Up to 65% of veterans deployed in combat or returning from combat regions such as Afghanistan and Iraq meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis, yet up to 50% do not receive specialized mental health treatment. On October 17, 2020, the United States government passed legislation to increase and improve mental health services for veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) agreed to submit a plan that bolsters the mental health workforce in its facilities by recruiting licensed professional mental health counselors (LPMHCs). Although this legal statute intends to enhance the VA mental health workforce with LPMHCs, recent memorandum published …

Car-T Cell Therapy Milestones In Treating Hematologic Malignancies, Dusit Jit-Ueakul, Piyanuch Kongtim
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Chimeric Antigen Receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy has emerged as a revolutionary treatment modality for hematologic malignancies, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). This innovative approach involves the genetic engineering of a patient's own T lymphocytes to express chimeric antigen receptors (CARs), which enables these cells to specifically recognize and eliminate malignant cells expressing target antigens. Clinical trials have demonstrated remarkable efficacy, with significant rates of complete remission and durable responses observed in patients who have relapsed or are refractory to conventional therapies. As advancements in CAR technology continue, there is potential for …

Diagnostic Stewardship Considerations In Infectious Diseases, Shawn Vasoo
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Diagnostic stewardship in infectious diseases is crucial to ensure that the right test is performed for the right patient for the right reasons at the right time, with the right interpretation which results in the right treatment, optimizing patient care. Managing clinicians have a critical role to play in thoughtful decision making in the pre- and post-analytic phases of test selection, interpretation and subsequent action. They also need to have a good understanding of the analytic phase of testing (test performance characteristics and limitations). In this paper, diagnostic stewardship across the main testing modalities for infectious diseases (culture, serology and …

Introduction: Pterygium is a growth of fibrovascular tissue that originates from the conjunctiva and extends onto the cornea. It can destroy the Bowman’s membrane layer and superficial stroma of the cornea. Therefore, pterygium may affect corneal biomechanical properties.
Objectives: To compare corneal biomechanical parameters using Corvis ST between eyes with and without pterygium in the same patient.
Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 27 participants (mean age 59.67 ± 12.06 years) with unilateral primary pterygium. Each subject underwent ocular examinations, and pterygium size was measured. Corvis ST (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) was used to measure corneal biomechanical properties. …

Black tea (BT) is a popular beverage known for its diverse phytochemical composition and potential physiological effects. Honey, on the other hand, is a natural sweetener with a rich history of culinary and medicinal use and has long been used for its potential health benefits. This study was undertaken to determine whether a three-day consumption of honey-sweetened black tea (HSBT) will significantly alter the systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and blood glucose (BG) levels in young, healthy female adults. The study was conducted over a 3-day period, involving 30 young …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose – This review paper aims to critically examine the discourse on gender equality in Japan, focusing on its socio-cultural, economic and political dimensions. By synthesising existing literature, it provides a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and barriers that influence the gender equality debate in Japan, while identifying gaps and opportunities for future research and specifying where practice can be recoupled to policy. Design/methodology/approach – An integrative literature review was conducted across four key institutional domains – markets, government/public sector, families and education – analysed at the macro, meso and micro levels. The synthesis is integrative rather than exhaustive, prioritising …

Regulatory agencies worldwide have implemented stringent measures to monitor and reduce Salmonella contamination in poultry products. Rapid quantitative detection methods enable producers to identify contamination early, implement corrective actions, and enhance food safety. This study aimed to develop and optimize a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor for the quantitative detection of Salmonella Typhimurium in ground chicken. The sensor surface was functionalized with a well-characterized monoclonal antibody specific to Salmonella flagellin, and an SPR workflow was established for quantitative analysis. Ground chicken samples were inoculated with four S. Typhimurium strains at contamination levels ranging from −0.5 to 3.5 Log CFU/g and …

Lost Lake Holdings, LLC v. Town of Forestburgh
On Appeal from the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 22-cv-10656-VB (Hon. Vincent L. Briccetti)
From the Summary of the Argument
As the district court seemed to recognize early on, JA-1506, the Town of Forestburgh is not going to allow Appellants to build a residential community for Hasidic Jews. Once the developers purchased a shovel-ready property for that purpose, the Town—in the words of one prominent resident and former member of the Comprehensive Plan Review Committee—“circle[d] the wagons.” JA-1570. That former committee member (along …

Advancing Cybersecurity Practice: Explainable Machine Learning For Network Intrusion Detection, Adam Grabowski, Shengjie Xu
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
This research investigates explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) integration within machine learning (ML)-based intrusion detection systems (IDS), focusing on distinguishing malicious from benign network activities. We employed Random Forest and XGBoost models evaluated on widely recognized datasets, including NSL-KDD and UNSW-NB15, using both binary and multi-class classification tasks. The objective was to enhance cybersecurity operations through improved model transparency and interpretability. By integrating SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) and LIME (Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations), the study offers comprehensive global and local insights into model decision-making processes. Results demonstrate SHAP's effectiveness in providing a broad, dataset-wide understanding of feature interactions and importance, while …

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
The Cybercamp is a Cybersecurity summer camp for high school students that has been held for the last nine years at a Hispanic Serving Institution. Since its inception in 2016 the Cybercamp has undergone several transformations in response to budget reductions and the COVID pandemic, to finally become its current version: a rich, hands-on learning experience that we believe is easily replicable even in resource-challenged environments.
In this paper, we document the transformations of the Cybercamp and discuss the developed curriculum and materials in hopes that others will reuse, adapt, and improve upon them. In the Cybercamp, we apply active …
