Perspectives On Innovation In The Fashion Industry, Saheli Goswami Feb 2019

Perspectives On Innovation In The Fashion Industry, Saheli Goswami

Seminar in Textiles and Clothing

No matter the industry, innovation focuses on turning a creative idea into a well-executed, valuable product. In just the past 100 years, the fashion industry has demonstrated that creativity is the heart of innovation. Simple innovations such as improving the fit of a garment, to complex ideas such as developments in sustainable dyeing practices have all aided in the development of the industry today. Two major focuses for the future of fashion are technology and sustainability. By thinking ahead of the present time, innovators can implement solutions to improve the future of fashion.

Ponte Las Pilas: Hidden Narratives And Latinidad At Macalester College, Luz M. Ramirez Cruz Feb 2019

Ponte Las Pilas: Hidden Narratives And Latinidad At Macalester College, Luz M. Ramirez Cruz

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Latinxs in higher education, while numerous, still lag behind all major racial groups in terms of graduation. Why is that? It is society’s hope that education will provide equal opportunity and a path out of poverty, but are schools really providing equal opportunities for attainment or are they simply reproducing inequalities in society? To what extent does this idea, if at all, exist even at liberal and multiculturally focused institutions like Macalester? I ask first generation Latinx alumni to recount their college experiences at Mac in order understand how their narratives compared to those promoted in college advertisements on the …

Spoken Stories, Spoken Word: An Insurgent Practice For Restorative Education, Madeline Schmitt Feb 2019

Spoken Stories, Spoken Word: An Insurgent Practice For Restorative Education, Madeline Schmitt

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

This paper uses the terminology of whiteness, settler colonialism, culturally responsive pedagogy, and restorative education to interrogate the usage of spoken word in schools. I argue that spoken word can function as a form of resistance to white colonialist practices and as an advocate of emotional learning and critical education. This paper focuses on representation, student empowerment, and identity exploration in the context of education institutions. It crosses borders between education and authenticity, between classrooms and real life, and between teachers and students. I aim to ground this essay in the American Studies discipline as it discusses systems of power …

Dying The Good Death: Cultural Competence And Variance In Hospice Care, Lydia Koh-Krienke Feb 2019

Dying The Good Death: Cultural Competence And Variance In Hospice Care, Lydia Koh-Krienke

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

This paper examines the intersections between death and culture in the context of hospice care. The patient demographics of modern hospice care are overwhelmingly White; through an analysis of the formation of Korean-American culture and its distinct values, I conclude that hospice as we know it today primarily adheres to the Western conceptualization of a “good death”, and therefore is not accessible to those who belong to different cultures. In order to remedy this and to explain the racial disparities among hospice patients, I apply a model of cultural competency that specifically caters to Korean-American death traditions. While the effects …

Have No Fear! White Ladies Are Here!: Interrogating The Image And Institutionalization Of White Womanhood In The Classroom, Sophie Nadler Feb 2019

Have No Fear! White Ladies Are Here!: Interrogating The Image And Institutionalization Of White Womanhood In The Classroom, Sophie Nadler

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Using an interdisciplinary approach, this project examines how the American conception of white womanhood has informed and molded perceptions of what makes a “good” teacher. By examining historical and contemporary film-based discourses around white womanhood, it is clear that teaching has been transformed into another form of mothering, tying the teaching field to the white woman. This discursive connection is made seemingly permanent through the institutionalization of the white woman in the classroom. This paper will then begin to explore how this process has affected the larger educational system. Ultimately, this project hopes to encourage white women in education to …

Ice And The Unquestioned Human Cost Of Efficiency: A Moral Reckoning, Suzanna Jack Feb 2019

Ice And The Unquestioned Human Cost Of Efficiency: A Moral Reckoning, Suzanna Jack

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

This paper examines how the concept of economic efficiency is utilized by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through three frameworks, to excuse human rights violations in the name of a productive and efficient deportation process. The first framework used is a discussion of how economic efficiency is positively coded and used in everyday life and as a means for state control. Efficiency and state control inform my second and third analyses of how the combination of ICE with local police forces and unconventional means of detainment aligns with a capitalist mentality that perpetuates a free market profit …

