Instance-Based Deep Transfer Learning, Tianyang Wang, Jun Huan, Michelle Zhu Mar 2019

Instance-Based Deep Transfer Learning, Tianyang Wang, Jun Huan, Michelle Zhu

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Deep transfer learning recently has acquired significant research interest. It makes use of pre-trained models that are learned from a source domain, and utilizes these models for the tasks in a target domain. Model-based deep transfer learning is probably the most frequently used method. However, very little research work has been devoted to enhancing deep transfer learning by focusing on the influence of data. In this paper, we propose an instance-based approach to improve deep transfer learning in a target domain. Specifically, we choose a pre-trained model from a source domain and apply this model to estimate the influence of …

Gender Differences In Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy As A Secondary Diagnosis: Higher Hospital Charges, More Procedures, And Longer Length Of Stays, Daniel Westerdahl, Hsin-Fang Li, Amir Yazdani, Kateri Spinelli, Tyler J Gluckman Mar 2019

Gender Differences In Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy As A Secondary Diagnosis: Higher Hospital Charges, More Procedures, And Longer Length Of Stays, Daniel Westerdahl, Hsin-Fang Li, Amir Yazdani, Kateri Spinelli, Tyler J Gluckman

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Background

The incidence of Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy (TC) has risen steadily over the past decade, with current estimates of 15-30 cases per 100,000 per year. Historically, men diagnosed with TC have worse outcomes compared to women. The relationship between total hospital charges, number of procedures performed, and length of stay (LOS) between genders has not been previously reported with TC as a secondary diagnosis.

Methods

National Inpatient Sample (NIS) data from 2009-2015 was used to identify encounters of adult patients (≥18 years) undergoing coronary angiography that were ultimately given a secondary diagnosis of TC (International Classification of Diseases – 9 code …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

The success of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) stems from its ability to remain hidden from the immune system within macrophages. Here, we report a new technology (Path-seq) to sequence miniscule amounts of MTB transcripts within up to million-fold excess host RNA Using Path-seq and regulatory network analyses, we have discovered a novel transcriptional program for in vivo mycobacterial cell wall remodeling when the pathogen infects alveolar macrophages in mice. We have discovered that MadR transcriptionally modulates two mycolic acid desaturases desA1/desA2 to initially promote cell wall remodeling upon in vitro macrophage infection and, subsequently, reduces mycolate biosynthesis upon entering …

Branch Rickey, Affirmative Action And 'Merit' In Baseball And Education, Evan H. Caminker

Book Chapters

When General Manager Wesley Branch Rickey broke Organized Baseball’s longstanding color barrier on October 23, 1945, by signing Jackie Robinson to a contract to play for the Montreal Royals, a minor league affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Rickey catalyzed the movement for racial justice. Millions of people saw, heard, and read about black and white men playing side-by-side. Integrating the national pastime helped challenge segregationist norms across the land, facilitating the integration of military troops and public schools soon thereafter.

Rickey’s stirring call in his 1956 Atlanta address to judge people on their merits rather than their pigmentation still resonates …

Self-Assembled Bismuth Selenide (Bi2se3) Quantum Dots Grown By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Marcel S. Claro, Ido Levy, Abhinandan Gangopadhyay, David J. Smith, Maria C. Tamargo

Publications and Research

We report the growth of self-assembled Bi2se3 quantum dots (QDs) by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs substrates using the droplet epitaxy technique. The QD formation occurs after anneal of Bismuth droplets under Selenium flux. Characterization by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray reflectance spectroscopy is presented. Raman spectra confirm the QD quality. The quantum dots are crystalline, with hexagonal shape, and have average dimensions of 12-nm height (12 quintuple layers) and 46-nm width, and a density of 8.5 × 109 cm−2. this droplet growth technique provides a means to produce topological insulator …

How Mentors At Starting Right Now Build Relationships With Homeless Youth: A Qualitative Analysis, Sheena Hera

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although research has described mentoring programs to have positive effects with youth, there are few studies that describe how mentors build relationships with homeless youth. In this study, I sought to explore how mentors of a community-based organization, Starting Right Now, built relationships with homeless youth. Starting Right Now is a multi-faceted, community-based intervention developed in 2009 in Tampa, FL. They provide services to homeless adolescents who are no longer living in the custody of a parent or guardian. The program provides residential, educational, recreational, and professional development services, as well as mental and physical health care. Additionally each youth …
