Quality Improvement Project: Impact Of An Onboarding Program On Novice Nursing Clinical Adjunct Faculty Self-Efficacy, Tonie Metheny

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Many nursing colleges rely on adjunct faculty to deliver the clinical curriculum (i.e., skills lab, clinical instruction, simulation, etc). Without a structured approach to orienting novice adjunct clinical nursing faculty to their roles and responsibilities, educational outcomes may be negatively impacted. Nursing literature documents the impact of a structured orientation program on novice self-efficacy. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to evaluate the impact of an orientation program on novice nursing adjunct clinical faculty self-efficacy with the Academic Clinical Nurse Educator (ACNE) core competencies. Self-efficacy was assessed using the Academic Clinical Nurse Educator Skills Acquisition Tool (ACNESAT). The …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A magnesium alloy containing Ca, Ti, Zn, and In was synthesized via high-energy ball milling of elemental powders followed by spark plasma sintering. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy revealed a homogeneous matrix with dispersed Mg-rich phases and intermetallics. Potentiodynamic polarization tests revealed low corrosion current density (9.6 f 2.1 mu A/cm2), a noble corrosion potential (-1197 f 4 mVSCE), and a clear passive region, indicating excellent corrosion resistance. Nanoindentation tests showed high hardness (2.61 f 0.21 GPa) and elastic modulus (55.35 f 5.47 GPa), exceeding those of commercial Mg alloys.

Early Visual Predictors Of Progression To Alzheimer’S Disease And Dementia With Lewy Bodies, Abril Baez Nov 2025

Early Visual Predictors Of Progression To Alzheimer’S Disease And Dementia With Lewy Bodies, Abril Baez

Master's Theses

We examined whether specific visual cognitive skills predict progression from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer’s disease (AD), or dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The Benson Complex Figure Task (BCFT) was used to measure visual perception and construction (copy), and visual memory (recall). National Alzheimer Coordination Center longitudinal dataset included participants who remained stable (MCI-stable; n =2630), progressed to AD (MCI-AD; n =798), or progressed to DLB (MCI-DLB; n =59). Baseline BCFT scores were entered into logistic regression models predicting diagnostic outcome. Impaired copy performance was significantly associated with MCI-DLB (B = 0.79, OR = 2.21, BCa CI [0.26, 1.36], …

Fetal Microchimerism Of The Eye Lens, Jamie Moubarak Nov 2025

Fetal Microchimerism Of The Eye Lens, Jamie Moubarak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fetal microchimerism (FMc) is the presence of a small fetal cell population in the mother, sometimes exhibiting stem cell–like properties. FMc has been observed within many placental mammal organs, except the eye. We used Yspecific PCR on genomic mouse DNA to test the hypothesis that fetal microchimerism can also be found in the lens. Of the parous females tested, we detected an Ssty2-specific amplicon in 83% (5/6) of samples and an Sry-specific amplicon in 2/4 samples. 100% (5/5) of non-age-matched parous females were positive for both primers. These results provide evidence that cells of fetal or placental origin …

Modeling And Optimizing Real-Time Telescope Interaction For Multi-Wavelength Observation Of Gamma-Ray Bursts, Ye Htet, Marion Sudvarg, Honghao Yang, Jeremy Buhler, Roger Chamberlain, James Buckley Nov 2025

Modeling And Optimizing Real-Time Telescope Interaction For Multi-Wavelength Observation Of Gamma-Ray Bursts, Ye Htet, Marion Sudvarg, Honghao Yang, Jeremy Buhler, Roger Chamberlain, James Buckley

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-wavelength observation of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) requires real-time interaction among multiple telescopes. A gamma-ray telescope detects and localizes a GRB in the sky and must then communicate with an optical telescope to direct the latter toward the GRB as quickly as possible. We previously developed software for ADAPT, a suborbital gamma-ray telescope, to localize GRBs in real time, on a timescale shorter than that of the GRB itself. This work therefore studies progressive localization, in which ADAPT computes a series of increasingly accurate location estimates during a GRB to enable a partner instrument to more rapidly find it. We describe …

Connected-Component Labeling Using Hls For High-Energy Particle Physics Instruments, Nick Song, Marion Sudvarg, Roger Chamberlain Nov 2025

Connected-Component Labeling Using Hls For High-Energy Particle Physics Instruments, Nick Song, Marion Sudvarg, Roger Chamberlain

