Plaidoh: A Novel Method For Functional Prediction Of Long Non-Coding Rnas Identifies Cancer-Specific Lncrna Activities, Sarah C Pyfrom, Hong Luo, Jacqueline E Payton

Open Access Publications

BACKGROUND: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) exhibit remarkable cell-type specificity and disease association. LncRNA's functional versatility includes epigenetic modification, nuclear domain organization, transcriptional control, regulation of RNA splicing and translation, and modulation of protein activity. However, most lncRNAs remain uncharacterized due to a shortage of predictive tools available to guide functional experiments.

RESULTS: To address this gap for lymphoma-associated lncRNAs identified in our studies, we developed a new computational method, Predicting LncRNA Activity through Integrative Data-driven 'Omics and Heuristics (PLAIDOH), which has several unique features not found in other methods. PLAIDOH integrates transcriptome, subcellular localization, enhancer landscape, genome architecture, chromatin interaction, …

With or without another biological control agent, the specialist folivore Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata, the stem-galling fly Cecidochares connexa reduced the performance of the invasive alien plant, Chromolaena odorata in Ghana. There was a strong significant negative relationship between gall densities of the gall fly and stem height, and the number of stems and flower heads of C. odorata. Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata had very little impact on any C. odorata parameters. However, at sites where both C. connexa and P. pseudoinsulata occurred simultaneously, the performance of C. odorata was significantly reduced when compared with control plants. Increasing densities of both agents had a …

High-Pass Difference Features Based Image Quality Assessment, Wang Rui, Li Ping, Bin Sheng, Congbin Qiao, Lizhuang Ma, Enhua Wu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Current methods of image quality assessment only can assess the quality of images under the same type of image distortion. In order to fix such weaknesses, this paper is designed based on the image features of natural scene statistics and proposes a new metric method using high-pass filter for detecting features. The approach computes locally the normalized luminance; selects features such as the difference of RGB channels via high-pass filter, image gradient, sharpness, contrast, etc.; and analyzes and gathers features in the metric method trained by logistic regression. Experimental results show that the proposed method can work efficiently under …

Improved Dv-Hop Localization Scheme Based On The Best Path Matching Strategy, Qinqin Shi, Xu Qiang, Jianping Zhang Feb 2019

Improved Dv-Hop Localization Scheme Based On The Best Path Matching Strategy, Qinqin Shi, Xu Qiang, Jianping Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Improvement strategies are provided in view of the fact that the original DV-Hop (Distance, Vector-Hop) method has great error in distance estimation due to the network anisotropy in practical applications and the sensitivity of its location derivation algorithm to the range error. In the distance estimation step, a strategy of computing path similarity parameter is proposed to find out the most similar beacon-beacon path to beacon-node path; in the position calculation step, a modified PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm is added after the initial position of an unknown node being derived using Lateration algorithm. Simulation shows that compared with …

Research has found that intergenerational transmission of religiosity results in higher family functioning and improved family relationships. Yet the Pew Research Center found that 44% of Americans reported that they had left the religious affiliation of their childhood. And 78% of the expanding group of those who identify as religiously unaffiliated (“Nones”) reported that they were raised in “highly religious families.” We suggest that this may be, in part, associated with religious parents exercising excessive firmness with inadequate flexibility (rigidity). We used a multiphase, systematic, team-based process to code 8000+ pages of in-depth interviews from 198 Christian, Jewish, and Muslim …

Differing Effects Of Age And Starvation On Reproductive Performance In Drosophila Melanogaster, Er Churchill, C Dytham, Mdf Thom Feb 2019

Differing Effects Of Age And Starvation On Reproductive Performance In Drosophila Melanogaster, Er Churchill, C Dytham, Mdf Thom

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Successful reproduction requires the completion of many, often condition-dependent, stages, from mate searching and courtship through to sperm transfer, fertilisation and offspring production. Animals can plastically adjust their investment in each stage according to the physical and social environment, their own condition, their future reproductive potential, and the condition of their partner. Here we manipulate age and condition, through a nutritional challenge early or late in life, of both male and female Drosophila melanogaster and measure the effects on courtship, mating, and fitness when paired with a standardized (unmanipulated) partner. Older males were slower to start courting and mating, and …
