An Alternative Fundamental Weighting Scheme Based On Enterprise Value Multiple, Wenguang Lin, Gary C. Sanger Mar 2019

An Alternative Fundamental Weighting Scheme Based On Enterprise Value Multiple, Wenguang Lin, Gary C. Sanger

Faculty Publications

Fundamental indexing has been proposed as a semi-active strategy that outperforms classical market-capitalization weighting. This paper proposes an alternative weighting scheme based on the enterprise value multiple (EM) that integrates the market value of equity with debt information. Over the period 1972–2017, the EM-weighted index has lower tracking error and a higher information ratio when compared with a composite fundamental index in US equities. The EM index generates an information ratio of 0.71 which is larger than the composite fundamental index. The EM index also generates significant alpha that exceeds the traditional fundamental index using several asset pricing models. Further …

Genetic And Physical Interactions Between The Organellar Mechanosensitive Ion Channel Homologs Msl1, Msl2, And Msl3 Reveal A Role For Inter-Organellar Communication In Plant Development, Josephine S. Lee, Margaret E. Wilson, Ryan A. Richardson, Elizabeth S. Haswell Mar 2019

Haswell

Biology Faculty Research

Plant development requires communication on many levels, including between cells and between organelles within a cell. For example, mitochondria and plastids have been proposed to be sensors of environmental stress and to coordinate their re- sponses. Here we present evidence for communication between mitochondria and chloroplasts during leaf and root development, based on genetic and physical inter- actions between three Mechanosensitive channel of Small conductance-Like (MSL) proteins from Arabidopsis thaliana. MSL proteins are Arabidopsis homologs of the bac- terial Mechanosensitive channel of Small conductance (MscS), which relieves cellular osmotic pressure to protect against lysis during hypoosmotic shock. MSL1 localizes to …

We produce a variety of collection analysis reports which are used for several collection management functions, such as assessment, evaluation, and administration. We have now developed a Collection Review report which includes 100+ journal and package level data elements and dozens of data visualizations, built up from several hundred underlying lists from numerous data sources. Because we bring so many data elements together, we have also developed new metrics …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Processing of memory is supported by coordinated activity in a network of sensory, association, and motor brain regions. It remains a major challenge to determine where memory is encoded for later retrieval. Here, we used direct intracranial brain recordings from epilepsy patients performing free recall tasks to determine the temporal pattern and anatomical distribution of verbal memory encoding across the entire human cortex. High γ frequency activity (65-115 Hz) showed consistent power responses during encoding of subsequently recalled and forgotten words on a subset of electrodes localized in 16 distinct cortical areas activated in the tasks. More of the high …

Hematology/Oncology Articles

PURPOSE:: Participation of racial and ethnic minority groups (REMGs) in cancer trials is disproportionately low despite a high prevalence of certain cancers in REMG populations. We aimed to identify notable practices used by leading US cancer centers that facilitate REMG participation in cancer trials.

METHODS:: The National Minority Quality Forum and Sustainable Healthy Communities Diverse Cancer Communities Working Group developed criteria by which to identify eligible US cancer centers-REMGs comprise 10% or more of the catchment area; a 10% to 50% yearly accrual rate of REMGs in cancer trials; and the presence of formal community outreach and diversity enrollment programs. …

Promoting Persistence Among Lgbtq Community College Students, Gregory D. Robinson Mar 2019

Promoting Persistence Among Lgbtq Community College Students, Gregory D. Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

A vast amount of research has been devoted to the persistence and retention of college students since the 1970s. Recent research has focused on targeted populations such as first year students, racially minoritized, students with low social economic status and students at the developmental/remedial level. Nevertheless, limited scholarly research has been conducted on the persistence and retention of another category of students, sexual and gender minorities. This qualitative study examined the experiences that promote persistence among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) community colleges students. Interviews with eight LGBTQ students from three community colleges in the state of Illinois …

Soma-Axon Coupling Configurations That Enhance Neuronal Coincidence Detection, Joshua H. Goldwyn, M. W. H. Remme, J. Rinzel Mar 2019

Soma-Axon Coupling Configurations That Enhance Neuronal Coincidence Detection, Joshua H. Goldwyn, M. W. H. Remme, J. Rinzel

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

Coincidence detector neurons transmit timing information by responding preferentially to concurrent synaptic inputs. Principal cells of the medial superior olive (MSO) in the mammalian auditory brainstem are superb coincidence detectors. They encode sound source location with high temporal precision, distinguishing submillisecond timing differences among inputs. We investigate computationally how dynamic coupling between the input region (soma and dendrite) and the spike-generating output region (axon and axon initial segment) can enhance coincidence detection in MSO neurons. To do this, we formulate a two-compartment neuron model and characterize extensively coincidence detection sensitivity throughout a parameter space of coupling configurations. We focus on …
