The Cross Section Of Expected Returns: Evidence From Implied Beliefs Of Active Mutual Funds Managers, Jorge Sabat Apr 2019

The Cross Section Of Expected Returns: Evidence From Implied Beliefs Of Active Mutual Funds Managers, Jorge Sabat

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

I develop a new test to compare the performance of asset pricing models. Using the industry allocations of active US mutual funds, I employ a structural model to estimate the implied expected returns on industry portfolios. For each asset pricing model, I use the factor loadings and the implied expected returns to calculate the implied expected factor risk premium. I compare the models based on the implied Sharpe ratio of the market portfolio. My methodology identifies the asset pricing model that not only generates the highest Sharpe ratio for the market but also best tracks the ex-ante Sharpe ratio. I …

Search For W Boson Decays To Three Charged Pions, A. M. Sirunyan Apr 2019

Search For W Boson Decays To Three Charged Pions, A. M. Sirunyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

For the first time, a search for the rare decay of the W boson to three charged pions has been performed. Proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.3 fb−1, have been analyzed. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation. An upper limit of 1.01 × 10−6 is set at 95% confidence level on the branching fraction of the W boson to three charged pions. This provides a strong motivation for theoretical calculations of this branching fraction.

Nitrogen Fertilizer And Irrigation Effects On Seed Yield And Oil In Camelina, K. F. Bronson, Douglas J. Hunsaker, Kelly R. Thorp Apr 2019

Nitrogen Fertilizer And Irrigation Effects On Seed Yield And Oil In Camelina, K. F. Bronson, Douglas J. Hunsaker, Kelly R. Thorp

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Interest is growing in camelina (Camelina sativa L. Crantz) as a biofuel feedstock. However, there has been little camelina research in irrigated arid systems. A 2-yr field study in Maricopa, AZ, under an overhead sprinkler irrigation system determined the effects of 10 water levels (irrigation fraction 0.5–1.1) and five N fertilizer rates (38–150 kg N ha–1) on seed yield, seed oil content, and N use efficiency. Cultivar Robinson was planted in December 2012 and 2013. Nitrogen fertilizer (urea ammonium nitrate) was applied in three split applications. Irrigation amounts were from 125 to 380 mm, and in-season rain was 70 and …

What Influences Nursing Students To Desire To Work In Geriatrics, Kim Alexander Decker Apr 2019

What Influences Nursing Students To Desire To Work In Geriatrics, Kim Alexander Decker

DNP and Student Works

The geriatric population is growing rapidly. Geriatric education in nursing school curriculum is vital. Undergraduate nursing students need to be educated about the multifaceted care of the older adult as well as experiencing positive clinical settings while taking care of the elderly population. The older adult perceives themselves as aging successfully and have much to teach nursing students about this perception.

Life‐History Differences Across Latitude In Common Side‐Blotched Lizards (Uta Stansburiana), Geoffrey D. Smith, Peter A. Zani, Susannah S. French Apr 2019

Life‐History Differences Across Latitude In Common Side‐Blotched Lizards (Uta Stansburiana), Geoffrey D. Smith, Peter A. Zani, Susannah S. French

Biology Faculty Publications

  1. Life‐history strategies are known to shift with latitude in many species. While life‐history variation related to body size, reproductive investment, and behavior has been studied for years, another crucial life‐history component is the immune system, which can influence an animal's survival.
  2. We measured selected life‐history traits in side‐blotched lizards in southern Utah and Oregon in the field for two consecutive years and conducted a common‐garden experiment in the laboratory to determine how organisms from different latitudes optimize either immunity or reproduction. We observed lizards from southern populations, which are known to be shorter‐lived, had lower immune function during reproduction when …

Factors Related To The Selection Of A Service Delivery Model: A Survey Of School Speech-Language Pathologists, Meredith Ann Egeland Apr 2019

Factors Related To The Selection Of A Service Delivery Model: A Survey Of School Speech-Language Pathologists, Meredith Ann Egeland

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

This research explored various factors school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) may consider when deciding which service delivery models to implement. An online cross-sectional quantitative survey was sent, nationwide, to currently employed school-based SLPs. A second round of surveys was provided to SLPs at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention. A third round of surveys was submitted to the Special Interest Group (SIG) 16: School-Based Issues. The survey was divided into three parts: Demographics, Caseload, and Workplace Characteristics. Responses were collected and analyzed using descriptive analysis to identify attitudes and current practices.

Metal-Insulator Transition (Mit) Materials For Biomedical Applications, Mohiuddin Munna, Protap Mahanta, Ronald A. Coutu Jr. Apr 2019

Metal-Insulator Transition (Mit) Materials For Biomedical Applications, Mohiuddin Munna, Protap Mahanta, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Transitional metal oxides get considerable interest in electronics and other engineering applications over few decades. These materials show several orders of magnitude metal-insulator transition (MIT) triggered by external stimuli. Bio-sensing using Vanadium dioxide (VO2), a MIT material is largely unexplored. In this short article, we investigate the VO2 based thermal sensor performance for measuring the biomolecule concentration. Active sensing layer is chromium and niobium co-doped VO2 as it shows 11.9%/°C temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) with practically no thermal hysteresis. Our study demonstrated that VO2 based microsensors can be used to measure the biomolecule concentrations, …

Low-Cost Carbon Fibre Derived From Sustainable Coal Tar Pitch And Polyacrylonitrile: Fabrication And Characterisation, Omid Zabihi, Sajjad Shafei, Seyed Mousa Fakhrhoseini, Mojtaba Ahmadi, Hossein Ajdari Nazarloo, Rohan Stanger, Quang Anh Tran, John Lucas, Terry Wall, Minoo Naebe Apr 2019

Low-Cost Carbon Fibre Derived From Sustainable Coal Tar Pitch And Polyacrylonitrile: Fabrication And Characterisation, Omid Zabihi, Sajjad Shafei, Seyed Mousa Fakhrhoseini, Mojtaba Ahmadi, Hossein Ajdari Nazarloo, Rohan Stanger, Quang Anh Tran, John Lucas, Terry Wall, Minoo Naebe

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Preparation of high-value pitch-based carbon fibres (CFs) from mesophase pitch precursor is of great importance towards low-cost CFs. Herein, we developed a method to reduce the cost of CFs precursor through incorporating high loading of coal tar pitch (CTP) into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer solution. The CTP with a loading of 25% and 50% was blended with PAN and their spinnability was examined by electrospinning process. The effect of CTP on thermal stabilization and carbonisation of PAN fibres was investigated by thermal analyses methods. Moreover, electrospun PAN/CTP fibres were carbonised at two different temperatures i.e., 850 °C and 1200 °C and …
