Race/Ethnicity, Citizenship Status, And Crime Examined Through Trauma Experiences Among Young Adults In The United States, Chistopher A. Mallett, Miyuki F. Tedor, Linda M. Quinn

Criminology, Anthropology, & Sociology Faculty Publications

Race/ethnicity, citizenship status, and trauma, have significant impact on delinquency and crime outcomes; though the rea- sons for some expected and unexpected crime pathways are still unanswered. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (n = 7,103), this study found the follow- ing results: no difference in the likelihood of engagement in delinquency and crime between blacks and whites; cumulative trauma increased delinquency and crime rates for all racial and ethnic groups; racial and ethnic minority groups compared to whites reported a significantly higher level of child- hood trauma experiences; and native-born female immigrant groups (but not …

A Numerical Analysis Of The Effects Of Wing Kinematics On Flapping Wing Aeroacoustics, Kabilan Nedunchezian, Chang-Kwon Kang, Hikaru Aono Mar 2019

A Numerical Analysis Of The Effects Of Wing Kinematics On Flapping Wing Aeroacoustics, Kabilan Nedunchezian, Chang-Kwon Kang, Hikaru Aono

PRC-Affiliated Research

Despite the recent interest in flapping wing aerodynamics, the aerodynamic sound generation mechanism of a flapping wing is inadequately understood. In this paper, the interplay between the wing motion, resulting unsteady aerodynamics, and aeroacoustics of a flapping wing flyer is investigated. The wing motion is varied in terms of the flapping amplitude, pitching amplitude, and the phase difference between flap and pitch. The unsteady flow around the flapping wing is numerically calculated using a well-validated Navier-Stokes equation solver. Acoustic pressures are computed using the Ffowcs-Williams-Hawkings equation in a three-dimensional space at varying distances from the wing. Two main sound generation …

Quantifying The Impact Of Weather Events On Travel Time And Reliability, Xu Zhang, Mei Chen Mar 2019

Quantifying The Impact Of Weather Events On Travel Time And Reliability, Xu Zhang, Mei Chen

Kentucky Transportation Center Faculty and Researcher Publications

It is of practical significance to understand the specific impact of weather events on the operating condition of the surface transportation system so that proactive and reactive strategies can be quickly implemented by transportation agencies to minimize the negativity resulted from adverse weather events. Many studies have been conducted on quantifying such effects yet suffer from limitations such as subjectively defining a time window under uncongested conditions and not being able to account for the severe impact from weather events which result in travel time unreliability. To overcome those shortcomings in existing literature, an integrated data mining framework based on …

Ordinary Differential Equation Neuralnetworks: Mathematics And Application Using Diffeqflux.Jl, Muhammad Moiz Saeed

Senior Capstone Theses

This paper has two objectives. 1. It simplifies the Mathematics behind a simple Neural Network. Furthermore, it explores how Neural Networks can be modeled using Ordinary Differential Equations(ODE). 2. It implements a simple example of an ODE Neural network using diffeqflux.jl library. My paper is based on the paper "Neural Ordinary Differential equations"[1] paper and contains multiple extracts from this paper and hence the work in chapter 4 should not be considered original work as it aims to explain the mathematics in the original paper and all credit is due to the authors of the paper [1]. This paper[1] was …

Examining The Impact Of An English In Action Training Program On Secondary-School English Teachers’ Classroom Practice In Bangladesh, Abdul Karim Mr., Abdul Rashid Mohamed Dr. Mar 2019

Examining The Impact Of An English In Action Training Program On Secondary-School English Teachers’ Classroom Practice In Bangladesh, Abdul Karim Mr., Abdul Rashid Mohamed Dr.

The Qualitative Report

English teachers in Bangladesh have undergone numerous training programs. Both government-initiated and donor-sponsored training programs have been in operation in Bangladesh. Government initiated institutions to train teachers are Primary Training Institutes (PTIs) and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs). However, researchers seemed to label training provided by PTIs and TTCs as inadequate. Bridging the gaps intrigued government of Bangladesh to devise donor-aided training programs, including English Language Teaching Improvement Project (ELTIP), English for Teaching, Teaching for English (ETTE), Secondary Education Quality and Access Enhancement Project (SEQAEP), Teaching Quality Improvement in Secondary Education Project (TQI-SEP). Studies reported their potential failure to bring changes …

Transparency And Coherence In A Doctoral Study Case Analysis: Reflecting On The Use Of Nvivo Within A 'Framework' Approach, Marjorie Bonello, Ben Meehan B.M.

The Qualitative Report

This article describes and reflects on the analytical process undertaken on a qualitative case study analysis exploring the concept of interprofessional education (IPE) in Malta. The analysis which employed the ‘Framework’ approach executed by qualitative data analysis (QDAS) software, specifically NVivo, served to produce an audit trail eliciting how the data, findings, interpretations and subsequent conclusions were all tracked and grounded in the raw data. This paper offers a reflective account of my experience in using NVivo highlighting the potential of this software as facilitating a more rigorous and transparent approach to qualitative data analysis.

Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence, Martina Schmeling Mar 2019

Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence, Martina Schmeling

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) spectrometry is a non-destructive and surface sensitive multi-element analytical method based on energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry with detection limits in the lower picogram range. It utilizes the total reflection of the primary X-ray beam at or below the critical angle of incidence. At this angle, the fluorescence intensity is substantially enhanced for samples present as small granular residue or as thin homogenous layer deposited at the surface of a thick substrate. Generally, two types of application exist: micro- and trace-analysis as well as surface and thin-layer analysis. For micro- and traceanalysis, a small amount …
