The Rhetoric Of Imperial Felicitas As A Political Tool In Late Antiquity, Martin Shedd

This article surveys the rhetoric of imperial felicitas (good luck) in Latin literature of the fourth and early fifth centuries in response to Erik Wistrand’s monograph Felicitas Imperatoria (1987). By including not only the emperor’s fortunes, but also the fortunes of the political community directly attributed to his presence or actions in its definition, it presents a more complete analysis of relevant political rhetoric. It demonstrates that the tropes of panegyric were manipulated by petitioners to facilitate political action. Finally, it concludes that the author of Historia Augusta intentionally subverts these tropes to envision a different political system for Rome.

Sticker Or No Sticker, That Is The Question: A Test Of Two Competing Hypotheses, Dongdong Yang, Yi Luo, Marylou Naumoff

Stickers, as an important nonverbal communication affordance on social media, have been understudied in Western contexts. This study employed an online survey (N = 300) to test two competing hypotheses—the social compensation and withdrawal hypotheses—to examine how personality traits influenced sticker use for emotional expression and self-presentation among U.S. college students. Results demonstrated that when communicating with a new friend on their mobile messenger, participants used stickers more frequently for self-presentation than emotional expression. Moreover, loneliness was positively related to neuroticism and negatively related to agreeableness and extraversion. BACKGROUND: Vasoactive agents are a critical supportive therapy for children with sepsis. We describe the choice and use patterns of vasoactive agents in children with sepsis.

METHODS: Prospective observational study conducted in 11 hospitals in Australia and New Zealand through the Paediatric Research in Emergency Departments International Collaborative (PREDICT) Network from April 2021 to December 2023. Children aged 0-< 18 years with suspected sepsis were included. Children admitted to hospital and treated with parenteral antibiotics and either 1) a provisional diagnosis of sepsis, and/or 2) treatment for suspected sepsis (fluid bolus to treat poor perfusion). The frequency and sequence of use of vasoactive agents, and contributors to the choice of initial vasoactive were collected.

FINDINGS: 6232 children with suspected sepsis were included; median age of 2.1 years (IQR 0.3-7.1 years), in-hospital mortality of 60 (1.0%), in whom a subset of 306 (4.9%) met Phoenix sepsis criteria. Vasoactive agents were used in 179 (2.9%) children overall …

This study focuses on designing and optimizing a geothermal thermoelectric generator (GTEG) system in Saudi Arabia, leveraging the country's geothermal potential. The optimization process investigated key parameters such as substrate materials, thermoelectric leg length, and dimensionless thermal and electrical conductance. Utilizing advanced modeling tools, namely the System Advisor Model and RETScreen Expert, critical technical parameters such as capacity factor, yield factor, and performance ratio, alongside key economic indicators including levelized cost of energy, payback period, and net present value are evaluated. This paper focuses on how medical bills and financial hardship are related to healthcare access in adults in the United States, based on the results of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). In particular, it examines the hypothesis that those with problems paying medical bills have a higher tendency to delay or ration medical care or health insurance cover offsets this effect. Logistic regression models were used to determine the relationship between financial hardship, delayed care, and psychological distress and demographic and socioeconomic variables including age, education, race, and poverty status. Viktor Robertovich Tsoi (1962-1990), co-founder, frontman, and lyricist of the band KINO, is per-haps the most beloved figure to have emerged from the Leningrad underground rock music scene of the late Soviet period. Known for his masterful lyricism and creative use of abstract themes, Tsoi remains a cultural icon in Russian-speaking communities around the world. However, the ambiguity of his lyrics, as well as the complex political history of his song “Khochu peremen!” (I Want Changes), has led these communities to ascribe a variety of political persuasions to Tsoi’s artistry and image posthumously. Features of cardiovascular health such as blood pressure, cardiac output, arterial compliance, and blood viscosity are important in evaluating heart health and disease risk, but are currently largely measured invasively and therefore only in critical settings. Here we explore the potential for Windkessel models to extract cardiovascular features from photoplethysmography (PPG) data in an attempt to evaluate heart health non-invasively. We show the capacity of a constrained Newton's method optimization scheme to estimate parameters and explore the tractability of the resulting parameters. While Newton's method is able to produce parameters that closely approximate PPG data, we found that using a …
