Coastal Embayment Rotation: Response To Extreme Events And Climate Control, Using Full Embayment Surveys, Mark Wiggins, Tim Scott, Gerd Masselink, Paul Russell, Robert Jak Mccarroll

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

© 2018 The Authors Barrier beach change in directionally bi-modal wave climates presents an increasing challenge for coastal communities, both in the short-term (storm events), and decadal to centurial time scales (long-term evolution). Predicting and planning for subsequent variations requires understanding of the morphological response to changes in wave energy, along with the atmospheric forces driving the wave climate. In this paper, multi-method topo-bathymetric surveys are used to assess the morphological change of a semi-sheltered gravel barrier (Start Bay, Devon, UK). Total sediment budgets (supra- to sub-tidal), with spatially-varying uncertainty levels, indicate the embayment is closed. One third of total …

Temporal Evolution And Pathway Models Of Poly(Ethylene-Terephthalate) Degradation Under Multi-Factor Accelerated Weathering Exposures, Cara L. Fagerholm, Roger H. French, Laura S. Bruckman

Faculty Scholarship

Photolytic and hydrolytic degradation of poly(ethylene-terephthalate) (PET) polymers with different stabilizers were performed under multiple accelerated weathering exposures and changes in the polymers were monitored by various evaluation techniques. Yellowing was caused by photolytic degradation and haze formation was induced by combined effects of photolytic and hydrolytic degradation. The formation of light absorbing chromophores and bleaching of the UV stabilizer additive were recorded through optical spectroscopy. Chain scission and crystallization were found to be common mechanisms under both photolytic and hydrolytic conditions, based on the infrared absorption of the carbonyl (C = O) band and the trans ethylene glycol unit, …

Novel Use Of Tranexamic Acid To Reduce The Need For Nasal Packing In Epistaxis (Nopac) Randomised Controlled Trial: Research Protocol., A Reuben, A Appelboam, A Barton, Pj Vickery, Et Al Feb 2019

Novel Use Of Tranexamic Acid To Reduce The Need For Nasal Packing In Epistaxis (Nopac) Randomised Controlled Trial: Research Protocol., A Reuben, A Appelboam, A Barton, Pj Vickery, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

INTRODUCTION: Patients presenting to emergency departments (EDs) with epistaxis uncontrolled by subsequent simple first aid measures or application of topical vasoconstrictors will typically undergo anterior nasal packing. Packing is effective, but can be extremely painful and unpleasant and patients usually need hospital admission. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a cheap, safe, readily available antifibrinolytic agent known to be beneficial in a variety of clinical settings where uncontrolled bleeding may be a problem. Anecdotal evidence suggests that topical TXA may be of value in persistent epistaxis; however, further evaluation is required. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a multicentre, double-blind, parallel group, randomised, …

Is There A Hidden Test Answer Key In The Aqedah? A Literary Structural Study., Arlyn S. Drew Feb 2019

Is There A Hidden Test Answer Key In The Aqedah? A Literary Structural Study., Arlyn S. Drew

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

The Aqedah (“Binding of Isaac”) or the Sacrifice of Isaac of Genesis 22:1–19 is framed as a divine test (v. 1). Scholars recognize the “structure matches exactly what a test is made up of.” Yet, paradox and tension mark Abraham’s trial. Why does God test Abraham by requiring the horrific sacrifice of Isaac then reverse himself? Since literary structure reveals the vision of the narrator, Jacques Doukhan’s chiastic structure (vv. 1–12) convincingly delineates the plot tension and dialogues. But verses 13–19 also correlate with parts of the chiasm and covenant revelations assuming the shape of a metaphorical key. If the …

Documentality And Dialogue, Terry Dwain Robertson Feb 2019

Documentality And Dialogue, Terry Dwain Robertson

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

The function of the library is to collect, preserve, and provide access to recorded human communication. “Documentality” is an umbrella term that embraces the complexity and scope of this enterprise. By definition, the artifacts of recorded human communication are technology dependent, language dependent, and socially constructed. These factors impact and constrain the message contained in the recordings. This poster highlights a few of the challenges and introduces a number of specializations that provide ways to overcome the difficulties. An application to the Dialogue between Science and Theology about Creation is discussed.

A Covenant Interpretive Hypothesis For The Sacrifice Of Isaac: Unbinding With The Test Answer Key, Arlyn S. Drew Feb 2019

A Covenant Interpretive Hypothesis For The Sacrifice Of Isaac: Unbinding With The Test Answer Key, Arlyn S. Drew

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

Abraham’s test of the sacrifice of Isaac in Genesis 22 hangs on God’s words. God’s last speech in the test functions as a divine interpretation of Abraham’s test actions (“because you have done this thing“ v. 16) for the covenant blessings (vv. 16-18) sequentially evoke all of Abraham’s seven covenant revelations except for the sixth (Abraham’s intercession in Gen 18). Since the covenant lessons are used as the divine norm for evaluating Abraham, one logical interpretative hypothesis for the test is a covenant-crisis challenge designed to elicit a comprehensive covenant response from the divinely trained Abraham. This covenant interpretation satisfies …

Techniques are described herein to equip backup power for some key nodes and form the local Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) rooted at the first hop node with backup power. Nodes have different preferred parents in different work states. In normal state, nodes behave like existing mesh networks and have no performance sacrifice. In Power Outage Notification (PON) state, nodes can unicast the PON messages to their PON state’s parents to improve PON message transmission efficiency and reliability.

Intelligent Regression Testing For Internet Of Things Wireless Device Using Mixed Machine Learning Methods, Lele Zhang, Mingyu Xie, Chuanwei Li, Xiang Fang

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are described herein for a mixed Machine Learning (ML) method which contains both the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm and Bayesian method. The regression test is very common for a Quality Assurance (QA) team in its daily work, but usually has too many cases for a very little-changed patch. The techniques described herein may pick up as few desired test cases as possible but still guarantee the same testing performance as before. This may improve the efficiency of the QA team, shorten its work time, and reduce the requirement for testing devices as well.

The Mystery Of Matter: "Unruly Elements", No Presenters

Science Seminars

2019 marks the International Year of the Periodic Table - 150 years since it was first developed. This week we will air a documentary depicting the early scientists who sought to bring order to the growing list of elements known in the 1800s. It is about one of the great adventures in the history of science: the long and continuing quest to understand what the world is made of, telling the story of some of history’s most important scientists as they seek to identify, understand and organize the basic building blocks of matter.
