The Impact Of A Teacher’S Implementation Of The Readworks Digital Reading Program On Second Graders’ Reading Fluency And Comprehension Test Scores, Cynthia Molina

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

Since elementary school student performance on the end-of-year summative Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Standards of Learning (SOL) reading test is vital in impacting school accreditation, computer-assisted instruction has become popular. Online reading programs have existed in many elementary schools in Norfolk Public School district since 1996, such as Breakthrough to Literacy (McGraw-Hill Companies, 2002), Istation in 2014 (Mathes, Torgesen, & Herron, 2015), and the i-Ready program from 2015 to 2017 (Curriculum Associates, 2014). The problem is that there is insufficient empirical research supporting the use of the ReadWorks program at several Norfolk, Virginia’s elementary schools.

The purpose of this …

A Bidirectional Soft-Switched Dab-Based Single-Stage Three-Phase Ac–Dc Converter For V2g Application, Dibaker Das, Nathan Weise, Kaushik Basu, Rohit Baranwal, Ned Mohan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In vehicle-to-grid applications, the battery charger of the electric vehicle (EV) needs to have a bidirectional power flow capability. Galvanic isolation is necessary for safety. An ac-dc bidirectional power converter with high-frequency isolation results in high power density, a key requirement for an on-board charger of an EV. Dual-active-bridge (DAB) converters are preferred in medium power and high voltage isolated dc-dc converters due to high power density and better efficiency. This paper presents a DAB-based three-phase ac-dc isolated converter with a novel modulation strategy that results in: 1) single-stage power conversion with no electrolytic capacitor, improving the reliability and power …

Spatial or temporal aspects of neural organization are known to be important indices of how cognition is organized. However, measurements and estimations are often noisy and many of the algorithms used are probabilistic, which in combination have been argued to limit studies exploring the neural basis of specific aspects of cognition. Focusing on static and dynamic functional connectivity estimations, we propose to leverage this variability to improve statistical efficiency in relating these estimations to behavior. To achieve this goal, we use a procedure based on permutation testing that provides a way of combining the results from many individual tests that …

Noise-Tolerant Modular Neural Network System For Classifying Ecg Signal, Alberto Ochoa, Luis J. Mena, Vanessa G. Felix, Apolinar Gonzalez, Walter Mena, Gladys E. Maestre Mar 2019

Noise-Tolerant Modular Neural Network System For Classifying Ecg Signal, Alberto Ochoa, Luis J. Mena, Vanessa G. Felix, Apolinar Gonzalez, Walter Mena, Gladys E. Maestre

School of Medicine Publications

Millions of electrocardiograms (ECG) are interpreted every year, requiring specialized training for accurate interpretation. Because automated and accurate classification ECG signals will improve early diagnosis of heart condition, several neural network (NN) approaches have been proposed for classifying ECG signals. Current strategies for a critical step, the preprocessing for noise removal, are still unsatisfactory. We propose a modular NN approach based on artificial noise injection, to improve the generalization capability of the resulting model. The NN classifier initially performed a fairly accurate recognition of four types of cardiac anomalies in simulated ECG signals with minor, moderate, severe, and extreme noise, …

Pilot Study On The Impact Of Green Roofs On Ozone Levels Near Building Ventilation Air Supply, Pradeep Ramasubramanian, Olyssa Starry, Todd Rosenstiel, Elliott T. Gall Mar 2019

Pilot Study On The Impact Of Green Roofs On Ozone Levels Near Building Ventilation Air Supply, Pradeep Ramasubramanian, Olyssa Starry, Todd Rosenstiel, Elliott T. Gall

University Honors College Faculty Publication and Presentations

Outdoor air is often introduced into commercial buildings from ventilation intakes sited on rooftops where vegetation (a green roof) is increasingly present. Little is known about the impact of green roofs on the quality of building outdoor ventilation air supply. In this study, we investigated the potential for green roofs to impact ozone (O3) levels in ventilation air by parameterizing O3 dry deposition to vegetation and substrate typical of extensive green roofs in field and laboratory studies. Values obtained constrain a 2-D advection-diffusion model of O3 transport and reaction at the rooftop scale. The 10th …

Interaction Effects Of Socioeconomic Status On Emerging Literacy And Literacy Skills Among Pre-Kindergarten And Kindergarten Children: A Comparison Study, Kasey Thompson, Lydia P. Richardson, Heather Newman, Kathleen George Feb 2019

