The Nazi regime systematically stripped Jews and other persecuted groups of property through a framework of laws that gave their spoliation a veneer of legality. Postwar restitution programs, though groundbreaking in their efforts to provide individual victims with either compensation or the return of their property, were hampered by strict legal limitations, inconsistent procedures, and the slow pace of resolution. Contemporary restitution efforts increasingly recognize that legal avenues alone cannot fully redress these injustices. The United States Supreme Court has addressed the absolute core requirements of standing under Article III of the U.S. Constitution on several occasions. However, the Court has not clearly articulated what purpose standing serves relative to Article III’s limitations on the exercise of judicial power to only “cases” or “controversies,” and this has led to major downstream effects in the realm of multi plaintiff litigation. This exploratory and descriptive study analyses Víctor Erice’s film Cerrar los ojos with regard to three key concepts of the author’s work: childhood, memory and cinephilia. The method chosen is audiovisual text analysis framed within qualitative research, and interpretative content analysis. The results confirm Cerrar los ojos as an autofiction that creates a dialogue between the life and work of its author through lost identity, nostalgia for childhood and cinema as redemption.

Bone deterioration from osteoporosis creates fractures that primarily affect females who have reached menopause and older adults. Early detection of osteoporosis requires affordable methods because current diagnostic systems are both expensive and challenging to use. The current application of deep learning models for bone radiography analysis faces three major limitations: shallow architecture, insufficient dataset adaptation, and inadequate feature extraction methods. Introduction A generic research protocol was developed for a prospective cohort study to allow systematic, harmonized data collection of the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination during pregnancy on maternal, obstetric, and neonatal outcomes across different settings. This article describes the study conception, development, implementation, challenges, and key lessons learned within study sites across the world.

Methods The protocol was implemented in 43 facilities in 10 countries during the pandemic, involving consecutive recruitment of over 16,000 pregnant or postpartum women. Background: Falls in older adults often occur during unexpected gait termination, when rapid deceleration is required. Age-related declines in strength, proprioception, and coordination impair efficient distal-to-proximal braking, raising fall risk. Variable step lengths, ranging from “normal” steps to larger “big” steps used when hurrying, better reflect real-world walking demands and pose greater mechanical and neuromuscular challenges. This study investigated how age and step length affect muscle synergy complexity and joint coordination during unexpected gait stops.

Background Upper extremity amputations (UEAs) are medically, psychologically, and functionally devastating. This study aimed to evaluate region- and sex-specific differences in unilateral and bilateral upper extremity amputations in the United States (US) from 1990 to 2019. Methods The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database was used to analyze years lived with disability (YLDs), prevalence, and incidence rates per 100,000 people for upper extremity amputations in the US from 1990 to 2019. Data were stratified into four US Census Bureau-defined regions: Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. Differences between regions and sexes were assessed, with statistical significance defined as p< 0.05. Results Between 1990 and 2019, unilateral upper extremity amputations in the US showed a 34.51% decrease in YLDs, 34.34% in prevalence, and 37.38% in incidence. Bilateral amputations decreased by 51.32%, 48.94%, and 56.80%, respectively. Men consistently had higher YLDs, prevalence, and incidence rates for unilateral amputations (p< 0.001). Regionally, the Northeast had the highest mean YLDs, prevalence, and incidence, while the South had the lowest. Men also experienced significantly higher rates of both unilateral and bilateral amputations across all regions compared to women (p< 0.05). Conclusions From 1990 to 2019, the US experienced declines in YLDs, prevalence, and incidence of upper extremity amputations. Men had higher rates than women across all regions. The Northeast exhibited the highest rates, while the South had the lowest. These findings underscore notable gender and regional disparities in upper extremity amputation trends.

This chapter questions the starting assumptions in thinking through questions of “jurisdiction” in public law, specifically in relation to assertions of inherent Indigenous territorial governing authority. It reviews the common conceptual images of jurisdiction we employ in law schools and offers resources from critical interdisciplinary theory for new conceptions. In highlighting examples of the present exercise of Indigenous territorial jurisdiction, such as the Kunst'aa guu— Kunst'aayah Reconciliation Protocol and the Tsleil-Waututh Sacred Trust Assessment of the Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) project, the chapter urges public law scholars to adopt an orientation of prefiguration in order to bring into being conceptualizations …

Background Implementing small and sick newborn care (SSNC) requires skilled health workers; however, there is a shortage, adversely impacting patient outcomes and health worker well-being. There are limited data and no current World Health Organization (WHO) standards for staff-to-baby ratios in neonatal units in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to inform policy, planning, and investment.

Chimeric Contacts And Consent: The Ill-Reasoned Expansion Of Corporate Jurisdictional Exposure, James P. George

Two recent Supreme Court decisions have imposed aspects of general jurisdiction in a way that exposes corporations and possibly other legal actors to litigation in spuriously connected forums. One case—Ford Motor Company v. Montana—reached a fair result but with strained reasoning that will support unfair results. The second case—Mallory v. Norfolk Southern Railroad Company—was wrong on the facts and the law, imposing general jurisdiction based on a vaguely worded corporate registration statute validated by a more than century-old precedent based on Pennoyer v. Neff’s limited territorial model.

This Article informs the reader as to the current state of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC or Commission) Release No. 33-11275, The Enhancement and Standardization of Climate-Related Disclosures for Investors (the Final Rules), approved and then stayed by the Commission in March of 2024 and now being challenged in the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. It argues that the Final Rules are sound and should be upheld for seven articulated reasons, taking into account the arguments made by petitioners and amici curiae in the Eighth Circuit. Background: Sotalol is an antiarrhythmic for which an intravenous (IV) form became available in 2015. Studies suggest it is safe and effective for treating pediatric arrhythmias, with fewer effects on physiologic parameters and cardiac output than amiodarone, and it does not appear to be associated with its long-term risks. However, data in pediatric patients remains limited. This study aimed to characterize the use of intravenous sotalol in pediatric intensive care admissions and compare its use and outcomes with intravenous amiodarone and procainamide. Neighborhood Impacts Of Gentrification On Urban Communities, J Coley

In many mid-sized U.S. cities, university and hospital expansion has spurred new development while displacing long-established Black communities. This study examines how Black homeowners and tenants in Buffalo’s Fruit Belt neighborhood navigate institutional gentrification driven by the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Using interviews and story circles with 50 residents, the research reveals that most residents support neighborhood improvement but demand development without displacement. Participants report rising property taxes, rent hikes, and exclusion from planning processes that threaten community stability and wealth. Despite these challenges, residents organize through efforts like the Fruit Belt Community Land Trust to resist displacement and promote …

Background Unprecedented, forced displacement, especially from conflict and war areas, requires addressing resultant mental health issues. Aim Refugees experience mental and physical health problems due to post-displacement stressors, and the pervasive stigma associated with refugee status can exacerbate these difficulties, highlighting the need for a comprehensive assessment tool to understand various facets of refugee stigma. Method We developed the refugee stigma scale (RSS), consisting of 43 items informed by the literature, qualitative and quantitative data. The scale includes four theoretical dimensions of stigma: perceived community stigma, experienced stigma, anticipated stigma and internalised stigma.
