What Was So Attractive In Artemis/Diana Worship, And What Was The Rationale For Christians Not To Follow Pagan Ideology?, Georg Filippou
What Was So Attractive In Artemis/Diana Worship, And What Was The Rationale For Christians Not To Follow Pagan Ideology?, Georg Filippou
Seminary Scholarship Symposium
The last few decades of archaeological research in Ephesus have revealed new insights into the context of Paul’s writings. In the past many commentators have assumed that the Artemis cult was sex-saturated at the time of Paul, and therefore interpreted the biblical texts from that perspective. However, more recent scholarship has suggested the opposite. Mystery religions elevated the status of women. In the creation narrative of Artemis, the woman was born first. In refraining from everything that is part of a marriage, women could reach salvation. It is therefore not surprising that Paul addressed issues connected to women (creation, marriage, …
Ethical Implications Of The Academic Battle Between Evolutionists And Interventionists In The Search For Truth About Origins, Mihai Bijacu
Ethical Implications Of The Academic Battle Between Evolutionists And Interventionists In The Search For Truth About Origins, Mihai Bijacu
Seminary Scholarship Symposium
In the outgoing discussion over the very hot topic of the evolution - creation controversy, the two sides have often forgotten that the ultimate goal is to find out the truth about origins and not to defeat the opponent. This paper explores four types of misconducts when dealing with origins (ad hominem attacks, straw man arguments, misrepresenting challenges and passing opinions as facts) and suggests ways of dealing with them in order to foster a sound environment for arguments on both sides to be heard faithfully and to promote the search for truth.
The Weathering Hypothesis: Sociocultural And Biological Factors Of Postpartum Depression Among Black Women, Anna Van Beusekom
The Weathering Hypothesis: Sociocultural And Biological Factors Of Postpartum Depression Among Black Women, Anna Van Beusekom
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Black women experience higher rates of PPD than their White counterparts. To date, no one has linked experiences of racism and discrimination, the impacts racism and discrimination have on allostatic load, and the subsequent process of weathering to the elevated levels of PPD in Black women. However, the Weathering Hypothesis can be utilized to explain the higher rates of PPD seen in Black women via the interactions between sociocultural factors and biological factors.
A Woman Wielding Words: The Role Of The Woman-Poet And Woman-Prophet Fedelm In The Táin Bó Cúailnge, Laura Steblay
A Woman Wielding Words: The Role Of The Woman-Poet And Woman-Prophet Fedelm In The Táin Bó Cúailnge, Laura Steblay
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
The character Fedelm is the only woman described as a poet in the early Irish epic the Táin Bó Cúailnge, and her prophecy which tells of the boy-hero Cúchulainn commences the tale. This paper examines Fedelm’s presence in the tale as a prophetic force in her role as a woman-poet and woman-prophet, as a literary reflection of Cúchulainn’s mentor Scathach, and as a visual parallel to Cúchulainn himself. Ultimately, it is not only Fedelm’s prediction that establishes the legendary Cúchulainn’s place in the narrative, but her very presence as a character provides a literary embodiment of her prophecy.
Single Image Super-Resolution, Yujing Song
Single Image Super-Resolution, Yujing Song
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Super-Resolution (SR) of a single image is a classic problem in computer vision. The goal of image super-resolution is to produce a high-resolution image from a low-resolution image. This paper presents a popular model, super-resolution convolutional neural network (SRCNN), to solve this problem. This paper also examines an improvement to SRCNN using a methodology known as generative adversarial net- work (GAN) which is better at adding texture details to the high resolution output.
Fairy In The Faerie Queene: Making Elizabeth Irish, Sarah Severson
Fairy In The Faerie Queene: Making Elizabeth Irish, Sarah Severson
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Queen Elizabeth I defied the societal and political expectations of her time by remaining an unmarried, female monarch for the entirety of her rule. She was glorified by many, including Edmund Spenser, who dedicated his epic poem The Faerie Queene to her. Yet tensions surrounding Queen Elizabeth’s unmarried, powerful status infiltrate Spenser’s work through the repeated loss of female power, which seems in conflict with Spenser’s supposed idealization of his monarch. Curiously, various female figures in The Faerie Queene can be linked to Irish sovereignty goddesses, female figures who have power over Irish land and transfer this power to men …
Conclaves In The Modern Papacy: Factors That Influence The Elections Of Popes (1846-Present), Jair Peltier
Conclaves In The Modern Papacy: Factors That Influence The Elections Of Popes (1846-Present), Jair Peltier
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
This research paper seeks to identify and explain external and internal factors, including international conflict, ecclesiastical norms, and the actions, styles, and reputations of popes in their life times, in the elections of popes in the Roman Catholic Church from 1846 to 2013.
Using historical context is important in identifying the international, social, and political climate that the conclaves were held in. Analyzing the papacies of the individual popes is another important aspect of this research. One pontificate begins when another ends. It would therefore be unproductive to disregard the successes and shortcomings of the popes after their elections. The …
Smart Parking Systems Design And Integration Into Iot, Charles M. Menne
Smart Parking Systems Design And Integration Into Iot, Charles M. Menne
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
This paper looks at two smart parking reservation algorithms, and examines the ongoing efforts to connect smart systems of different domains in a city's infrastructure. The reservation algorithms are designed to improve the performance of smart parking systems. The first algorithm considers the distance between parking areas and the number of free parking spaces in determining a parking space. The second algorithm uses distance between parking areas and driver destination, parking price, and the number of unoccupied spaces for each parking area. Neither of these smart parking systems cover how they could fit into a larger scale smart system. As …
A Giant Problem In Book Five Of The Faerie Queene, Corinne Mccumber
A Giant Problem In Book Five Of The Faerie Queene, Corinne Mccumber
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
In Book Five of The Faerie Queene, Edmund Spenser has no qualms about killing giants, who appear at multiple points in the text. Spenser has his narrator explicitly call three foes giants: the Egalitarian “Gyant,” (V.ii.30.1), Geryoneo (V.xi.9.5), and Grantorto (V.xii.15.2). Other giants weave through the text, and all perish--though their deaths signal more than simple defeat in combat. Previous scholarly examinations have linked giants to classical and biblical usurpers of both God and the State. Yet giants are also, as I show, uniquely connected to Ireland. Because of this connection, I argue that the giants of Book Five are …
Bodies, Blood, And Manure: The Rhetoric Of Nutrient Cycling In Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene And A View Of The State Of Ireland, Bailey Kemp
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Although the term “ecology” did not exist when Edmund Spenser was writing, forms of ecological understanding were present during Spenser’s time. Therefore, the modern phrase “nutrient cycling” provides a useful vocabulary with which to discuss two of Spenser’s most prominent works: The Faerie Queene and A View of the State of Ireland. Throughout these texts, Spenser exhibits an awareness of the cyclical patterns that govern the natural world, especially regarding the rich Irish soil. While emphasizing the fertility of the Irish landscape serves to advance his colonial agenda, Spenser’s apparent ecological awareness also poses a paradox: the valuable soil …

