United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Background: Centenarian studies are important sources for understanding of factors that contribute to longevity and healthy aging. Clinico-neuropathological finding is a key in identifying pathology and factors contributing to age-related cognitive decline and dementia in the oldest old.
Objective: To characterize the cross-sectional relationship between neuropathologies and measures of premortem cognitive performance in centenarians.
Methods: Data were acquired from 49 centenarians (≥98 years) from the Georgia Centenarian Study. Cognitive assessment from the time point closest to mortality was used (<1 year for all subjects) and scores for cognitive domains were established. Neuropathologies [cerebral atrophy, ventricular dilation, atherosclerosis, cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), Lewy bodies, hippocampal sclerosis (HS), hippocampal TDP-43 proteinopathy, neuritic plaque (NP) and neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) counts, Braak staging, and National Institute on Aging-Reagan Institute (NIARI) criteria for the neuropathological diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)] were compared among subjects with different ratings of dementia. Linear regression was applied to evaluate the association between cognitive domain scores and neuropathologies.
Results: Wide ranges of AD-type neuropathological changes were observed in both non-demented and demented subjects. Neocortical NFT and Braak staging …

An Oral History Of St. Mary's University School Of Law (1961–2018), Charles E. Cantú
St. Mary's Law Journal
Dean Emeritus Charles E. Cantú has worked at St. Mary’s University since 1966 when Dean Ernest A. Raba first hired him. He served as the youngest law professor in the nation at the age of twenty-five, and the first full-time Hispanic law professor. After a considerable tenure working at all three locations of St. Mary’s University School of Law and serving under four of the school’s most recent former deans, this article offers his personal recollections and observations of the history of the law school from the 1960s to the present.
This article is the culmination of a ten-hour oral …

Using Jones matrices and vectors, we show that a metasurface-based optical element composed of a set of subwavelength diffraction gratings, whose anisotropic transmittance is described by a matrix of polarization rotation by angle m, where is the polar angle, generate an mth order azimuthally or radially polarized beam, when illuminated by linearly polarized light, or an optical vortex with topological charge m, when illuminated by circularly polarized light. Such a converter performs a spin–orbit transformation, acting similarly to a liquid-crystal half-wave plate. Using the FDTD-aided numerical simulation, we show that uniform linearly or circularly polarized light passing through the …
Torsion Subgroups Of Elliptic Curves Over Function Fields, Robert John Sweet Mcdonald
Torsion Subgroups Of Elliptic Curves Over Function Fields, Robert John Sweet Mcdonald
Doctoral Dissertations
Let 𝔽 be a finite field of characteristic p, and C/𝔽 be a smooth, projective, absolutely irreducible curve. Let 𝔽(C) be the function field of C. When the genus of C is 0, and p ≠ 2, 3, Cox and Parry provide a minimal list of prime-to-p torsion subgroups that can appear for an elliptic curve E/K. In this thesis, we extend this result by determining the complete list of full torsion subgroups possible for an elliptic curve E/K for any prime p when the genus of C is 0 or 1.

The Development Of Evidence-Based Early Child Feeding And Obesity Prevention Messages For Parents Of Children Birth To 2 Years Old, Rebecca L. Heller
Doctoral Dissertations
Early childhood obesity from birth to 2-years (B-24) is a growing public health concern. The current lack of consistent and comprehensive child feeding materials may contribute to barriers in childhood obesity prevention. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers preventing parents of B-24 from implementing optimal feeding and obesity prevention practices and develop evidence-based messages to overcome these barriers.
For Phase 1 and 2, one-on-one interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, and thematic analysis was conducted. Phase 1 interviews with healthcare, community-based, and education providers working with families of B-24 identified barriers faced when promoting obesity prevention. Providers reported parental …

The Lived Experience Of Parenting A Child With Type 1 Diabetes In Poland: Adapting To "Fighting The Windmills", Dorota Pawlak
Doctoral Dissertations
The prevalence and incidence of type 1 diabetes worldwide has significantly increased in the past few decades. This increase had been particularly evident in Poland. Type 1 diabetes has been recognized as a family disorder rather than an individual disorder. Parenting a child with type 1 diabetes is challenging and requires assimilation of child’s newfound needs into family life. The purpose of this study was to describe the meaning of parenting a child with type 1 diabetes in Poland through the lens of the parents. A qualitative, descriptive phenomenological research designed was used. Participants (N =11) were interviewed in person …

