Incorporating Active Adjustment Into A Financing Based Model Of Capital Structure, Neal Maroney, Wei Wang, M. Kabir Hassan Feb 2019

Incorporating Active Adjustment Into A Financing Based Model Of Capital Structure, Neal Maroney, Wei Wang, M. Kabir Hassan

Business Faculty Publications

The conventional partial adjustment model, which focuses on leverage evolution, has difficulty identifying deliberate capital structure adjustments as it confounds financing decisions with the mechanical autocorrelation of leverage. We propose and estimate a financing-based partial adjustment model that separates the effects of financing decisions on leverage evolution from mechanical evolution. The speed of adjustment (SOA) is firm specific and stochastic, and active targeting of capital structure has a multiplier effect that depends on the size of financial deficit. Overall, we find expected SOA from active rebalancing
(30%) more than doubles what is expected from mechanical mean reversion alone (13%).

Neuroevolutional Methods For Decision Support Under Uncertainty, Nina Komleva, Olga Khlopkova, Matthew He Feb 2019

Neuroevolutional Methods For Decision Support Under Uncertainty, Nina Komleva, Olga Khlopkova, Matthew He

Mathematics Faculty Articles

The article presents a comparative analysis of the fundamental neuroevolutional methods, which are widely applied for the intellectualization of the decision making support systems under uncertainty. Based on this analysis the new neuroevolutionary method is introduced. It is intended to modify both the topology and the parameters of the neural network, and not to impose additional constraints on the individual. The results of the experimental evaluation of the performance of the methods based on the series of benchmark tasks of adaptive control, classification and restoration of damaged data are carried out. As criteria of the methods evaluation the number of …

Long-Term Evidence For Fire As An Ecohydrologic Threshold-Reversal Mechanism On Woodland-Encroached Sagebrush Shrublands, Christopher Jason Williams, Frederick B. Pierson, Sayjro K. Nouwakpo, Patrick R. Kormos, Osama Z. Al-Hamdan, Mark A. Weltz

Articles

Encroachment of sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) shrublands by pinyon (Pinus spp.) and juniper (Juniperus spp.) conifers (woodland encroachment) induces a shift from biotic‐controlled resource retention to abiotic‐driven loss of soil resources. This shift is driven by a coarsening of the vegetation structure with increasing dominance of site resources by trees. Competition between the encroaching trees and understory vegetation for limited soil and water resources facilitates extensive bare intercanopy area between trees and concomitant increases in run‐off and erosion that, over time, propagate persistence of the shrubland‐to‐woodland conversion. We evaluated whether tree removal by burning can decrease late‐succession woodland …

Validation: A Burgeoning Methodology For Mathematics Education Scholarship, Jonathan D. Bostic, Gabriel T. Matney, Toni Sondergeld, Gregory Stone

School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

Validity-related issues are a growing topic within the mathematics education community. Until recently, validation has been treated as something to gather when convenient or is rarely reported in ways that conform to current standards for assessment development. This theoretically-focused proceeding adds to a burgeoning theoretical argument that validation should be considered a methodology within mathematics education scholarship. We connect to design-science research, which is a well-established framework within mathematics education. The goal for this proceeding is to foster the conversation about validation using examples and to communicate information about validation in ways that are broadly accessible.

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Connexins (Cxs) and pannexins (Panxs) are highly regulated large-pore channel-forming proteins that participate in cellular communication via small molecular exchange with the extracellular microenvironment, or in the case of connexins, directly between cells. Given the putative functional overlap between single membrane-spanning connexin hemichannels and Panx channels, and cardiovascular system prevalence, we generated the first Cx40(-/-)Panx1(-/-) mouse with the anticipation that this genetic modification would lead to a severe cardiovascular phenotype. Mice null for both Cx40 and Panx1 produced litter sizes and adult growth progression similar to wild-type (WT), Cx40(-/-) and Panx1(-/-) mice. Akin to Cx40(-/-) mice, Cx40(-/-) Panx1(-/-) mice exhibited …

Protein Ions Generated By Native Electrospray Ionization: Comparison Of Gas Phase, Solution, And Crystal Structures., Maryam Bakhtiari, Lars Konermann

Chemistry Publications

Experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in the literature indicate that gaseous proteins generated by electrospray ionization (ESI) can retain native-like structures. However, the exact properties of these ions remain to be explored. Focusing on ubiquitin and lysozyme, we examined several pertinent questions. (1) We applied solvent MD runs to test whether the X-ray structures of both proteins are affected by crystal packing. Main and side-chain orientations were retained in solution, providing a justification for the hitherto unscrutinized approach of relying on crystal data for "solution" versus gas-phase comparisons. (2) Most earlier gas-phase protein MD investigations employed short (ns) simulation …

The Politics Of The Law-Politics Dichotomy, Stephen M. Feldman Feb 2019

The Politics Of The Law-Politics Dichotomy, Stephen M. Feldman

Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law

Throughout American history, judges and legal scholars have articulated and maintained a sharp separation between law and politics. This essay asks the question: Why do so many judges and scholars devote so much time and energy to bolstering this law-politics dichotomy? Using William Baude and Stephen E. Sachs’s recent article “The Law of Interpretation as a Sp ringboard,” this essay explores the history and political valence of the dichotomy. From Baude and Sach’s perspective, politics is like a disease: if it infects legal interpretation, then it threatens the health of the judicial process. But the history of the law-politics dichotomy …

Restoring Reputational Rights Through A Government Publication Of A Declaration Of Innocence, Brent Miller Feb 2019

Restoring Reputational Rights Through A Government Publication Of A Declaration Of Innocence, Brent Miller

Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law

In a society that has become increasingly interconnected through advancements in technology, the stig matizing consequences of a false criminal accusation or conviction ca n be devastating. Ironically, unlike the technological advancements societ y has experienced, the ability to protect one’s reputation from such harm requires using the same limited remedies that existed decades ago. With few effective remedies available, those who have been falsely accused or convicted of a crime are without adequate ways to restore their reputations. To fill this remedial void, the federal government should create a forum whereby an individual’s innocence might be published as government …

Challenging Payday Lenders By Opening Up The Market For Small-Dollar Loans, Eliza Platts-Mills, Justin Chung

Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law

“Why hasn’t someone else stepped in to lend at lower interest rates?” is the question frequently asked in discussions of payday loans. The average payday loan carries an Annual Percentage Rate (APR) of over 300%. Given the strength of th e payday lenders lobby at the federal and state level, one way to help low- and moderate-income households escape the financial harms of pa yday loans is to encourage other lenders to enter the small-dollar loan market and offer more affordable products. Over the past ten years, an array of affordable small-dollar loan programs offered by banks, credit unions, non-profit …
