Background: Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) noninvasively permits continuous, quantitative, bedside measurements of cerebral blood flow (CBF). To test whether optical monitoring (OM) can detect decrements in CBF producing cerebral hypoxia, we applied the OM technique continuously to probe brain-injured patients who also had invasive brain tissue oxygen (PbO 2 ) monitors. Methods: Comatose patients with a Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) < 8) were enrolled in an IRB-approved protocol after obtaining informed consent from the legally authorized representative. Patients underwent 6–8 h of daily monitoring. Brain PbO 2 was measured with a Clark electrode. Absolute CBF was monitored with DCS, calibrated by perfusion measurements based on intravenous indocyanine green bolus administration. Variation of optical CBF and mean arterial pressure (MAP) from baseline was measured during periods of brain hypoxia (defined as a drop in PbO 2 below 19 mmHg for more than 6 min from baseline (PbO 2 > 21 mmHg). In a secondary analysis, we compared optical CBF and MAP during randomly selected 12-min periods of “normal” (> 21 mmHg) and “low” (< 19 mmHg) PbO 2 . Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) and logistic regression analysis were employed to assess the utility of optical CBF, MAP, and the two-variable combination, for discrimination of brain hypoxia from normal brain oxygen tension. Results: Seven patients were enrolled and monitored for a total of 17 days. Baseline-normalized MAP and CBF significantly decreased during brain hypoxia events (p < 0.05). Through use of randomly selected, temporally sparse windows of low and high PbO 2 , we observed that both MAP and optical CBF discriminated between periods of brain hypoxia and normal brain oxygen tension (ROC AUC 0.761, 0.762, respectively). Further, combining these variables using logistic regression analysis markedly improved the ability to distinguish low- and high-PbO 2 epochs (AUC 0.876). Conclusions: The data suggest optical techniques may be able to provide continuous individualized CBF measurement to indicate occurrence of brain hypoxia and guide brain-directed therapy.

Multiwavelength Survey Of X-Ray Sources In The Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy, R. M. Arnason, P. Barmby, A. Bahramian, T. J. Maccarone, S. E. Zepf

Physics and Astronomy Publications

We present an unprecedented, deep study of the primordial low-mass X-ray binary population in an isolated, lower metallicity environment. We perform follow-up observations of previously identified X-ray binary candidates in the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy by combining a second Chandra observation with Spitzer and Gemini photometry, as well as Gemini spectroscopy of selected targets. Of the original nine bright X-ray sources identified, we are able to classify all but one as quasars, active galactic nuclei, or background galaxies. We further discover four new X-ray sources in the second-epoch Chandra observation. Three of these new sources are background sources and one is …

Freshwater lakes are home to bacterial communities with 1000s of interdependent species. Numerous high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequence surveys have provided insight into the microbial taxa found within these waters. Prior surveys of Lake Michigan waters have identified bacterial species common to freshwater lakes as well as species likely introduced from the urban environment. We cultured bacterial isolates from samples taken from the Chicago nearshore waters of Lake Michigan in an effort to look more closely at the genetic diversity of species found there within. The most abundant genus detected was Pseudomonas, whose presence in freshwaters is often attributed …

Count On Your Subordinates: Young Managers And Innovation Efficiency, Lei Gao, Christine X. Jiang, Mohamed Mekhaimer

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

We investigate the relationship between executives’ horizons and firms’ innovation efficiency. Motivated by Acharya, Myers, and Rajan’s (2011, JF) theory, we devise a measure of internal governance based on the difference in expected horizons between a CEO and her subordinates. Consistent with our conjecture, we find robust evidence that subordinate managers with longer horizon compared to the CEO can improve firm’s innovation efficiency. Internal governance has a stronger effect on innovation efficiency for firms with elder, generalist CEOs and when the number of subordinates on the board is higher. However, while the presence of powerful CEOs attenuates the effect, overconfident …

The interactions between the microbial reduction of Fe (III) oxides and sediment geochemistry are poorly understood and mostly unknown for the Louisiana deltaic plain. This study evaluates the potential of P mobilization for this region during bacterially mediated redox reactions. Samples were collected from two wetland habitats (forested wetland ridge, and marsh) characterized by variations in vegetation structure and elevation in the currently prograding Wax Lake Delta (WLD) and two habitats (wetland marsh, and benthic channel) in degrading Barataria Bay in Lake Cataouatche (BLC). Our results show that PO4 3− mobilization from WLD and BLC habitats were negligible under aerobic …

