Background: Accurate measurement of CD4 cell counts remains an important tenet of clinical care for people living with HIV. We assessed an instrument-free point-of-care CD4 test (VISITECT® CD4) based on a lateral flow principle, which gives visual results after 40 min. The test involves five steps and categorises CD4 counts as above or below 350 cells/μL. As one component of a performance evaluation of the test, this qualitative study explored the views of healthcare workers in a large women and children’s hospital on the acceptability and feasibility of the test.

Methods: Perspectives on the VISITECT® CD4 test were elicited through …

Activity Theory As Theoretical Framework For Analyzing And Designing Global K-12 Collaborations In Engineering: A Case Study Of A Thai-U.S. Elementary Engineering Project, Rebecca Hite, Christopher J. Thompson

Journal of International Engineering Education

The American engineering pipeline requires future workers to possess a unique skill set, comprised of content knowledge and 21st century skills, to recruit highly skilled, globally competitive engineers. Generally, 21st century skills are defined as the ability to think critically, communicate, collaborate in teams, and creatively solve problems. These skills are pertinent in training future engineers provided engineering utilizes the application of scientific knowledge within an inherently collaborative modality (the engineering design process). One component of developing 21st century skills and engineering competencies is the need for students to broaden their global awareness. Hence, American K-12 teachers are actively seeking …

Dynamic Adjustment Of Hotword Detection Threshold, Tanmay Wadhwa, Neil Dhillon Feb 2019

Dynamic Adjustment Of Hotword Detection Threshold, Tanmay Wadhwa, Neil Dhillon

Defensive Publications Series

Many devices allow users to speak a hotword to activate the device, e.g., a virtual assistant application, which then responds to the user command. With user permission, incoming speech data is analyzed to determine whether a hotword was uttered. First, coarse hotword detection is performed. If coarse detection indicates that the hotword was spoken, fine hotword detection is performed to confirm that the hotword was spoken. Per techniques described herein, when fine hotword detection is unsuccessful, the threshold for fine hotword detection is reduced for a short time window. Such reduction improves the likelihood of recognition of the next utterance …

Leveraging App Relationships And Distribution Patterns To Identify Malicious Software, Florian Tramer, Mo Yu, Sai Deep Tetali

Defensive Publications Series

Software distributors, such as the operators of online software repositories or stores, scan and analyze the software they host to flag potentially harmful applications (PHAs). The scans are typically performed offline and are based solely on app-level features and do not take into account structural relationships between different apps and devices. This disclosure describes an app ecosystem-based approach to detect PHAs via analysis of contextual information, such as app install statistics and installation distribution patterns. Relevant contextual information about each app obtained user permission is leveraged to build a machine learning pipeline to flag PHAs for further review. The ecosystem-based …
