Examining Number Talks With Secondary Preservice Teachers, Alyssa Lustgarten, Gabriel T. Matney

School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

This paper shares an investigation of the impact of Number Talks on secondary preservice teachers’ number sense. Quantitative data was collected and analyzed regarding preservice teachers’ number sense. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in the number of strategies preservice teachers used to solve a mental mathematics problem. After experiencing Number Talks, nearly all of the preservice teachers responded that they would consider using Number Talks in their classrooms. Implications of the use of Number Talks with secondary preservice teachers are discussed.

Sunny And Share: Balancing Airspace Entitlement Rights Between Solar Energy Adopters And Their Neighbors, Joshua B. Landis Apr 2019

Sunny And Share: Balancing Airspace Entitlement Rights Between Solar Energy Adopters And Their Neighbors, Joshua B. Landis

Vanderbilt Law Review

In an effort to ameliorate the effects of climate change, state and local governments have made increasingly large commitments to support solar energy adoption. For solar investments to be successful, however, solar adopters require unobstructed access to sunlight, which is directly at odds with the interests of neighbors and developers who value vertical development, especially in urban centers. To mitigate these looming conflicts, governments have enacted a variety of laws that assign airspace entitlements to either solar adopters or their neighbors. Unfortunately, these solutions are all poorly tailored for dense cities, which is where future airspace conflict is likely to …

Five Whys Root Cause System Effectiveness: A Two Factor Quantitative Review, Barbara A. Key

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Several tools exist for root cause analysis (RCA). Despite this however, many practitioners are not obtaining the quality improvement desired. Those turning to literature for guidance would find most of the information resides in case studies with anecdotal outcomes. Since 5 Whys analysis has been one of the more pervasive tools in use, this study sought to add to the root cause analysis body of knowledge by investigating tool support factors. While studied in conjunction with 5 Whys, the support variables lend themselves to other root cause analysis tools as well. The purpose of the study was to utilize a …

Snc-Lavalin: Follow The (Big) Money, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

In 2011, the Harper government sold Canada's CANDU nuclear reactor division to SNC-Lavalin for $15 million. This transaction and subsequent dealings have sparked controversy and scrutiny, particularly amidst recent allegations of corruption. SNC-Lavalin's lobbying efforts for a Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA) have raised concerns about potential impacts on major nuclear projects in Canada, including reactor refurbishments and the construction of a Deep Geologic Repository. The company's history of bribery charges, including a notable case involving Libya, and its role in various high-profile corruption scandals have intensified calls for increased transparency and accountability. The situation underscores the need for vigilance in …

Human Multipotent Stromal Cell Secreted Effectors Accelerate Islet Regeneration, Miljan Kuljanin, Ruth M. Elgamal, Gillian I. Bell, Anargyros Xenocostas, Gilles A. Lajoie, David A. Hess

Paediatrics Publications

Human multipotent stromal cells (hMSC) can induce islet regeneration after transplantation via the secretion of proteins that establish an islet regenerative niche. However, the identity of hMSC-secreted signals and the mechanisms by which pancreatic islet regeneration is induced remain unknown. Recently, mammalian pancreatic α-cells have been shown to possess considerable plasticity, and differentiate into β-like cells after near complete β-cell loss or overexpression of key transcriptional regulators. These studies have generated new excitement that islet regeneration during diabetes may be possible if we can identify clinically applicable stimuli to modulate these key regulatory pathways. Herein, we demonstrate that intrapancreatic-injection of …

This study investigates the effect of local oestrogen therapy (LET) on the expression of proteins participating in collagen/elastin biogenesis and immune markers in vaginal tissues of post-menopausal women with severe pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Vaginal biopsies were collected from the anterior vaginal wall of informed and consented 52 post-menopausal women with severe POP undergoing total hysterectomy. Twenty-nine of the 52 women were treated with LET (in the form of vaginal oestrogen cream or tablet), while the remaining 23 untreated patients served as the controls. This study was approved by Sinai Health System REB. Vaginal tissue specimens were analysed for gene …

Novel Roles Of Mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin Signaling In Regulating Fetal Growth, Madhulika B. Gupta, Thomas Jansson Apr 2019

Novel Roles Of Mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin Signaling In Regulating Fetal Growth, Madhulika B. Gupta, Thomas Jansson

Paediatrics Publications

Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling functions as a central regulator of cellular metabolism, growth, and survival in response to hormones, growth factors, nutrients, energy, and stress signals. Mechanistic TOR is therefore critical for the growth of most fetal organs, and global mTOR deletion is embryonic lethal. This review discusses emerging evidence suggesting that mTOR signaling also has a role as a critical hub in the overall homeostatic control of fetal growth, adjusting the fetal growth trajectory according to the ability of the maternal supply line to support fetal growth. In the fetus, liver mTOR governs the secretion and phosphorylation …

A Protocol Paper On The Preservation Of Identity: Understanding The Technology Adoption Patterns Of Older Adults With Age-Related Vision Loss (Arvl), Colleen E. Mcgrath Apr 2019

A Protocol Paper On The Preservation Of Identity: Understanding The Technology Adoption Patterns Of Older Adults With Age-Related Vision Loss (Arvl), Colleen E. Mcgrath

Occupational Therapy Publications

There are a growing number of older adults with age-related vision loss (ARVL) for whom technology holds promise in supporting their engagement in daily activities. Despite the growing presence of technologies intended to support older adults with ARVL, there remains high rates of abandonment. This phenomenon of technology abandonment may be partly explained by the concept of self-image, meaning that older adults with ARVL avoid the use of particular technologies due to an underlying fear that use of such technologies may mark them as objects of pity, ridicule, and/or stigmatization. In response to this, the proposed study aims to understand …

Children’S Perspectives On Neighbourhood Barriers And Enablers To Active School Travel: A Participatory Mapping Study, Katherine Wilson, Stephannie Coen, Angela Piaskoski, Jason A. Gilliland Apr 2019

Children’S Perspectives On Neighbourhood Barriers And Enablers To Active School Travel: A Participatory Mapping Study, Katherine Wilson, Stephannie Coen, Angela Piaskoski, Jason A. Gilliland

Human Environments Analysis Lab (HEAL)

Children today are spending more sedentary time indoors than time playing and being active outdoors. The daily journey to and from school represents a valuable opportunity for children to be physically active through active school travel. The majority of research on children's active school travel omits children from the research process even though children interpret their environments in fundamentally different ways than adults. Our research uses innovative participatory mapping and qualitative GIS methods to examine how children's perceptions of their environments influence their school journey experiences. Through our thematic analysis of 25 map‐based focus groups, we identified three main themes …

Sympathetic Physics: The Keely Motor And The Laws Of Thermodynamics In Nineteenth-Century Culture, Robert Macdougall

History Publications

In Philadelphia in the 1870s, John Worrell Keely announced the invention of a fantastic new motor that could, he promised, drive locomotives, power factories, and even defy gravity without fuel or heat. The Keely Motor became the most notorious perpetual motion scheme of the nineteenth century, attracting believers and investors for nearly thirty years. This article explores the “work” the motor performed for Keely, his supporters, and his critics—not physical work, but financial, cultural, and psychological. To investors, the Keely Motor represented a dream of riches without effort. To Keely’s critics, the motor offered an opportunity to defend the legitimacy …