International Environmental Agreements On Climate Change, Katie Crawford
International Environmental Agreements On Climate Change, Katie Crawford
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
This paper analyzes International Environmental Agreements (IEAs) as tools to fight the threat climate change poses on the environment and sustainable development. The paper reviews the literature that provides a theoretical foundation for the IEAs. Particularly, the issues such as the greenhouse gas emissions levels, investments in green technology, the duration of agreements, and the process of negotiation that goes behind these agreements are reviewed. Past agreements (such as the Kyoto Protocol, Copenhagen Accord, and Paris Agreement) are studied to determine their effectiveness and potential problematic aspects related to the contracts.
Russia's Use Of The Energy Weapon: How Russia Manipulates Ukraine, Georgia, And The Baltic States, Sierra Brown
Russia's Use Of The Energy Weapon: How Russia Manipulates Ukraine, Georgia, And The Baltic States, Sierra Brown
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Russia’s stranglehold on oil and gas as a resource, and use of energy as a weapon is a long standing humanitarian crisis as shown by the cut off of oil exports to former Soviet Republics, in efforts to gain political and economic dependence, resulting in, as one example shows, electricity and heat suspensions of innocent citizens homes. Other concerted efforts of Moscow include control over export routes, the attempt to reinstate the Soviet Union, and the intimidation of the Western World. The Soviet Union may have collapsed, but the drive for state control over resources, people, and land did not. …
Development And Regulation Of Two-State Patterned Activity In A Model Serotonin Motor Circuit, Bhavya Ravi
Development And Regulation Of Two-State Patterned Activity In A Model Serotonin Motor Circuit, Bhavya Ravi
Open Access Dissertations
Neuronal activity accompanies synapse formation and maintenance, but how early activity contributes to behavior development is poorly understood. Here, we used the Caenorhabditis elegans egg-laying motor circuit as a model to understand how coordinated circuit activity patterns emerge during development in relation to behavior. The C. elegans egg-laying circuit is a simple neural circuit which develops during the fourth larval stage and drives a two-state behavior in adult animals. The egg-laying circuit comprises two serotonergic Hermaphrodite Specific Neurons (HSNs) and six cholinergic Ventral C neurons which synapse onto vulval muscles that contract to release eggs from the uterus. During L4, …

Mitochondria are essential organelles in most eukaryotic cells because of their role in metabolism and the production of ATP by the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) pathway, as well as other key cellular processes. Metal cofactors, such as copper (Cu) and iron (Fe), are incorporated into OXPHOS protein complexes of yeast located within the inner membrane of the mitochondria. Misincorporation or modulation of these available metals in mitochondrial enzymes leads to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS are reactive molecules containing oxygen such as peroxides, superoxide, and hydroxyl radicals. Yeast are a good model for studying aging and the effect …

Trump, Trade, And Trabajo: Renegotiating Nafta's Labor Accord In A Fraught Political Climate, Lance A. Compa
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
Quitting the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and demanding renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)- along with its supplemental labor pact, the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC)-were among the first actions of the new U.S. Administration in 2017. NAFTA renegotiations concluded for the time being-in October 2018 with announcement of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to replace NAFTA.
Controversial proposals on the bargaining table contained important implications for employment, labor rights, and labor standards in North America. This paper reviews the status of negotiations, the risks of losing the first-ever international instrument linking trade and labor standards …

Context. Starspots are important manifestations of stellar magnetic activity. By studying their behaviour in young solar analogues, we can unravel the properties of their magnetic cycles. This gives crucial information of the underlying dynamo process. Comparisons with the solar cycle enable us to infer knowledge about how the solar dynamo has evolved during the Sun’s lifetime.
Aims. Here we study the correlation between photometric brightness variations, spottedness, and mean temperature in V889 Her, a young solar analogue. Our data covers 18 years of spectroscopic and 25 years of photometric observations.
Methods. We use Doppler imaging to derive …
