How Inclusion Became Exclusion: Policy, Teachers And Inclusive Education, Elizabeth J. Done, Mandy J. Andrews Mar 2019

How Inclusion Became Exclusion: Policy, Teachers And Inclusive Education, Elizabeth J. Done, Mandy J. Andrews

Plymouth Institute of Education

It is almost two decades since a concept of inclusion as selective segregation was proposed as an alternative to the concept of full inclusion and inclusive education was reconfigured as providing children with varied educational settings in order to meet their needs. A version of this model of inclusive education subsequently gained political traction in England where the issue of segregated or mainstream provision is now constructed as a matter of parental choice and child voice. Meanwhile, the implications of this latest model of inclusive education for teachers and schools in a rapidly changing wider educational landscape have largely been …

Impact Of Reddit Discussions On Use Or Abandonment Of Wearables, Radhika Garg, Jenna Kim

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Discussion platform, Reddit, is the third most visited website in the US. People can post their questions on this platform to get varying opinions from fellow users, which in turn might also influence their behavior and choices. Wearables are becoming widely adopted, yet challenges persist in their effective long term use because of technical and device related, or personal issues. Therefore, by employing sentiment analysis, this paper aims to analyze how decisions of use or abandonment of wearables are influenced by discussions on Reddit. The results are based on the analysis of 6680 posts and their associated 50,867 comments posted …

Textbook Affordability Is A Social Justice Issue: How Open Textbooks Are Paving The Way To Equality In Higher Education, Sarah Appedu Mar 2019

Textbook Affordability Is A Social Justice Issue: How Open Textbooks Are Paving The Way To Equality In Higher Education, Sarah Appedu

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: March 20, 2019, Eric Thompson Mar 2019

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: March 20, 2019, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 rose by 0.38% during February of 2019. The increase in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, implies moderate economic growth in Nebraska through the third quarter of 2019. Strong business expectations were the primary reason for the increase in the leading indicator. Respondents to the February Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase both sales and employment at their businesses over the next six months. Business expectations were at odds with other components of the indicator. Building permts for single-family homes and manufacturing …

A Robust Decision Support Leader-Follower Framework For Design Of Contamination Warning System In Water Distribution Network, Mohammad S. Khorshidi, Mohammad Reza Nikoo, Elham Ebrahimi, Mojtaba Sadegh Mar 2019

A Robust Decision Support Leader-Follower Framework For Design Of Contamination Warning System In Water Distribution Network, Mohammad S. Khorshidi, Mohammad Reza Nikoo, Elham Ebrahimi, Mojtaba Sadegh

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In recent years, several models have been proposed to inoculate Water Distribution Systems (WDS) against impacts of accidental and/or intentional compromised water quality through optimal deployment of online monitoring sensors in the network, which is referred to as Contamination Warning Systems (CWS). Translating such modeling efforts to real-world practice is, however, a challenge as different involved parties may pursue conflicting goals and modeling-based recommendations may not justify all stakeholders’ criteria. It is, hence, pivotal to develop conflict resolution methodologies to support engagement of different stakeholders in securing a safe water distribution. The decision making structure for CWS design is often …

Designing Explanation Interfaces For Transparency And Beyond, Chun-Hua Tsai, Peter Brusilovsky Mar 2019

Designing Explanation Interfaces For Transparency And Beyond, Chun-Hua Tsai, Peter Brusilovsky

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

In this work-in-progress paper, we presented a participatory process of designing explanation interfaces for a social recommender system with multiple explanatory goals. We went through four stages to identify the key components of the recommendation model, expert mental model, user mental model, and target mental model. We reported the results of an online survey of current system users (N=14) and a controlled user study with a group of target users (N=15). Based on the findings, we proposed five set of explanation interfaces for five recommendation models (N=25) and discussed the user preference of the interface prototypes.

Exploring User-Controlled Hybrid Recommendation In Conference Contexts, Chun-Hua Tsai, Behnam Rahdari, Peter Brusilovsky Mar 2019

Exploring User-Controlled Hybrid Recommendation In Conference Contexts, Chun-Hua Tsai, Behnam Rahdari, Peter Brusilovsky

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

A hybrid recommender system fuses multiple data sources to deliver recommendations. One challenge of this approach is to match the changing user preferences with a list of static recommendations. In this paper, we present two user-controllable hybrid recommender interfaces, Relevance Tuner (for people recommendation) and Paper Tuner (for paper recommendation), which offer a set of sliders to tune the multiple relevance sources on the final recommendation ranking on-the-fly. We deployed the user interfaces to a real-world international academic conference with a field study. The result of the log analysis showed the conference attendees did adopt the interface in exploring the …