Racial Representation And Miss Saigon: A Zero Sum Game?, Isabel P. S. Ryde Feb 2019

Racial Representation And Miss Saigon: A Zero Sum Game?, Isabel P. S. Ryde

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

People have been protesting and supporting the musical Miss Saigon since its premiere in 1989. The musical tale of a white American GI falling in love with a Vietnamese bargirl during the Vietnam War is praised for its diverse cast and showing the Vietnamese side of the war. Miss Saigon is also criticized for its stereotypical depiction of Asian women as prostitutes and Asian men as cold and treacherous. Both sides are passionate, and there is no clear consensus or majority opinion. What, then, is the value of Miss Saigon? Should it be banned or still performed? I analyze the …

Borders Manifest: Racializing The Nicaraguan Refugee In Costa Rica, Theodore B. Twidwell Feb 2019

Borders Manifest: Racializing The Nicaraguan Refugee In Costa Rica, Theodore B. Twidwell

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

I look to border responses of North American countries as refugees and migrants move across them to argue that border responses racialize the foreign other in receiving countries. I pay particular attention to the South-South migration of Nicaraguans into Costa Rica, of importance now due to the increased displacement of Nicaraguans across this border as the Nicaraguan government continues its harsh crackdown on political dissenters in the country. Through critical whiteness studies, the tactics used to racialize Nicaraguans as an other in Costa Rica are interrogated. By connecting these methods of racialization and border responses, I examine how racial and …

Subversive: Space As A Movement-Making Tool, Maddie Schumacher Feb 2019

Subversive: Space As A Movement-Making Tool, Maddie Schumacher

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

By exploring placemaking and indigenous memory, this paper argues that space can and should be utilized in movements against oppression. Grassroots resistance is increasingly necessary as the globally marginalized face the constant threats of colonization, incarceration, and fascism. With a grounding in memory studies and a transnational perspective, I analyze Maori movements in Aotearoa New Zealand and American Indian movements in North America in tandem with each other. Charting the histories of dominant space production in these twin contexts allow for a witnessing of each harmful nation-building project. This informed my conclusion that both global solidarities and place-based movements are …

Thriving, Not Surviving, Corinne Werner Feb 2019

Thriving, Not Surviving, Corinne Werner

First-Generation Symposium

Struggle, hardship, turmoil. These are a few words that come to mind when thinking about barriers to success that first-generation college students face. How can we help turn these three adjectives into more positive predictors? This educational workshop focuses on evidenced-based practices for supporting first-gen students, specifically focusing on two effective programs for at-risk scholars. Together, we will investigate the workings of the University of California’s (UC) Student Academic Preparation and Educational Partnerships (SAPEP) program and Colorado State University’s (CSU) Key Communities (Key) program. SAPEP’s programs work holistically with educational institutions, community organizations, and the business sector to improve academic …

Battling Imposter Syndrome: You Persevered! Luck Has No Place Here, Julius Grayson, Lesley Mateo Feb 2019

Battling Imposter Syndrome: You Persevered! Luck Has No Place Here, Julius Grayson, Lesley Mateo

First-Generation Symposium

The pressure to succeed and set yourself apart from the rest may seem overwhelming! If you identify as an underrepresented minority (URM) in higher education, the pressure intensifies when you are unable to see yourself, relate and/or identify with your college instructors or campus. Research suggests that identifying as an URM and not having visible representation of yourself in the classroom or on campus can lead to something known as Impostor Phenomenon (IP) also known as Impostor Syndrome. IP is the belief that achievement and success occur not because of performance or ability but rather because of luck. IP negatively …

Coordinating Resources Efficiently To Bolster Success Among Underserved College Students, Amanda Ciavarella Feb 2019

Coordinating Resources Efficiently To Bolster Success Among Underserved College Students, Amanda Ciavarella