A nursing learning model was developed to assist students, nurses and nurse educators in their understanding of the diverse ways that content and skills can be learned. During the development of the model, it became clear that students and nurses need to find a way to create powerful memories about illnesses and their treatment to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills in actual patient situations. Clinical experience is ultimately thought to be the best builder of critical thinking and practice skills. However, students and new nurses are often not able to participate actively in critical situations because of time …

What Happened To Venezuela?, Harris Jones
Honors Theses
By studying academic research, I investigate the root causes of the crisis in Venezuela today. The research studied lays out the historical factors that have contributed to the crisis. Venezuelan politics and global politics play a role in the crisis in addition to economic factors. The situation in Venezuela has been developing for years but has gained more attention recently as the economic crisis has caused a humanitarian and political crisis as well. I chose this topic because I am interested in how colossal crises occur and I am interested in Spanish speaking countries because it is my minor. Specifically, …

Don't Delete That Tweet: Federal And Presidential Records In The Age Of Social Media, Gabriel M. A. Elorreaga
St. Mary's Law Journal
Statutes governing preservation of presidential records must be adapted to accommodate presidents’ evolving use of social media accounts. The Freedom of Information Act is meant to promote government transparency, and subjects governmental agencies to information requests from members of the public. However, as it relates to social media records, the problem is one of volume; are the means of preservation currently in place able to adequately address the vast amount of records created by a President’s use of social media? This Comment argues that they are not, although they do provide a useful basis for how to adapt record preservation …

The analysis of molecular states of individual cells, as defined by their mRNA expression profiles and protein composition, has gained widespread interest in studying biological phenomena ranging from embryonic development to homeostatic tissue function and genesis and evolution of cancers. Although the molecular content of individual cells in a tissue can vary widely, their molecular states tend to be constrained within a transcriptional landscape partly described by the canonical archetypes of a population of cells. In this study, we sought to characterize the effects of an acute (partial hepatectomy) and chronic (alcohol consumption) perturbation on the molecular states of individual …

Numerical Modeling Of The Propagation Of Infrasonic Acoustic Waves Through The Turbulent Field Generated By The Breaking Of Mountain Gravity Waves, Michael P. Hickey, Jonathan Snively, C Bailly, J. L. Garrison
Publications
The nonlinear propagation of low-frequency acoustic waves through the turbulent fluctuations induced by breaking mountain gravity waves is investigated via 2-D numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations, to understand the effects of atmospheric dynamics on ground-based infrasound measurements. Emphasis is placed on acoustic signals of frequency around 0.1 Hz, traveling through tens-of-kilometers-scale gravity waves and subkilometer-scale turbulence. The sensitivity of the infrasonic phases to small-scale fluctuations is found to depend on the altitudes through which they are refracted toward the Earth. For the considered cases, the dynamics in the stratosphere impact the refracting acoustic waves to a greater extent than …

Hyperthermophilic methanogens are often H2 limited in hot subseafloor environments, and their survival may be due in part to physiological adaptations to low H2 conditions and interspecies H2 transfer. The hyperthermophilic methanogen Methanocaldococcus jannaschii was grown in monoculture at high (80 to 83 M) and low (15 to 27 M) aqueous H2 concentrations and in coculture with the hyperthermophilic H2 producer Thermococcus paralvinellae. The purpose was to measure changes in growth and CH4 production kinetics, CH4 fractionation, and gene expression in M. jannaschii with changes in H2 flux. Growth and cell-specific CH4 production rates of M. jannaschii decreased with decreasing …

The dioecious and andromonoecious Solanum taxa (the “S. dioicum group”) of the Australian Monsoon Tropics have been the subject of phylogenetic and taxonomic study for decades, yet much of their basic biology is still unknown. This is especially true for plant-animal interactions, including the influence of fruit form and calyx morphology on seed dispersal. We combine field/greenhouse observations and specimen-based study with phylogenetic analysis of seven nuclear regions obtained via a microfluidic PCR-based enrichment strategy and high-throughput sequencing, and present the first species-tree hypothesis for the S. dioicum group. Our results suggest that epizoochorous trample burr seed …
