Faculty Socialization Of Graduate Students’ Attitudes And Perceptions Toward The Irb, Elisa Jolls Mar 2019

Faculty Socialization Of Graduate Students’ Attitudes And Perceptions Toward The Irb, Elisa Jolls

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Graduate student mistrust and fear of the institutional review board (IRB) is an issue that is commonly encountered at academic institutions. Research has shown that students emulate and are vulnerable to assuming the norms of faculty, which is supported by research that shows that students who have difficult relationships with the IRB often have faculty mentors who also have difficult relationships with the IRB. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how novice researchers’ perceptions of the IRB changed through their research submission and IRB interactions required during the IRB approval process, as well as to identify …

Seed For Oklahoma Kids Wave 3: Extending Rigorous Research And A Successful Policy Model, Margaret M. Clancy, Michael Sherraden, Sondra G. Beverly

Center for Social Development Research

With support from philanthropists, the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis (CSD) is conducting a third wave of research in the SEED for Oklahoma Kids (SEED OK) experiment. A research study of exceptional quality, SEED OK represents an opportunity to assess the long-term potential of Child Development Accounts (CDAS)—a national system of asset-building accounts for children and youth.1 Wave 3, taking place in 2019 and 2020, expands the original CDA in SEED OK with an automatic progressive deposit, and extends the longitudinal research to examine the impacts of the CDA when the children are in middle …

Multi-Modality Empowered Network For Facial Action Unit Detection, Peng Liu, Zheng Zhang, Huiyuan Yang, Lijun Yin Mar 2019

Multi-Modality Empowered Network For Facial Action Unit Detection, Peng Liu, Zheng Zhang, Huiyuan Yang, Lijun Yin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a new thermal empowered multi-task network (TEMT-Net) to improve facial action unit detection. Our primary goal is to leverage the situation that the training set has multi-modality data while the application scenario only has one modality. Thermal images are robust to illumination and face color. In the proposed multi-task framework, we utilize both modality data. Action unit detection and facial landmark detection are correlated tasks. To utilize the advantage and the correlation of different modalities and different tasks, we propose a novel thermal empowered multi-task deep neural network learning approach for action unit detection, facial landmark detection …

Evaluating Seasonal Nutrient Fluxes In Emerging And Eroding Wetlands Of The Louisiana Delta Plain, Kiran Upreti Mar 2019

Evaluating Seasonal Nutrient Fluxes In Emerging And Eroding Wetlands Of The Louisiana Delta Plain, Kiran Upreti

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Deltaic wetlands can ameliorate high NO3- loads via denitrification, a dominant NO3- reduction pathway in inland and coastal habitats. Dissimilatory Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia (DNRA), in contrast to denitrification, conserves N within the system and has been found to be favored over denitrification with increase in salinity and temperature. There are no studies in the Louisiana Deltaic plain with simultaneous estimation of denitrification and DNRA. Increased P availability has been shown to increase denitrification so it is essential to understand P biogeochemistry when studying N cycle. Here, we evaluated net denitrification using N2:Ar and …

Carceral Dreams: Punishment In Contemporary Utopian Fiction, Amandine Faucheux Mar 2019

Carceral Dreams: Punishment In Contemporary Utopian Fiction, Amandine Faucheux

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the representation of legal violence—punishment—is an essential definitional axis to utopian literature. Utopian scholarship tends to position the political or economic system that a text imagines as the key determinant of that text’s identity as a Utopia, a dystopia, or an anti-Utopia. I propose instead that the propensity of the imaginary society to inflict violence in a legal or official context defines its utopian or dystopian quality. Through an analysis of twentieth and twenty-first century Anglophone utopian novels and stories by George Orwell, Octavia E. Butler, James Tiptree Jr. (Alice Sheldon), Adam Roberts, and Kelley Eskridge, …
