The Design Research Of "Tema": Exploring Intentional Acts Of Taking Time And Effort In A Contemporary Society, Tianshuo Lu, Takuma Ishikawa
IASDR Conference Series
In today’s hyper-efficient world, why do people engage in activities that require time and effort? This research explores the causes and meanings of such behaviors through the Japanese concept of “tema”, defined as intentional, non-optimized engagement where the process holds intrinsic value. Using workshops and qualitative interviews, we identify four key elements of “tema”: time, body, creativity, and value. These deliberate actions foster personal meaning, emotional satisfaction, and deeper connection with the material world. Building on these insights, we propose a design potential that applies “tema” as a framework for creative practice. Rather than reinforcing a binary between efficiency and …

Designing Intuitive Interfaces For Feature Steering Of Llms, Allison Huang, Yihyun Lim
Designing Intuitive Interfaces For Feature Steering Of Llms, Allison Huang, Yihyun Lim
IASDR Conference Series
Feature steering enables users to strengthen or weaken concepts (features) that an LLM has already learned in realtime. It has emerged as an alternative to prompting, allowing continuous rather than discrete control over model behavior. However, given the technical knowledge required to extract and then steer on features, this process is mostly limited to technical researchers. We seek to build a graphical user interface that makes steering accessible to the layperson. Existing interfaces prioritize flexibility over intuition, overwhelming users with the sheer number of options for what to prompt or what features to steer on. We conducted a user-centered design …

It evaluates changes in students' learning engagement through questionnaires and focus group interviews. The participants were 44 design students at a university of technology, and the course lasted nine weeks. Although students were initially unfamiliar with the POGIL model, which led to some adverse reactions, they demonstrated positive growth in collaboration, participation, and reflective learning. Statistical results indicated upward trends in skills, performance, …

Amid the widely misunderstood textile waste crisis, this study explores how to raise awareness through accessible, play-based learning. During iterative workshops guided by the Stanford Design Thinking framework, participants designed educational board games, such as Aftermath, that positioned players as everyday stakeholders navigating real-world sustainability challenges. As the games evolved, so did their participants – shifting from passive learners to active co-creators in cycles of play, learning, empowerment. The collaborative design journey prompted critical reflection on individual roles within larger systems, leading to increased awareness and noticeable shifts in daily consumption habits. Aftermath and the other co-created games ultimately became …
