Reparation Ecologies: Regimes Of Repair In Populist Agroecology, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux, Stephen Carpenter, Alex Liebman, Renata Blumberg, Bhaskar Upadhyay

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

Amidst the backdrop of attention to populism in general, it is instructive to understand populism through social movements focused on food and agriculture. Agrarian populism is particularly salient in agrifood movements. Agroecology has been widely identified as a domain of populist claims on environmental and social governance surrounding agricultural–ecological and political–economic systems. As authoritarian populist leaders gain power throughout the world at a time of expanding economic globalization and contingent socioecological crises, contests over populism in agrifood regimes can highlight current dynamics relevant for formative evaluation of alternative political agroecology strategies and of populist environmental governance more broadly. Can populism …

Faculty Research 2019

Clinical variation in patient responses to myocardial infarction (MI) has been difficult to model in laboratory animals. To assess the genetic basis of variation in outcomes after heart attack, we characterized responses to acute MI in the Collaborative Cross (CC), a multi-parental panel of genetically diverse mouse strains. Striking differences in post-MI functional, morphological, and myocardial scar features were detected across 32 CC founder and recombinant inbred strains. Transcriptomic analyses revealed a plausible link between increased intrinsic cardiac oxidative phosphorylation levels and MI-induced heart failure. The emergence of significant quantitative trait loci for several post-MI traits indicates that utilizing CC …

New Workstations Signify The Rise And Fall Of My New Desk, Jerry Zezima

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

If you were to call me at work, which means you'd be operating under the delusion that I was actually working, you would hear this recording: "Hi, this is Jerry Zezima. I'm either away from my desk or at my desk but fast asleep. Please leave a message and I'll get back to you. BEEP!" Now I may have to change the recording because my office is getting new workstations (a fancy term for desks) that allow employees to work standing up.

Are you ready for DST Monday? We know it's coming. It happens every year. We think we can prepare for it. We can't. Daylight Saving Time was invented to save energy. That may be true in the fossil fuel sense of the word, but it doesn't save mom any energy.

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

The aim of the research is to establish safety standards for fire fighting within educational workshops in industrial secondary schools to determine the structural requirements for designing workshops in educational buildings and meet international standards. To achieve this a questionnaire was made and data collected for analysis and hypothesis testing using the statistical package of social Sciences (SPSS). Through the adoption of a number of different statistical methods and after conducting the analysis of research data and testing its hypotheses find a number of results, most importantly that the standards conform to international and local standards . Extraction Of Acids And Bases From Aqueous Phase To A Pseudoprotic Ionic Liquid, Nikolas Patsos, Karin Lewis, Francesco Picchioni, Mark N. Kobrak Mar 2019

Extraction Of Acids And Bases From Aqueous Phase To A Pseudoprotic Ionic Liquid, Nikolas Patsos, Karin Lewis, Francesco Picchioni, Mark N. Kobrak

Publications and Research

We report experiments on the extraction of acids and bases from an aqueous phase to a pseudoprotic ionic liquid phase consisting of an equimolar mixture of trihexylamine and octanoic acid. We observed the extraction of a wide range of acids and bases, and investigated the mechanism of extraction in detail. Our results confirmed the observation of the Hofmeister effect in these systems reported in our previous work, where the extent of the extraction of copper salts was significantly influenced by the interactions between extracted inorganic anions and the organic phase. Our results further demonstrated that the organic layer served as …

Aligning The Curriculums For College Success: High School And College Library Collaborations, Carl R. Andrews, Dickens Saint Hilaire

Publications and Research

In today’s highly competitive global economy, City University of New York (CUNY) graduates need strong critical thinking skills. More New York City students than ever before are applying to college and enrolling into CUNY schools. This is especially the case with high schools throughout the Bronx, a good portion of these schools are feeder schools for Bronx Community College (BCC). Unfortunately, many of the students who matriculate into BCC come un-prepared for college level work, where information literacy skills are essential. A strong body of published scholarly literature discusses the importance of information literacy instruction at the high school level, …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: Workplace or campus wellness/obesity-prevention policies and initiatives can improve health. Research tools to assess worksite or campus policies/initiatives are scarce. Thus, the aim of this research is to develop and validate the policies, opportunities, initiatives, and notable topics (POINTS) audit. Methods: POINTS was developed and refined via expert review, pilot-testing, and field testing. Trained researchers completed a web-based review from a student-focus or employee-focus regarding 34 health-promoting topics for colleges. Each topic was evaluated on a 0–2 scale: 0 = no policy/initiative, 1 = initiatives, 2 = written policy. When a written policy was detected, additional policy support questions …
