Research By Gwu Senior Biology Major Establishes Process To Extract Anti-Cancer Compound, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Sulforaphane, a chemical compound found in broccoli, is known to have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. As an Undergraduate Research Scholar at Gardner-Webb University, Yuri Kurerov, of St. Petersburg, Russia, developed a method to separate and characterize the substance from broccoli seeds. One of 13 GWU students to receive a grant for focused research, Kurerov worked on his project during both 2018 summer terms.

Vertical Marine Snow Distribution In The Stratified Hypersaline, And Anoxic Orca Basin (Gulf Of Mexico), Arne Diercks, Kai Ziervogel, Ryan Sibert, Samantha B. Joye, Vernon Asper Feb 2019

Vertical Marine Snow Distribution In The Stratified Hypersaline, And Anoxic Orca Basin (Gulf Of Mexico), Arne Diercks, Kai Ziervogel, Ryan Sibert, Samantha B. Joye, Vernon Asper

Faculty Publications

We present a complete description of the depth distribution of marine snow in Orca Basin (Gulf of Mexico), from sea surface through the pycnocline to within 10 m of the seafloor. Orca Basin is an intriguing location for studying marine snow because of its unique geological and hydrographic setting: the deepest ~200 m of the basin are filled with anoxic hypersaline brine. A typical deep ocean profile of marine snow distribution was observed from the sea surface to the pycnocline, namely a surface maximum in total particle number and midwater minimum. However, instead of a nepheloid (particle-rich) layer positioned near …

Films of (FA0.79MA0.16Cs0.05)0.97Pb(I0.84Br0.16)2.97 were grown over TiO2, SnO2, indium tin oxide (ITO), and NiO. Film conductivity was interrogated by measuring the in-phase and out-of-phase forces acting between the film and a charged microcantilever. We followed the films’ conductivity versus time, frequency, light intensity, and temperature (233−312 K). Perovskite conductivity was high and light-independent over ITO and NiO. Over TiO2 and SnO2, the conductivity was low in the dark, increased with light intensity, and persisted for 10’s of seconds after the light …

The Evolution Of Consanguineous Marriages In The Archbishopric Of Granada, Spain (1900–1979), Juan F. Gamella, Ana MaríA NúÑEz-Negrillo Feb 2019

The Evolution Of Consanguineous Marriages In The Archbishopric Of Granada, Spain (1900–1979), Juan F. Gamella, Ana MaríA NúÑEz-Negrillo

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

In the twentieth century Spain maintained some of the highest rates of consanguineous marriage in Europe. In many regions these rates were still high in the 1950s and 1960s, but then decreased rapidly, and by the 1970s a generalized transformation in mating patterns was underway. In the following decades the marriage of persons closely related by birth became rare. Consanguinity and inbreeding have been much studied in Spain, but almost exclusively in the central and northern regions of the country. This is the first study of a whole large diocese in the southern region of Andalusia. This paper is based …

An Admixture Approach To Trihybrid Ancestry Variation In The Philippines With Implications For Forensic Anthropology, Bridget F. B. Algee-Hewitt, Cris E. Hughes, Matthew C. Go, Beatrix Dudzik

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

In this study, we investigate, for the first time from a forensic anthropological perspective, the question of mixed ancestry estimation for modern Filipinos with geographic origins in the Philippines. We derive estimates of continental ancestry using craniometrics from four sources: a new documented collection of current forensic significance from the Manila North Cemetery; the Howells cranial series representing a sample of unclaimed individuals from Manila but said largely to originate from more remote areas, with dates of death before 1940; the Hanihara sample aggregated from various locations and time periods across the Philippines; and the Hanihara series capturing various local …

Cimino, Jay H. Shubrook, Sonsoles De Lacalle, Yuchun Zhou, Vimla L. Patel

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine

BACKGROUND: Vast volumes of data, coded through hierarchical terminologies (e.g., International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision-Clinical Modification [ICD10-CM], Medical Subject Headings [MeSH]), are generated routinely in electronic health record systems and medical literature databases. Although graphic representations can help to augment human understanding of such data sets, a graph with hundreds or thousands of nodes challenges human comprehension. To improve comprehension, new tools are needed to extract the overviews of such data sets. We aim to develop a visual interactive analytic tool for filtering and summarizing large health data sets coded with hierarchical terminologies (VIADS) as an online, and publicly …

Discovery Of Selective Toxoplasma Gondii Dihydrofolate Reductase Inhibitors For The Treatment Of Toxoplasmosis, Allen T Hopper, Adam Brockman, Andy Wise, Julie Gould, Jennifer Barks, Joshua B Radke, L. David Sibley, Yongmao Zou, Stephen Thomas Feb 2019

Discovery Of Selective Toxoplasma Gondii Dihydrofolate Reductase Inhibitors For The Treatment Of Toxoplasmosis, Allen T Hopper, Adam Brockman, Andy Wise, Julie Gould, Jennifer Barks, Joshua B Radke, L. David Sibley, Yongmao Zou, Stephen Thomas

2010-2019 OA Pubs

A safer treatment for toxoplasmosis would be achieved by improving the selectivity and potency of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) inhibitors, such as pyrimethamine (1), for Toxoplasma gondii DHFR ( TgDHFR) relative to human DHFR ( hDHFR). We previously reported on the identification of meta-biphenyl analog 2, designed by in silico modeling of key differences in the binding pocket between TgDHFR and hDHFR. Compound 2 improves TgDHFR selectivity 6.6-fold and potency 16-fold relative to 1. Here, we report on the optimization and structure-activity relationships of this arylpiperazine series leading to the discovery of 5-(4-(3-(2-methoxypyrimidin-5-yl)phenyl)piperazin-1-yl)pyrimidine-2,4-diamine 3. Compound 3 has a TgDHFR IC