First-Generation Symposium

Based on a 5-year study at Montgomery County Community College (PA), during which academic support and mentorship programming was developed for student-athletes, four key pillars of support were identified as contributory to increases in completion rates, success rates and GPA among students from underserved populations (including, but not limited to, students who identify as being first generation, minority, LGBTQ, disabled, poverty-stricken, underprepared, non-traditional, international or displaced). Students participating in all four pillar programs performed 321% better than average; participation in three of the four programs resulted in a 96% better performance; and those participating in two or less of the …

First-Generation College Students And "Othering" In Undergraduate Engineering, Harriet Hartman, Stephanie Farrell, Ralph Dusseau, Kauser Jahan, Sarah Bauer, Tiago Forin, Beena Sukumaran, Stephanie Lezotte, Danilo Zeppilli, Theresa Bruckerhoff Feb 2019

First-Generation College Students And "Othering" In Undergraduate Engineering, Harriet Hartman, Stephanie Farrell, Ralph Dusseau, Kauser Jahan, Sarah Bauer, Tiago Forin, Beena Sukumaran, Stephanie Lezotte, Danilo Zeppilli, Theresa Bruckerhoff

First-Generation Symposium

We have baseline data collected from a sample of all Rowan engineering students in 2015-6, and have analyzed the differences between first-generation engineering students (FGES) and non-first-generation engineering students (Non-FGES) with respect to (a) their perceptions of “otherness” in a variety of situations in engineering at Rowan (FGES do not perceive themselves as “other” in most situations); (b) their background in engineering-related subjects and extra-curricular activities in high school (FGES background differs from Non-FGES); (c) their satisfaction with various aspects of the engineering program at Rowan (there are few differences); (d) their self-confidence as engineers (there are some differences); and …

Educating The Whole Family: Best Practices For Advising First-Generation Students, Michelle Applegate, Nicolas Latorre Feb 2019

Educating The Whole Family: Best Practices For Advising First-Generation Students, Michelle Applegate, Nicolas Latorre

First-Generation Symposium

Being a first-generation student can feel like a very solitary experience. This secluded feeling can be exasperated if the student’s network of support does not feel supportive to them. In many instances family and friends, whom a first generation student may rely on for support, may actually be causing additional stress due to their own unfamiliarity with the college experience. We as advisors must create an environment that incorporates education for the whole family in order for the student to gain the autonomy needed to pursue their passions and be successful. This discussion-based session will incorporate real world examples and …

Stable Auto Focus Re-Triggering With Hand Shake Motion Compensation, Ruiduo Yang Feb 2019

Stable Auto Focus Re-Triggering With Hand Shake Motion Compensation, Ruiduo Yang

Defensive Publications Series

Automatic focusing by a camera involves actively scanning possible lens positions and choosing one that provides the sharpest image. Triggering too frequently can result in image frames captured during the process leading to an out-of-focus image. On the other hand, triggering less often can also lead to an out-of-focus image due to changes in the scene being captured that occur after automatic focus was locked. Scene changes due to hand shaking or camera motion are typically not taken into account by the automatic focusing process. As a result, any such changes that occur after locking focus can result in an …

Parallelizing Tests With Pessimistic Speculative Execution, Tavis Ormandy Feb 2019

Parallelizing Tests With Pessimistic Speculative Execution, Tavis Ormandy

Defensive Publications Series

Fuzzy testing or fuzzing is a technique for finding software vulnerabilities. Fuzzing works by feeding quasi-random, auto-generated input sequences to a target program and searching for failures. Fuzzers find inputs that trigger bugs; however, understanding those bugs is easier when extraneous data is removed to the extent possible. Extraneous data is removed by bisection, which is typically a serial procedure, e.g., doesn’t advance without knowing the result of the previous step. This makes test case optimization slow, sometimes taking hours to complete while CPU cores sit idle.

This disclosure describes techniques that parallelize the bisection procedure, e.g., by speculatively executing …
