squeeze/profit squeeze crisis theories provide a powerful framework for the historical analysis of US capitalist crises and the alternating demand-side and supply-side social structures of accumulation (SSA). However, the current neoliberal SSA would seem to defy the logic of this model in its persistence in the face of a deep financial crisis and a failure to realize its espoused objectives. This paper reviews this theoretical model of economic crises, its relationship to and viability alongside the rise and establishment of neoliberalism, and some of the political and economic obstacles that would seem to prevent the construction of a new …
Disarticulation And The Crisis Of Neoliberalism In The United States, David Jaffee
Disarticulation And The Crisis Of Neoliberalism In The United States, David Jaffee
Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity
Neoliberal policies instituted since the 1980s have transformed the United States economy in ways that have produced serious structural distortions in the basic operation of capitalism. Using Samir Amin’s concept of disarticulation, previously applied exclusively to the periphery of the world economy, this article argues that the twin and mutually reinforcing features of neoliberalism – global corporate restructuring and financialization – have now generated disarticulation in the core nations. This disarticulated structure is responsible for the economic stagnation and sharply unequal income/wealth distributional outcomes that characterize contemporary U.S. capitalism.
