The Legacy Of Natural Species And Substantial Form For Thomistic Evolution, James R. Hofmann Feb 2019

The Legacy Of Natural Species And Substantial Form For Thomistic Evolution, James R. Hofmann

Forum Lectures

Exploration of theistic evolution within a Thomistic framework has taken on the label of Thomistic evolution. Although the conceptual boundaries of this approach are not precise, a historical trajectory of its scholastic methodology can be traced back to the views of Aquinas himself. An enduring central concept in this tradition has been the idea of substantial form. For Aquinas, distinct substantial forms were associated with the kinds of animals and plants that have no prior ancestry and are ascribed to God's production during the Genesis days of adornment. Later in the tradition, the early twentieth century Jesuit Erich Wasmann referred …

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Energy harvesting devices that prosper in harsh environments are highly demanded in a wide range of applications ranging from wearable and biomedical devices to self-powered and intelligent systems. Particularly, over the past several years, the innovation of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) that efficiently convert ambient kinetic energy of water droplets or wave power to electricity has received growing attention. One of the main bottlenecks for the practical implications of such devices originates from the fast degradation of the physiochemical properties of interfacial materials under harsh environments. To overcome these challenges, here we report the design of a novel slippery lubricant-impregnated porous …

Advances In Geometric Techniques For Analyzing Blebbing In Chemotaxing Dictyostelium Cells, Zully Santiago, John Loustau, David Meretzky, Devarshi Rawal, Derrick Brazill Feb 2019

Advances In Geometric Techniques For Analyzing Blebbing In Chemotaxing Dictyostelium Cells, Zully Santiago, John Loustau, David Meretzky, Devarshi Rawal, Derrick Brazill

Publications and Research

We present a technical platform that allows us to monitor and measure cortex and membrane dynamics during bleb-based chemotaxis. Using D. discoideum cells expressing LifeAct-GFP and crawling under agarose containing RITC-dextran, we were able to simultaneously visualize the actin cortex and the cell membrane throughout bleb formation. Using these images, we then applied edge detect to generate points on the cell boundary with coordinates in a coordinate plane. Then we fitted these points to a curve with known x and y coordinate functions. The result was to parameterize the cell outline. With the parameterization, we demonstrate how to compute data …

Geographic And Socio-Economic Variation In Markers Of Indoor Air Pollution In Nepal: Evidence From Nationally-Representative Data, Saruna Ghimire, Shiva Raj Mishra, Abhishek Sharma, Adugna Siweya, Nipun Shrestha, Bipin Adhikar

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Background In low-income countries such as Nepal, indoor air pollution (IAP), generated by the indoor burning of biomass fuels, is the top-fourth risk factor driving overall morbidity and mortality. We present the first assessment of geographic and socio-economic determinants of the markers of IAP (specifically fuel types, cooking practices, and indoor smoking) in a nationally-representative sample of Nepalese households. Methods Household level data on 11,040 households, obtained from the 2016 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, were analyzed. Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the use of fuel types, indoor cooking practices, indoor smoking and IAP with respect to …

The Next Two Years Of Federal Housing Policy Could Be Positive Under Mark Calabria, David J. Reiss Feb 2019

The Next Two Years Of Federal Housing Policy Could Be Positive Under Mark Calabria, David J. Reiss

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The Trump administration is clearly working to put fair housing, fair lending, community reinvestment and consumer protection in deep freeze for the foreseeable future. So, from the perspective of an affordable housing advocate, there is a lot to oppose in the Trump agenda. But a move to redistribute credit risk in the mortgage market from the government to the private sector is not one of them, so long as housing proponents are able to protect programs that promote affordable housing and sustainable homeownership.
