The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
It seems counterintuitive to imagine the bloodiest conflict in American history being worse, but Sheehan-Dean argues that the death toll could have been dramatically higher without both sides’ emphasis on restraint, as dictated by the laws of war. Most of the book is spent examining “how people on both sides justified the lethal violence of conflict and when, how, and why they balanced cruelty and destruction.” Despite the rules of war, however, Civil War participants, like all humans, were contradictory. Sometimes they acted instinctively and spontaneously, while at other times, their actions were the result of deeply seated ideology. The …

Distancing Strategies, Exclusive Clusters And Other Ironies Of My American Peers, Mai Trinh
SURGE
Being able to study abroad is a huge privilege. I am very lucky to have been given that privilege twice. I was accepted to Gettysburg College two and a half years ago, and studied abroad in the United States. Now, I am studying abroad again in Copenhagen, Denmark with a program that connects many colleges and universities in the US. It has been a month now and I am having a good time.
But my first few weeks in Copenhagen were not the same as my first few weeks in Gettysburg. Strangely enough, it was much more uncomfortable and harder …

Coverage Of The Activities Of Zarathushra In Ancient Written Sources And Questions Of Their Interpretation.
Central Asian Journal of Education
The Zoroastrian religion and its holy book "Avesta" play a huge role in the study of the ancient history of Central Asia. In the Pahlavian sources, information relating to the Avestan texts, which have not been preserved to this day, has been preserved. They are greatly changed, but the value of this small part is very great. Based on written sources, parents, family members, classes and the place of propaganda of the prophet Zarathushtra were identified. Zoroaster was the "Zaotar" (the chief priest). The place and time of his birth, which require additional consideration, is still at the center of …

Putting The Blue In The Green New Deal, Jason Scorse, David Helvarg
Working Papers
The Green New Deal (GND) is a U.S. resolution that aims to address economic inequality and global warming through a set of proposed economic stimulus projects. As nearly half of the U.S. populace lives in or near coastal areas, the GND needs to prioritize the sustainable use and preservation of the marine environment – called the “blue economy.” David Helvarg of Blue Frontier and Jason Scorse of the International Environmental Policy Program and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies suggest a series of policy and investment priorities for incorporation of the blue economy into the GND.

Mid-Career Adult Learners In An Online Doctoral Program And The Drivers Of Their Academic Self-Regulation: The Importance Of Social Support And Parent Education Level, Peter E. Williams, Natalie Wall, Wade W. Fish
School of Educational Leadership
Adult professionals enroll in online graduate programs and rely on social support and on their ability to self-regulate to be successful. The literature on academic self-regulation among emerging adults (traditional college age) is ample, but we do not know how social support interacts with academic self- regulation among adult graduate students at mid-career, particularly among those students who are first generation college goers. This study addressed the following questions: (1) To what degree do parental education level and cohort progression predict academic self-regulation? and (2) What sources of social support – family, friends, loved one (significant other), and classmates – …

Young rifts are shaped by combined tectonic and surface processes and climate, yet few records exist to evaluate the interplay of these processes over an extended period of early rift-basin development. Here, we present the longest and highest resolution record of sediment flux and paleoenvironmental changes when a young rift connects to the global oceans. New results from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 381 in the Corinth Rift show 10s–100s of kyr cyclic variations in basin paleoenvironment as eustatic sea level fluctuated with respect to sills bounding this semi-isolated basin, and reveal substantial corresponding changes in the volume and …

Flow And Water Quality Assessment Of The Jordan Creek Underground, Springfield, Missouri, Marc R. Owen, Sarah Letarte, Robert T. Pavlowsky
OEWRI Technical Reports
The City of Springfield has contracted the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute at Missouri State University to measure stream flow and sample water quality parameters in the Jordan Creek Underground to determine potential inputs from leaking sewer lines and other shallow groundwater sources. Exfiltration losses from leaking sanitary sewer systems can cause pollution problems in receiving streams and water quality surveys have been used to locate wastewater exfiltration from sanitary sewers into local streams (Dove et al., 2013, Owen et al. 2017, Owen et al. 2018). Jordan Creek is located in central Springfield, Missouri and flows through an underground …
