Silver Diamine Fluoride Versus Sodium Fluoride For Arresting Dentine Caries In Children: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Alice Trieu, Ahmed Mohamed, Edward Lynch
Dental Medicine Faculty Research
Dental caries can compromise quality of life and is associated with demineralization of tooth structure by organic acids produced by microorganisms. This study systematically reviewed the dentine caries arrest capabilities of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and sodium fluoride (NaF). A comprehensive search strategy was developed to identify the relevant publications in electronic databases and hand searched journals and reviews (to March 2018). By applying strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, only six papers (two randomized controlled trials, two follow-up articles and two secondary statistical analysis studies) were considered for full text qualitative and quantitative assessment. The included studies were critically appraised …

Geographic And Socio-Economic Variation In Markers Of Indoor Air Pollution In Nepal: Evidence From A Nationally-Representative Data, Saruna Ghimire, Shiva Rah Mishra, Abhishek Sharma, Adugna Siweya, Nipun Shrestha, Bippin Adhikari
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Background: In low-income countries such as Nepal, indoor air pollution (IAP), generated by the indoor burning of biomass fuels, is the top-fourth risk factor driving overall morbidity and mortality. We present the first assessment of geographic and socio-economic determinants of the markers of IAP (specifically fuel types, cooking practices, and indoor smoking) in a nationally-representative sample of Nepalese households. Methods: Household level data on 11,040 households, obtained from the 2016 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, were analyzed.Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the use of fuel types, indoor cooking practices, indoor smoking and IAP with respect to socio-economic …

An Exploration Of Infant And Toddler Unstructured Outdoor Play, Danae Dinkel, Kailey Snyder, Tyler Patterson, Shane Warehime, Miriam E. Kuhn, Deborah Basler Wisneski
Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications
Unstructured outdoor play is important for children's development. The present study examined infants’ and toddlers’ physical and social unstructured outdoor play behaviors within childcare centers. Children's outdoor play behaviors were video recorded at two centers (A&B) and assessed using a modified version of the Observational System for Recording Physical Activity in Children in Preschool (OSRAC-P). Children in this study primarily took part in active play (56.7%) and engaged in play without any type of prompting from a teacher (91.2%). There was a significant interaction between the effect of center and location on physically active play (p < 0.001). Children at Center B were most active in open play areas (77.6%), while children at Center A were most active in gross motor play areas (72.2%). In sum, the outdoor play environment influences infants’ and toddlers’ physical and social play behaviors; however, more research is needed to determine the optimal environment for development.

Exposure to oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill may have lasting impacts on preservation of historic shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico. Submerged steel structures, including shipwrecks, serve as artificial reefs and become hotspots of biodiversity in the deep-sea. Marine biofilms on submerged structures support settlement of micro- and macrobiota and may enhance and protect against corrosion. Disruptions in the local environment, including oil spills, may impact the role that biofilms play in reef preservation. To determine how the Deepwater Horizon spill potentially impacted shipwreck biofilms and the functional roles of the biofilm microbiome, experiments containing carbon steels disks (CSDs) …

A Network Pharmacology Approach For The Identification Of Common Mechanisms Of Drug-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy, Guillermo De Anda Jauregui, Brett A. Mcgregor, Kai Guo, Junguk Hur
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
Drug-induced peripheral neuropathy is a side effect of a variety of therapeutic agents that can affect therapeutic adherence and lead to regimen modifications, impacting patient quality of life. The molecular mechanisms involved in the development of this condition have yet to be completely described in the literature. We used a computational network pharmacology ap-proach to explore the Connectivity Map, a large collection of transcriptional profiles from drug perturbation experiments to identify common genes affected by peripheral neuropathy-inducing drugs. Consensus profiles for 98 of these drugs were used to construct a drug–gene perturbation network. We identified 27 genes significantly associated with …

Schizaphis graminum Rondani (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Sipha flava Forbes (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are two common pests of bioenergy grasses. Despite the fact that they are both considered generalists, they differ in their ability to colonize Panicum virgatum cultivars. For example, S. flava colonizes both P. virgatum cv. Summer and P. virgatum cv. Kanlow whereas S. graminum can only colonize Summer. To study the molecular responses of these aphids to these two switchgrass cultivars, we generated de novo transcriptome assemblies and compared the expression profiles of aphids feeding on both cultivars to profiles associated with feeding on a highly susceptible sorghum host …
