Superoscillations are band-limited functions with the counterintuitive property that they can vary arbitrarily faster than their fastest Fourier component, over arbitrarily long intervals. Modern studies originated in quantum theory, but there were anticipations in radar and optics. The mathematical understanding—still being explored—recognises that functions are extremely small where they superoscillate; this has implications for information theory. Applications to optical vortices, sub-wavelength microscopy and related areas of nanoscience are now moving from the theoretical and the demonstrative to the practical. This Roadmap surveys all these areas, providing background, current research, and anticipating future developments.

Ucp1 Expression-Associated Gene Signatures Of Human Epicardial Adipose Tissue., Kanta Chechi, Jinchu Vijay, Pierre Voisine, Patrick Mathieu, Yohan Bossé, Andre Tchernof, Elin Grundberg, Denis Richard

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Multiple reports of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression have established its presence in human epicardial adipose tissue (eAT). Its functional relevance to eAT, however, remains largely unknown. In a recent study, we reported that adrenergic stimulation of eAT was associated with downregulation of secreted proteins involved in oxidative stress-related and immune-related pathways. Here, we explored the UCP1-associated features of human eAT using next-generation deep sequencing. Paired biopsies of eAT, mediastinal adipose tissue (mAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (sAT) obtained from cardiac surgery patients, with specific criteria of high and low expression of UCP1 in eAT, were subjected to RNA sequencing. …

Concrete Crack Detection And Monitoring Using A Capacitive Dense Sensor Array, Jin Yan, Austin Downey, Alessandro Cancelli, Simon Laflamme, An Chen, Jian Li, Filippo Ubertini

Faculty Publications

Cracks in concrete structures can be indicators of important damage and may significantly affect durability. Their timely identification can be used to ensure structural safety and guide on-time maintenance operations. Structural health monitoring solutions, such as strain gauges and fiber optics systems, have been proposed for the automatic monitoring of such cracks. However, these solutions become economically difficult to deploy when the surface under investigation is very large. This paper proposes to leverage a novel sensing skin for monitoring cracks in concrete structures. This sensing skin is constituted of a flexible electronic termed soft elastomeric capacitor, which detects a change …

Deceleration: Slowing Down To Determine An Accelerated Loan’S Post Dismissal Status, Stephanie Schneider Apr 2019

Deceleration: Slowing Down To Determine An Accelerated Loan’S Post Dismissal Status, Stephanie Schneider

New Mexico Law Review

The autopsy report for the American Financial Crisis of 2007-2008 is lengthy, and, while examiners may disagree on the specifics, there is widespread agreement that the cause of death was a sudden and dramatic drop in the price of American houses. This precipitous drop, cataclysmic “pop,” was in part driven by the market correcting itself following years of home value appreciation. However, the effect of the correction was magnified by subprime lending practices that allowed borrowers without verified sources of income to obtain loans. Ultimately, this fallout coalesced into a dramatic increase in defaults on mortgage payments and a corresponding …

Sustainability In Quality Improvement And Patient Safety Initiatives, Angelo P. Giardino, Eileen R. Giardino Apr 2019

Sustainability In Quality Improvement And Patient Safety Initiatives, Angelo P. Giardino, Eileen R. Giardino

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

The question often asked of a quality improvement initiative is whether the improvement process has been sustained within the organization. Rarely is the question answered satisfactorily. The sustainability of an improvement process is important as it justifies the investment of human and financial capital. The term 'evaporation of improvements' addresses the dilemma that between 33% to 70% of all innovations are reportedly not sustained (Fleiszer, Semenic, Ritchie, Richer, & Denis, 2015) . This evaporation of improvement captures the frustrating inability of many institutions to maintain the achieved improvement after the newness of the initial effort wears off (Buchanan, Fitzgerald, & …

The Nineteenth Century British Workhouse: Mission Not Accomplished, Brenda Derin

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

ABSTRACT:

How to correct poverty in a society is extremely complex. In the nineteenth century, the British struggled to house, feed and care for the unemployed and destitute men, women and children created by the Industrial Revolution. Many in the upper classes considered poverty a moral failure, yet they had little impetus to end it. Poverty, as defined by an inability to provide for one’s needs due to a variety of factors, was seen as necessary, for without it there would be no motivation for the lower classes to work and provide a luxurious life for the wealthy.

Although some …

Teachers Perspectives On Student Behavior And Aces, Bridget Mudd

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Since 1998 substantial evidence has been available showing rates of prevalence for different types of adverse or potentially traumatizing experiences that can happen during childhood. In response, many studies have demonstrated the positive effects of trauma informed practices in environments that treat mental health issues. Despite supporting evidence, policy makers have been slow to implement these practices in schools. Teachers are on the front lines of this issue. They are in a position to be most effective in supporting children and most impacted by student behavior yet their voice is notably absent from the literature. The purpose of my research …
