A Question Of Space: Surveying Student Usage Of Lgbtq Resources In The Lgbtq Student Center Library And The Campus Library, Anne Hays

Publications and Research

This article explores how self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) students use the library located within a culture center on campus serving LGBTQ students, compared to the ways those students use the main campus library. In particular, this study asks how LGBTQ students’ needs of library collections may differ based on where those collections are located. While much has been written about pluralism, diversity, and multiculturalism in the library, there have been strikingly few studies by librarians attempting to work with minority student cultural centers on campus. Through an in-depth survey, this study directly asks LGBTQ students …

Articles

The 2017 tax legislation brought sweeping changes to the rules for taxing individuals and business, the deductibility of state and local taxes, and the international tax regime. The complex legislation was drafted and passed through a rushed and secretive process intended to limit public comment on one of the most consequential pieces of domestic policy enacted in recent history. This Article is an effort to supply the analysis and deliberation that should have accompanied the bill’s consideration and passage, and describes key problem areas in the new legislation. Many of the new changes fundamentally undermine the integrity of the tax …

Stratification Of Protein Expression Across The Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Disease Axis To Inform An Early Detection Platform, Sarah Bumatay Feb 2019

Stratification Of Protein Expression Across The Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Disease Axis To Inform An Early Detection Platform, Sarah Bumatay

University Honors Theses

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an extremely deadly disease with a dismal long-term prognosis. Currently there is an 8% 5-year survival rate for PDAC patients, which is due in part to a lack of early detection methods (Siegal et al, 2017). Notably, the majority of patients present with late stage disease, when therapeutic treatment is not effective. Novel biomarkers that can facilitate early detection of PDAC are needed to catch cancer earlier when there are more treatment options. Our laboratory has identified an overlooked population of tumor cells in the peripheral blood of cancer patients across all stages of disease. …

Aesthetics, Ethics, And Lose-Lose Dilemmas In The Anthropocen, Adam Liska Feb 2019

Aesthetics, Ethics, And Lose-Lose Dilemmas In The Anthropocen, Adam Liska

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic climate change will cause violence to increase globally, and nonlinear increases in sea level could cause a major escalation in global conflict. After 2100, a 22-meter sea-level rise is estimated here to dislocate two billion people from coastal areas. These impending civilization-changing events require us to again reevaluate our prevalent aesthetic preferences for luxury that produce a significant fraction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Due to industrial inertia, a central dilemma discussed here is the contradictions between the goals and impacts of aesthetics and ethics. Either we lose our own well-being (a loss of high-emission aesthetics) for the benefit …

A Unique Presentation Of A Large, Seven-Segment, Spinal Epidural Abscess In A Patient With A Pleural Empyema, Kyle Barner, Kyle M. Yuquimpo, David A. Mcmillan, Evan M. Shaw Feb 2019

A Unique Presentation Of A Large, Seven-Segment, Spinal Epidural Abscess In A Patient With A Pleural Empyema, Kyle Barner, Kyle M. Yuquimpo, David A. Mcmillan, Evan M. Shaw

Student Publications

Spinal epidural abscesses are insidious infections spread via hematologic, contiguous, or iatrogenic routes. On average, spinal epidural abscesses span two to four vertebral segments and are most commonly localized to the thoracic region. Fever, back pain, and neurological deficits are the most common clinical manifestations. However, the triad of these findings are not always detected. Patients may present with subtle symptoms leading to misdiagnosis and poor prognosis. We present a case of a large, anteriorly located, spinal epidural abscess in a patient originally admitted for dyspnea and confusion.

Identification Of Critical Source Areas (Csas) And Evaluation Of Best Management Practices (Bmps) In Controlling Eutrophication In The Dez River Basin, Hadi Babaei, Mohammad Nazari-Sharabian, Moses Karakouzian, Sajjad Ahmad Feb 2019

Identification Of Critical Source Areas (Csas) And Evaluation Of Best Management Practices (Bmps) In Controlling Eutrophication In The Dez River Basin, Hadi Babaei, Mohammad Nazari-Sharabian, Moses Karakouzian, Sajjad Ahmad

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Best Management Practices (BMPs) are commonly used to control pollution in the river basins. Prioritization of BMPs helps improve the efficiency and effectiveness of pollution reduction, especially in Critical Source Areas (CSAs) that produce the highest pollution loads. Recently, the Dez River in Khuzestan, Iran, has become highly eutrophic from the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides. In this basin, dry and irrigated farming produce 77.34% and 6.3% of the Total Nitrogen (TN) load, and 83.56% and 4.3% of the Total Phosphorus (TP) load, respectively. In addition, residential, pasture, and forest land uses together account for 16.36% of the TN and …

Gender Difference In Indian Consumption Expenditure., Mannu Dwivedi Dr. Feb 2019

Gender Difference In Indian Consumption Expenditure., Mannu Dwivedi Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The goal of any development policy is to increase the living standard of the people in the society. In any developing country, the efficiency of such policy depends on how families reallocate the resources among themselves. If the distribution is even within the family then only it can be said that the policy was fruitful. Therefore, a family is an important part of any policy and the allocation within the family should be just. But, the distribution of the resources among the family members are not always equal. Inequality always exists! Discrimination against girls or women persists in approximately all …

Elementary Education In-Service Teachers’ Familiarity, Interest, Conceptual Knowledge And Performance On Science Process Skills, Frackson Mumba, Erin Miles, Vivien Chabalengula

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Although studies have examined teachers’ science process skills, little is known about the extent to which in-service elementary teachers are familiar with science process skills and are interested in learning more about science process skills. Therefore, the purposes of this research study were to determine (a) in-service elementary teachers’ familiarity with, interest in, conceptual knowledge of, and performance on science process skills and (b) how in-service elementary teachers’ familiarity with, interest in, conceptual knowledge of, and performance on science process skills relate to each other. Forty-eight elementary teachers in 21 schools in the United States participated in this study. Data …