Interaction Effects Of Socioeconomic Status On Emerging Literacy And Literacy Skills Among Pre-Kindergarten And Kindergarten Children: A Comparison Study, Kasey Thompson, Lydia P. Richardson, Heather Newman, Kathleen George

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Socioeconomic differences in children’s reading and educational outcomes have been thoroughly documented throughout literature. Bobalik, Scarber, and Toon (2017) examined the link between socioeconomic status (SES) and classroom instruction on emerging literacy skills in pre-kindergarten children. The results supported the theory that children identified as belonging to a low socioeconomic status enter school with lower emerging literacy skills and benefit most from academic instruction; these children’s literacy skills substantially increased throughout the academic year, growing closer to those of their peers who were identified with a high socioeconomic status. The aim of the present study was to expand our understanding …

Pedagogical Techniques That Provide Educational Value To Social Work Students Through Bereavement Academics And Empathetic Advancements, Sandra Renea Williamson-Ashe Feb 2019

Pedagogical Techniques That Provide Educational Value To Social Work Students Through Bereavement Academics And Empathetic Advancements, Sandra Renea Williamson-Ashe

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

The lack of empathy in college students has been documented and empathy levels are reported to have declined over recent years. College student bereavement has not been well-researched (Balk, 2008) but the lack of declining college student empathy has documentation in psychological expressions (Balk, 2008). This article addresses social work students engaged in an academic bereavement assignment that incorporates student centered instruction (SCI) and “teaching through relationships.” Using an untimely social work students’ death, students utilize research, reflection, cooperative small group learning, and applied theory, to compose a writing assignment. Intentionally introducing the “sorrowful empty chair” in the bereavement assignment …

An Exploratory Investigation Of A Flipped Classroom Model In Human Services Education, Nicola A. Meade, Narketta M. Sparkman-Key Phd Feb 2019

An Exploratory Investigation Of A Flipped Classroom Model In Human Services Education, Nicola A. Meade, Narketta M. Sparkman-Key Phd

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Human services education has unique needs due to the practical elements that are a part of preparing students for the field. One aspect is for students to graduate with a firm capacity to enact the skill detailed by the National Organization of Human Services (NOHS, n.d.). A blending of on-campus and on-line components has been found to encourage higher order thinking and offer experiential learning (Rehfuss, Kirk-Jenkins, & Milliken, 2015). The flipped classroom pedagogical model offers one potential way for educators to create an environment that facilitates the learning needed and recommended. This study altered a class to the flipped …

Independent Educational Evaluations As Issues Of Dispute In Special Education Due Process Hearings, William H. Blackwell, Mertie Gomez

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

This study examined the pertinent details and outcomes of special education due process hearings (n = 100) that addressed independent educational evaluations as an issue of dispute in a 14-state sample. Variables related to the frequency of these cases, the characteristics of students involved, the specific types of IEEs requested, and the other related issues and outcomes were coded and analyzed. Psycho-educational evaluations were addressed in the most due process hearings, followed by speech-language evaluations, and neuro-psychological evaluations. Statistically significant associations were identified between states regarding a) the extent to which IEEs are issues of dispute in due process …

Training A Machine-Learning Based Object Detector For Use In Photography, Ruiduo Yang, Marc Levoy Feb 2019

Training A Machine-Learning Based Object Detector For Use In Photography, Ruiduo Yang, Marc Levoy

Defensive Publications Series

Cameras and other photography systems include the capability to detect objects of interest. Object detectors trained using sample data have a classification loss, e.g., due to insufficient training owing to a finite number of negative samples used during training. An increase in complexity of the object detector increases running time which necessitates a tradeoff between recall, precision, and speed. A common approach is to minimize the average loss across the entire training database. This disclosure proposes a new framework that takes the final image quality into account while training an object detector, by using a modified loss calculation function for …

Extension Of Public Warning System, Tim Lin, Aaron Lee

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques to relay public warning system (PWS) messages from a host device to user devices that cannot receive broadcast messages from a cellular network. A PWS message broadcast by a cellular network is received by the host device and relayed to user devices within a personal area network (PAN). Fields from the incoming PWS message are compared to previously received PWS messages to avoid duplication of messages. Relay of the PWS message by the router enables reception of the PWS message by user devices in the PAN that are not connected to the cellular network. User configurable …
