Behavioral And Neuroanatomical Outcomes Following Altered Serotonin Expression And Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury In A Neonate Rodent Model, Sharon G. Casavant Mar 2019

Behavioral And Neuroanatomical Outcomes Following Altered Serotonin Expression And Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury In A Neonate Rodent Model, Sharon G. Casavant

Doctoral Dissertations

Children born prematurely (weeks, GW) risk numerous adverse medical events, with risks increasing as GW/size decreases. Preterm infants may experience ischemic and/or hemorrhagic events due to cardiovascular immaturity, leading to negative neural sequelae. These same infants are exposed to repeated painful/stressful procedures as part of life-saving care within the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Although necessary, chronic painful/stressful events have been associated with methylation of SLC6A4, a gene coding for serotonin transport proteins. Methylation of the gene is associated with reduced serotonergic tone, increased anxiety, depression, and incidence of autism. To gain a deeper understanding of the events associated with …

The James F. Henry Speaker Series: The Lgbtq Issues In The Workplace, New York Law School

Alternative Dispute Resolution - Past Events

Workplace rights of the LGBTQ community are in flux. Whether in private sector offices or public military service, it is difficult to identify and enforce—much less predict— how members of this community are protected, and how their productivity can be ensured. This panel will offer an overview of this complex state of affairs, guide dispute resolution practitioners, and propose suggestions of what might lie before us.

Beyond East Meets West: Space And Simultaneity In Post-Millennial Western Sufi Auto-Biographical Writings, Marcia Hermansen Mar 2019

Beyond East Meets West: Space And Simultaneity In Post-Millennial Western Sufi Auto-Biographical Writings, Marcia Hermansen

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This chapter considers the development of the genre of Western Sufi autobiography since the 1970s, focusing on four examples of the genre published since 2008; two by males (Nuh Ha Mim Keller and Michael Sugich) and two by females (Maryam K. Faye and Rabia C. Brodbeck). The thesis is that these autobiographies, written in English by individuals who have reverted to Islam, identify themselves as Muslim “Sufis” and are engaged in Sufi practices and traditions, draw primarily on the conventions and expectations of spiritual autobiography in Western contexts. In terms of locating Islamic elements in the texts, of particular interest …

Working Paper No. 14, Gramsci, Dugger And Hegemony, Devin Bales Mar 2019

Working Paper No. 14, Gramsci, Dugger And Hegemony, Devin Bales

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish connections between William Dugger’s understanding of subreption leading to corporate hegemony with Antonio Gramsci’s understanding of power and the hegemon. Specifically, this inquiry examines the similarities between both authors’ descriptions and understandings of power in a civil society. Going further, I draw parallels between Gramsci’s description of ‘passive revolution’ as a key process for achieving hegemony and Dugger’s explanation of the role ‘subreption’ plays in the rise of corporate hegemony in the United States. Finally, this inquiry explores connections between Gramsci’s writings on ‘Americanism’ and Dugger’s research into ‘corporate hegemony’. While Dugger does not cite …

Self-Collected Sampling Methods For Chlamydia And Gonorrhea Screening Among College Women: Exploring Patient-Centered Intervention Characteristics, Stacey B. Griner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: Young adults are disproportionately burdened by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhea; however, STI screening rates are low among this population. Given the barriers associated with screening, self-sampling methods used at home may be an innovative solution to improve STI screening rates.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore factors influencing chlamydia and gonorrhea screening among college women. This study had two aims: (1) assess factors associated with STI screening among college women and (2) identify informational needs and key intervention characteristics to inform the development of a patient-centered STI screening intervention.

Methods: Guided …

An Analysis Of U.S. Custom And Border Protection’S Tripartite Mexico Border Security Policy, Terence Garrett Mar 2019

An Analysis Of U.S. Custom And Border Protection’S Tripartite Mexico Border Security Policy, Terence Garrett

Political Science Faculty Publications

The Custom and Border Protection (CBP) border security policy was explicitly presented by former Acting Commissioner of CBP, David Aguilar, in testimony before the United States Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) on April 4, 2017 in testimony on the subject of “Fencing Along the Southwest Border.” Important for discussion here are the key components of the DHS/CBP/Border Patrol’s strategy, or sets of policies, laying forth elements of the border walls (including barriers, fences), personnel, and technology in order to hinder, or intercept, undocumented migrants (homo sacer) from entering the United States illegally—all socially constructed. Aguilar …

The Impact Of Infrastructure On Habitat Connectivity For Wildlife, Leslie Lynne Bliss-Ketchum Mar 2019

The Impact Of Infrastructure On Habitat Connectivity For Wildlife, Leslie Lynne Bliss-Ketchum

Dissertations and Theses

While roads can present weak to complete barriers to wildlife, depending on the animal and traffic volume, mitigations such as under-crossings and green bridges on highways at least partially increase the permeability of the landscape to some of these species. The few studies evaluating the effectiveness of these structures for at least three years typically focused on a single species. Here, we monitored the crossing structure under Boeckman Road, in Wilsonville Oregon, for wildlife activity across summer seasons for ten years, since construction of the road and subsequent opening to traffic. This long-term multi-species dataset, which includes monitoring when the …

Self-Assembly Of 3d Nanostructures In Electrospun Polycaprolactone-Polyaniline Fibers And Their Application As Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering, Samerender Nagam Hanumantharao, Carolynn Que, Smitha Rao Mar 2019

Self-Assembly Of 3d Nanostructures In Electrospun Polycaprolactone-Polyaniline Fibers And Their Application As Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering, Samerender Nagam Hanumantharao, Carolynn Que, Smitha Rao

Department of Biomedical Engineering Publications

The fabrication of synthetic scaffolds that mimic the microenvironment of cells is a crucial challenge in materials science. The honeycomb morphology is one such bio-mimicking structure that possesses unique physical properties and high packing efficiency in a 3-dimensional space. Here, we present a novel method for electrospinning polycaprolactone-polyaniline with continuous, self-assembled, uniform, interwoven nanofibers forming patterns without the use of templates or porogens. By using the approach presented here, unique architectures mimicking the natural mechanical anisotropy of extracellular matrix were created by varying the electric field. Adult human dermal fibroblasts (HDFa) cells were successfully cultured on the nanofiber scaffolds without …
