Overwintering Red Velvet Mites Are Freeze Tolerant, Susan E. Anthony, Brent J. Sinclair Apr 2019

Overwintering Red Velvet Mites Are Freeze Tolerant, Susan E. Anthony, Brent J. Sinclair

Biology Publications

Although many arthropods are freeze tolerant (able to withstand internal ice), small-bodied terrestrial arthropods such as mites are thought to be constrained to freeze avoidance. We field-collected active adult red velvet mites, Allothrombium sp. (Trombidiidae), in winter in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, where temperatures drop below −20°C. These mites froze between −3.6° and −9.2°C and survived internal ice formation. All late-winter mites survived being frozen for 24 h at −9°C, and 50% survived 1 wk. The lower lethal temperature (LLT50; low temperature that kills 50% of mites) was ca. −20°C in midwinter. Hemolymph osmolality and glycerol concentration increased in midwinter, accompanied …

Educational neuroscience is an interdisciplinary research field that seeks to translate research findings on neural mechanisms of learning to educational practice and policy and to understand the effects of education on the brain. Neuroscience and education can interact directly, by virtue of considering the brain as a biological organ that needs to be in the optimal condition to learn (‘brain health’); or indirectly, as neuroscience shapes psychological theory and psychology influences education. © Verbruggen et al. Response inhibition is essential for navigating everyday life. Its derailment is considered integral to numerous neurological and psychiatric disorders, and more generally, to a wide range of behavioral and health problems. Response-inhibition efficiency furthermore correlates with treatment outcome in some of these conditions. The stop-signal task is an essential tool to determine how quickly response inhibition is implemented. Despite its apparent simplicity, there are many features (ranging from task design to data analysis) that vary across studies in ways that can easily compromise the validity of the obtained results. Our goal is to facilitate a more …

© 2019 American Neurological Association Objective: Patients with chronic stroke have been shown to have failure to release interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) from the intact to the damaged hemisphere before movement execution (premovement IHI). This inhibitory imbalance was found to correlate with poor motor performance in the chronic stage after stroke and has since become a target for therapeutic interventions. The logic of this approach, however, implies that abnormal premovement IHI is causal to poor behavioral outcome and should therefore be present early after stroke when motor impairment is at its worst. To test this idea, in a longitudinal study, we …

Spinal Stretch Reflexes Support Efficient Hand Control, Jeffrey Weiler, Paul L. Gribble, J. Andrew Pruszynski Apr 2019

Spinal Stretch Reflexes Support Efficient Hand Control, Jeffrey Weiler, Paul L. Gribble, J. Andrew Pruszynski

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

© 2019, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature America, Inc. Motor behaviour is most efficiently controlled by correcting only disturbances that influence task success. It is currently thought that such control is computed within a transcortical feedback pathway. Here we show that, for postural hand control, even the fastest spinal feedback pathway can produce efficient corrective responses, forcing a re-evaluation of how the nervous system derives the control laws that support motor behavior.

Education Publications

The market size of global education is estimated to reach USD 10 trillion by 2030. Concurrently, there has been a growth in private-sector engagement in education generally, the sector occupying the top priority for many private investors operating in Asia. However, there is a paucity of concrete data and little transparency in reporting, inhibiting knowledge-sharing. The central concern of this pilot project was to develop an openly accessible tool to begin to fill these gaps.

This report provides a detailed overview of the process of developing and piloting Invest-ED with philanthropic and impact investing actors supporting education in Asia. Invest-ED …

Science, Values, Traditional/Indigenous Knowledge And Dialogue Of Saberes, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

This article discusses the possibility of a constructive dialogue between modern science and traditional/indigenous saberes, including the saberes of the Traditional peoples of Latin America. The argument developed here depends on interpreting science in terms of multi-strategic research [P-MS]: it makes use of the distinction between decontextualizing strategies (SDs) and contest-sensitive strategies (SCs) and the theses: the methodological strategies adopted in research projects can vary with the characteristics of the objects being investigated; there are relations of mutual reinforcement between the adoption of a strategy and adherence to particular ethical and social values; there are limits on the types of …

Rhythms And Reading: Applying Literacy To The Music Classroom, Makenzie M. Davis Apr 2019

Rhythms And Reading: Applying Literacy To The Music Classroom, Makenzie M. Davis

Honors Theses

This research project seeks to demonstrate how literacy pedagogy can be used to teach music in the context of a music classroom. Born of the increased emphasis on literacy-based instruction in public schools, all teachers, regardless of primary content area, are expected to aid in the mission of teaching reading skills to all students. Oftentimes, teachers will forego their content area lessons in order to strictly teach a lesson on reading skills. Music teachers must be equipped to teach literacy within their music classroom without damaging the integrity of their music content lessons. Through comparative research, the project will parallel …

Obstacles And Motivators For Partnership Formation In A Multi-Dimensional Environment, Luke Fowler Apr 2019

Obstacles And Motivators For Partnership Formation In A Multi-Dimensional Environment, Luke Fowler

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

Partnerships are now essential to public service delivery. However, due to limitations in collaborative capacity, there are both obstacles and motivators for forming partnerships. Intergovernmental and cross-sectoral partnerships offer different advantages and disadvantages in extending public service missions in new directions. Using survey data of local air quality agencies, findings determine different factors contribute to partnership and non-partnership. Further findings suggest partnerships are driven largely by problem severity, but non-partnership is driven by specific benefits and risks associated with types of partners. Conclusions indicate that understanding non-partnership is a key to understanding partnership formation.

Understanding The Role Of Relationship Maintenance In Enduring Couple Partnerships In Later Adulthood, Jill M. Chonody, Jacqui Gabb

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Intimate relationships in later adulthood are understudied despite their positive association with health and well-being. This cross-sectional mixed methods study sought to redress this gap by investigating relationship maintenance in later adulthood. Our international sub-sample comprised 1,565 participants aged 55 + and in an ongoing relationship. Results from hierarchical multiple regression indicated that overall happiness with the relationship had the largest effect size on relationship maintenance, with 53% of the variance explained. Content analyses of open-ended questions identified companionship and laughter as some of the “best liked” aspects of the relationship. Housework/cooking and saying “I love you” were among the …
