Determining Success Of Dda And Eba With Assessment, Liz Bober, Stephanie Church Feb 2019

Determining Success Of Dda And Eba With Assessment, Liz Bober, Stephanie Church

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship

Collection development is challenging for academic libraries due to the rising cost of e-resources. Over the past five years, the Case Western Reserve University Library has been experimenting with new ways to actively address these issues through specific strategic initiatives. We have been successful in reallocating one-time funds to user-driven purchasing initiatives, such as demand-driven and evidence based acquisitions models. Our usage data proves these models are cost-effective and aid in the research process by offering a wealth of content at the user's point of need. This initiative has demonstrated that small changes can make a big impact and show …

Trends In Pennsylvania 8th And 11th Grade Student Test Performance Since The Common Core Implementation, Lisa S. Hoban

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

The purpose of this research study was to explore trends in student test performance since the Common Core implementation in 8th and 11th grades in Pennsylvania. After receiving failing grades for the Pennsylvania State Standards when compared with other states, legislators adopted the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards in 2013. Much of this decision was grounded in the belief that with new standards, Pennsylvania student test scores would move from 35-45% proficiency levels in Reading and Math to 100% proficiency (Hamilton, 2007).

Research questions focused on the trends in students’ scores over time as reported by the PSSA …

When Victims Refuse And Prosecutors Decline: Examining Exceptional Clearance In Sexual Assault Cases, Tara N. Richards, Marie Skubak Tillyer, Emily M. Wright Feb 2019

When Victims Refuse And Prosecutors Decline: Examining Exceptional Clearance In Sexual Assault Cases, Tara N. Richards, Marie Skubak Tillyer, Emily M. Wright

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study examines the predictors of sexual assault case clearance, with a focus on arrest and two types of exceptional clearance: victim refusal to cooperate and prosecutorial declination to prosecute. Using National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data on crime incidents that contain a sexual offense (N = 21,977), we estimated a multinomial regression model to examine the predictors of different clearance types for cases of sexual assault. Results indicated that the likelihood of victim refusal decreases in cases perpetrated by strangers, involving victim injury, occurring in public, and involving multiple offenses. A similar pattern of findings was observed …

A Model Of The Transmission Of Cholera In A Population With Contaminated Water, Therese Shelton, Emma Kathryn Groves, Sherry Adrian Feb 2019

A Model Of The Transmission Of Cholera In A Population With Contaminated Water, Therese Shelton, Emma Kathryn Groves, Sherry Adrian

CODEE Journal

Cholera is an infectious disease that is a major concern in countries with inadequate access to clean water and proper sanitation. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "cholera is a disease of inequity--an ancient illness that today sickens and kills only the poorest and most vulnerable people\dots The map of cholera is essentially the same as a map of poverty." We implement a published model (Fung, "Cholera Transmission Dynamic Models for Public Health Practitioners," Emerging Themes in Epidemiology, 2014) of a SIR model that includes a bacterial reservoir. Bacterial concentration in the water is modeled by the Monod …

An Epidemiological Math Model Approach To A Political System With Three Parties, Selenne Bañuelos, Ty Danet, Cynthia Flores, Angel Ramos Feb 2019

An Epidemiological Math Model Approach To A Political System With Three Parties, Selenne Bañuelos, Ty Danet, Cynthia Flores, Angel Ramos

CODEE Journal

The United States has proven to be and remains a dual political party system. Each party is associated to its own ideologies, yet work by Baldassarri and Goldberg in Neither Ideologues Nor Agnostics show that many Americans have positions on economic and social issues that don't fall into one of the two mainstream party platforms. Our interest lies in studying how recruitment from one party into another impacts an election. In particular, there was a growing third party presence in the 2000 and 2016 elections. Motivated by previous work, an epidemiological approach is taken to treat the spread of ideologies …

Preservice Teachers Making Sense Of Fraction Concepts And Operations In A Mathematics Education Content Course, Deksiyos Demissie Desta Feb 2019

Preservice Teachers Making Sense Of Fraction Concepts And Operations In A Mathematics Education Content Course, Deksiyos Demissie Desta

Theses and Dissertations

Twenty-five first-year preservice teachers attending a university in the Midwest of the United States of America participated in a whole-class-setting study aimed at investigating their knowledge of how they made sense of fraction concepts and operations, and how the development of this knowledge was facilitated during a mathematics education content course. Classroom mathematical practices of the content course that became “taken-as-shared” overtime were documented using the three-phase data analysis framework of Stephan and Rasmussen (2002, 2008). In the first phase of the analysis, whole-class discussion of fraction concepts and operations were transcribed and noted each time preservice teachers drew conclusions. …

Induction Of Met Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Down-Regulation Through Antibody-Mediated Receptor Clustering, Wenjing Li, Adam Dick, Fei Lu, Hong Sun Feb 2019

Induction Of Met Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Down-Regulation Through Antibody-Mediated Receptor Clustering, Wenjing Li, Adam Dick, Fei Lu, Hong Sun

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

The proto-oncoprotein MET is a receptor tyrosine kinase that plays a key role in cancer cell growth and invasion. We have used fluorescence-tagged antibodies to activate MET in live serum-starved glioblastoma cells and monitor the fate of antibody-bound MET receptor in single cell-based assays. We found that the antibodies induced rapid and transient formation of highly polarized MET clusters on the plasma membrane and promoted the activation of MET, resembling the initial effects of binding to its ligand, HGF. However, the antibody-induced clustering and activation of MET led to the rapid removal of the receptor from cell surface and altered …

Negotiating Cash Rent: What It Takes To Negotiate Like A Pro, Austin Duerfeldt Feb 2019

Negotiating Cash Rent: What It Takes To Negotiate Like A Pro, Austin Duerfeldt

Cornhusker Economics

The number one question I receive is about cash rent prices. Many landlords and tenants are working to find an equitable arrangement before February 28, 2019. Given the constraints on both sides, real estate taxes and the farm economy finding that arrangement is difficult. Becoming creative in how you analyze and value different cash rent options is necessary. Before sitting down face to face, here are some suggestions and preparations I recommend that can help maximize success.

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Interannual climate variability patterns associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon result in climate and environmental anomaly conditions in specific regions worldwide that directly favor outbreaks and/or amplification of variety of diseases of public health concern including chikungunya, hantavirus, Rift Valley fever, cholera, plague, and Zika. We analyzed patterns of some disease outbreaks during the strong 2015–2016 El Niño event in relation to climate anomalies derived from satellite measurements. Disease outbreaks in multiple El Niño-connected regions worldwide (including Southeast Asia, Tanzania, western US, and Brazil) followed shifts in rainfall, temperature, and vegetation in which both drought and flooding occurred in …