The Influence Of Periodic Shear On Structural Relaxation And Pore Redistribution In Binary Glasses, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The evolution of porous structure, potential energy and local density in binary glasses under oscillatory shear deformation is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The porous glasses were initially prepared via a rapid thermal quench from the liquid state across the glass transition and allowed to phase separate and solidify at constant volume, thus producing an extended porous network in an amorphous solid. We find that under periodic shear, the potential energy decreases over consecutive cycles due to gradual rearrangement of the glassy material, and the minimum of the potential energy after thousands of shear cycles is lower at larger strain …

Saints, Hagiographers, And Religious Experience: The Case Of Tukaram And Mahipati, John Llewellyn

College of Humanities and Public Affairs

One of the most important developments in Hinduism in the Common Era has been the rise of devotionalism or bhakti. Though theologians and others have contributed to this development, the primary motive force behind it has been poets, who have composed songs celebrating their love for God, and sometimes lamenting their distance from Her. From early in their history, bhakti traditions have praised not only the various gods, but also the devotional poets as well. And so hagiographies have been written about the lives of those exceptional devotees. It could be argued that we find the religious experience of these …

Younger Generations Are Infected By Continuous Socialization To Accept Diminished Privacy: A Global Analysis Of How The United States' Constitutional Doctrine Is A Main Contributor To Eroded Privacy, Tiffany Kim

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Since the nineteenth century, privacy concerns have increased with the growth of technology. The invention of instantaneous photography, coupled with the enlarged presence of press, was met with concerns of degraded privacy. Society has formed expectations of privacy, but as time passes, those expectations continue to diminish. Younger generations have been socialized to accept lessened levels of privacy in this digitalized world of mass data and connectivity.

Individual privacy expectations vary globally. The construction of China's government and culture produces a lesser expectation of individual privacy than that of the United States. As outlined in the U.S. Constitution, U.S. citizens …

Corporate Criminal Liability: Toward A Compliance-Orientated Approach, Gustavo A. Jimenez Feb 2019

Corporate Criminal Liability: Toward A Compliance-Orientated Approach, Gustavo A. Jimenez

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Under U.S. federal law, a corporation can be held criminally liable for the crimes of its employees and agents. The Department of Justice's U.S. Attorneys' Manual lays out a list of factors prosecutors can evaluate when deciding whether or not to prosecute a corporate entity. The Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutors have various tools at their disposal, including deferred prosecution agreements (DPAs) and non-prosecution agreements (NPAs) as alternatives to going to trial. Prosecutors have used DPAs and NPAs in recent cases, allowing the government to ensure that corporate entities comply with investigations, enact compliance programs, and continue to follow laws …

Draining The Flooded Markets: Tariffs, Suniva & Solar Energy Investment, Michael A. Stroup

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Demand for solar energy in the United States has increased significantly over the past half century. Despite the falling costs of solar infrastructure, the United States solar energy market is at a turning point. In 2017, two insolvent U.S. solar manufacturers, Suniva and SolarWorld America, successfully petitioned the International Trade Commission (ITC) to invoke Section 201 of the 1974 Trade Act. The two U.S. manufacturers argued that a surplus of imported Chinese solar panels has driven the cost of solar infrastructure too low and forced them out of the market. The ITC responded by recommending tariffs on global solar photovoltaic …

Robust Super-Resolution Approach To Source Localization In Ocean Waveguide Using Sparsity Constraint, Hai-Yan Song, Chang-Yi Yang, Ke-Jun Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Source localization in an ocean waveguide is a challenging problem because of the complexity of underwater acoustic propagation. Matched-field processing (MFP) has attracted considerable attention and has become a crucial technique for underwater acoustic source localization. Compressive sensing can achieve spatial sparsity, thus improving spatial resolution, by imposing penalties based on l1-norm. In this study, we developed a robust super-resolution approach for source localization in an ocean waveguide, which utilizes the inherent sparse structure of the spatial localization problem and underwater sound propagation principle. The proposed approach can be formulated as a sparse representation problem and further converted into a …

Optimal Design And Implementation Of Fractal Dipole Antenna Based On Arc Of Trigeminal Tree Structure, Xiaohong Zhang, Xiaoxiao Nan, Yixian Yang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A RFID fractal dipole antenna is designed with the arc of the trigeminal tree structure, which is fed by simple microstrip balun to achieve better impedance matching within employing double parallel line structure and by using the dielectric substrate withεr=4.4 and tan δ=0.035. The results of electromagnetic property simulation analysis of HFSS show that the return loss can reach 36dB, which is much higher than binary arc-shaped fractal antenna which is 16dB; and the impedance matching is very ideal. By physical processing and testing of the antenna, the measured results are in very good agreement with simulation …
