Mechanisms Of Arsenic-Induced Suppression Of Early Red Blood Cell Development, Sebastian Medina Mar 2019

Mechanisms Of Arsenic-Induced Suppression Of Early Red Blood Cell Development, Sebastian Medina

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Anemia adversely impacts the health of more than a billion people worldwide. A strong association between anemia and arsenic exposure has been reported in epidemiological studies from multiple countries. However, the mechanistic bases for the association between arsenic exposure and anemia is not fully understood. In this study, we found an inverse association between drinking water arsenic exposures and clinical indicators of anemia (i.e., red blood cell counts and hematocrit/packet cell volumes) in a cohort of men from rural Bangladesh enrolled in the Health Effects of Arsenic Longitudinal Study.

Follow-up studies in mice, revealed that 60-day exposure to trivalent inorganic …

Examining The Association Between Childhood Exposure To Substance-Abusive Environments And Factor Two Psychopathic Traits, Cordelia Chou Mar 2019

Examining The Association Between Childhood Exposure To Substance-Abusive Environments And Factor Two Psychopathic Traits, Cordelia Chou

Student Theses

Psychopathy is a multidimensional construct consisting of aberrant personality characteristics that are categorized as either affective and interpersonal (F1) or antisocial and deviant traits (F2). While the differentiation between F1 and F2 psychopathic traits has been studied, limited research examines the etiologies of the factors. Existing theory hypothesizes that the development of F1 traits is influenced by biological factors, whereas F2 traits arise from environmental influences. F2 traits are theorized to develop as a defensive behavior when individuals are constantly exposed to unhealthy environments or persistent traumatic experiences. One example of an unhealthy environment is exposure to a substance-abusing environment …

Exploring Boarding Strategies For High-Speed Railway, Tie-Qiao Tang, Yi-Xiao Shao, Liang Chen, Hai-Jun Huang, Ziqi Song

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

In light of the increasing demand for passenger transportation on high-speed railway (HSR), the pedestrian flow at HSR stations has become quite crowded in many countries, which has attracted researchers to study the HSR boarding behavior. In this paper, we propose three boarding strategies based on the features of the boarding behavior at an origin HSR station; we then use a cellular automaton (CA) model to study the impacts of boarding strategies on each passenger’s motion during the boarding process at HSR station. The simulation results indicate that some of the three strategies can optimize some passengers’ boarding time and …

Spontaneous Vicarious Perception Of The Content Of Another’S Visual Perspective, Eleanor Ward, Giorgio Ganis, Patric Bach Mar 2019

Spontaneous Vicarious Perception Of The Content Of Another’S Visual Perspective, Eleanor Ward, Giorgio Ganis, Patric Bach

School of Psychology

Visual perspective taking (VPT) is a core process of social cognition, providing humans with insights into how the environment looks from another’s point of view [1-4]. While VPT is often described as a quasi-perceptual phenomenon [5,6], evidence for this proposal has been lacking. Here we provide direct evidence that another’s perspective can “stand in” for own sensory input perceptual decision-making. In a variant of the classic mental rotation task, participants judged whether characters presented in different orientations were canonical or mirror-inverted. In the absence of another person, we replicate the well-established positive linear relationship between recognition times and angle of …

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Faculty Scholarship

One major question in the cognitive neuroscience of cognitive control is whether prefrontal regions contribute to control by upregulating the processing of task-relevant material or by downregulating the processing of task-irrelevant material. Here we take a unique approach to addressing this question by using multi-voxel pattern analysis, which allowed us to determine the degree to which each of the task-relevant and task-irrelevant dimensions of a stimulus are being processed in posterior cortex on a trial-by-trial basis. In our study, adolescent participants performed an emotion word – emotional face Stroop task requiring them to determine the emotional valence (positive, negative) of …

Democratic Failure In Various Forms Of Democracy, Jonathan Lederer Mar 2019

Democratic Failure In Various Forms Of Democracy, Jonathan Lederer

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Democratic Failure is a problem which has plagued democratic states since their earliest instances, and increasingly is a problem in the world today. Accordingly, a question to ask is, “Are certain forms of democracy more likely to experience democratic failure than others?” The correlation between democratic failure and a state’s executive institutional structure has been researched extensively, while the correlation between a state’s legal tradition and democratic failure has been studied far less. This thesis attempts to confirm the conventional wisdom that certain democratic institutional structures are more likely to fail, and attempts to find out whether certain legal traditions …

Dynamics Of Utah's Agricultural Landscapes In Response To Urbanization: A Comparison Between Irrigated And Non-Irrigated Agricultural Lands, Enjie Li, Joanna Endter-Wada, Shujuan Li Mar 2019

Dynamics Of Utah's Agricultural Landscapes In Response To Urbanization: A Comparison Between Irrigated And Non-Irrigated Agricultural Lands, Enjie Li, Joanna Endter-Wada, Shujuan Li

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

In the literature on how urbanization affects agricultural landscapes, little attention has been focused on differentiating and comparing the changes in irrigated agricultural landscapes to non-irrigated agricultural landscapes. Additionally, there have been few applications of landscape metrics for understanding agricultural landscape changes. The objectives of this study were to:(1) analyze and compare the changes of both irrigated and non-irrigated agricultural lands in a rapidly growing region; (2) identify the spatial patterns and hotspots of these changes; and,(3) examine the spatial relationships between changes in agricultural landscapes and urban development. We adopted landscape metrics and gradient analysis to assess where and …

Nelfe-Dependent Myc Signature Identifies A Unique Cancer Subtype In Hepatocellular Carcinoma., Hien Dang, Yotsawat Pomyen, Sean P. Martin, Dana A. Dominguez, Sun Young Yim, Ju-Seog Lee, Anuradha Budhu, Ashesh P. Shah, Adam S. Bodzin, Xin Wei Wang

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

The MYC oncogene is dysregulated in approximately 30% of liver cancer. In an effort to exploit MYC as a therapeutic target, including in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), strategies have been developed on the basis of MYC amplification or gene translocation. Due to the failure of these strategies to provide accurate diagnostics and prognostic value, we have developed a Negative Elongation Factor E (NELFE)-Dependent MYC Target (NDMT) gene signature. This signature, which consists of genes regulated by MYC and NELFE, an RNA binding protein that enhances MYC-induced hepatocarcinogenesis, is predictive of NELFE/MYC-driven tumors that would otherwise not be identified by gene amplification …