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many instruments used in high-energy particle physics observations, e.g., gamma-ray telescopes, use FPGAs for front-end signal processing of raw sensor data. The use of high-level synthesis (HLS) to express the signal processing algorithms has the potential to significantly reduce development time for new instruments of this type. We describe our experience with one of the computational stages in the signal processing pipeline, island detection, exploring its implementation across multiple configurations: 1D versus 2D islands, and 4-way versus 8-way connected-component labeling (CCL) in the 2D configuration. We report resource usage and performance for both configurations of 2D island detection, including the …

Exposure to campus suicide poses a significant threat to adolescent mental health. While childhood psychological abuse (CPA) is a known vulnerability factor for depression, the mechanisms linking this early adversity to depressive symptoms (DS) following acute trauma remain unclear. This study aimed to test a chain mediation model where CPA contributes to DS through the sequential effects of psychological trauma (PT) and anxiety symptoms (AS). In a cross-sectional study of 1603 adolescents exposed to a campus suicide event, participants completed self-report measures for CPA, PT, AS, and DS. Chain mediation analysis revealed a significant direct effect of CPA on DS. …

The Transitional Human Being: Literary, Journalistic, And Cinematographic Representations Of The Twentieth- And The Twenty-First-Centuries Italy, Ron Kubati Nov 2025

The Transitional Human Being: Literary, Journalistic, And Cinematographic Representations Of The Twentieth- And The Twenty-First-Centuries Italy, Ron Kubati

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

This book analyzes the crisis of the idea of human being based on timeless notions, in the Euroamerican context, as seen primarily through literature and cinema. It focuses on Italy, which has been and remains a crossroads for diverse cultural and political currents—open to Mediterranean cultural influences while remaining within a typically Western cultural context. The “new man,” defined by Corrado Alvaro during his trip in Russia in 1934 as “transitional,” implies a human being with a fundamental need for change. Instead of the “new man,” Italo Calvino in the 1960 preface to his I nostri antenati wrote about the …

Effects Of Residual Pah Exposure From Firefighters’ Skin And Turnout Gear On Biospecimen Microrna Expression, Jooyeon Hwang, Jenny R Gipson, Chao Xu, Timothy Vanwagoner, Xin Xu, Robert J Agnew, Willard M Freeman

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Firefighters are routinely exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during fire suppression activities, molecular biomarkers reflecting such exposure remain underexplored. Thus, we explored an integrated exposure assessment framework linking PAH contamination on turnout gear and skin to changes in microRNA (miRNA) expression in skin and blood biospecimens. Our goals are to evaluate the relationship between fire-related PAH exposure and miRNA expression profiles in firefighters, and to identify candidate miRNA biomarkers of occupational exposure. This prospective study enrolled 25 firefighters. PAHs on turnout gear and skin were quantified post-fire using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Concurrently, skin tape strips and blood were collected …

High-grade astrocytoma with piloid features (HGAP) is a recently described IDH-wildtype tumor with limited literature describing its imaging features. We present our institution's experience and the largest imaging-focused cohort of HGAP reported to date, offering a comprehensive analysis of MRI features of seventeen intracranial and one spinal HGAP, while introducing novel imaging features that have not been previously described. These include focal areas of diffusion restriction, surrounding spiculated, finger-like enhancement and increased perfusion metrics. Additionally, we highlight imaging features of HGAP arising in patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1, such as intraventricular tumor spread, unusual temporal lobe location and multifocal presentation.

Advancements In Understanding Spasticity: A Neuromusculoskeletal Modeling Perspective, Mohammad S Shourijeh, Argyrios Stampas, Shuo-Hsiu Chang, Radha Korupolu, Gerard E Francisco

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Spasticity, a complex consequence of upper motor neuron lesions, poses challenges for clinical assessment due to its neural and mechanical origins. Traditional scales like the Modified Ashworth and Tardieu Scales provide subjective, context-limited insights, often missing spasticity's dynamic nature. Neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) modeling offers objective, quantitative insights by integrating patient-specific muscle-tendon properties, reflex dynamics, and multi-joint biomechanics. This scoping review examines advancements in spasticity modeling, comparing mechanical, neurological, and integrated approaches, and their applications in conditions like cerebral palsy and stroke. We highlight barriers to clinical translation, including computational demands and regulatory challenges, and propose future directions, such as real-time simulation …
