Hybrid Modeling For Electrochemical Systems, Luis Alejandro Briceno-Mena

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The discovery of new materials like catalysts, polymeric films, and biomolecules, is driven by industrial needs such as improving reaction or separation selectivity, enhancing therapeutic effects on medical treatments, or reducing costs of replacement. However, deployment of these advances in industrial applications is often hindered by the lack of models needed for design and optimization. Due to the novelty of materials and devices, experimental data and first principles' knowledge are scarce, making it hard to build models either via data-driven or knowledge based approaches. In this context, a way to efficiently combine domain knowledge with data could provide a pathway …

Cyberphysical Systems And Energy: A Discussion With Reference To An Enhanced Geothermal Process, Keshav Kasturi Rangan, Henrique Oyama, Ilham Azali Assoumani, Helen Durand, K.Y. Simon Ng

Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications

As cyberphysical systems research advances, energy systems will be able to benefit from the developments. In this section, we discuss several points in two newer areas for cyberphysical systems research in chemical engineering: 1) cybersecurity of process control systems; and 2) quantum computation of control actions. The discussion is presented in a general manner, with relevance to flow systems or under traditional control laws (e.g., proportional control). However, to showcase energy systems relevance, we will provide links, at intervals, between the developments discussed and enhanced geothermal systems with energy production through the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC).

Microalgae Immobilization With Filamentous Fungi: Process Development For Sustainable Food Systems, Suvro Talukdar

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Demand for sustainable food sources has increased because of the rapid growth of the world's population.  In this study, microalgae cells of Haematococcus pluvialis were immobilized using the edible fungal strain Aspergillus awamori for potential food applications. The study investigated the impact of fungal loading, pellet geometry, and initial microalgae cell concentration on the immobilization performance and product characteristics. It was found that higher fungal loading and larger fungal pellets contributed to increased immobilization performance while increased initial microalgae concentration inhibited the process. Larger fungal pellets had decreased biomass density, which led to decreased surface concentration of immobilized microalgae but …

State Estimation, Covariance Estimation, And Economic Optimization Of Semi-Batch Bioprocesses, Ronald Hunter Alexander

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One of the most critical aspects of any chemical process engineer is the ability to gather, analyze, and trust incoming process data as it is often required in control and process monitoring applications. In real processes, online data can be unreliable due to factors such as poor tuning, calibration drift, or mechanical drift. Outside of these sources of noise, it may not be economically viable to directly measure all process states of interest (e.g., component concentrations). While process models can help validate incoming process data, models are often subject to plant-model mismatches, unmodeled disturbances, or lack enough detail to track …

Optimal Design And Operation Of Integrated Hydrogen Generation And Utilization Plants, Ijiwole Solomon Ijiyinka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There are considerable efforts worldwide for reducing the use of fossil fuel for energy production. While renewable energy sources are being increasingly used, fossil fuel still contribute about 80% of the energy used worldwide. As a result, the level of CO2 is still increasing fast in the atmosphere currently exceeding about 410 parts per million (ppm). For reducing CO2 build up in the atmosphere, various approaches are being investigated. For the electric power generation sector, two key approaches are post-combustion CO2 capture and use of hydrogen as a fuel for power generation. These two solutions can also …

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis And Control Of Chemical Processes Using Dynamic Operability, San Quan Dinh 2023 West Virginia University

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis And Control Of Chemical Processes Using Dynamic Operability, San Quan Dinh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Nonlinear dynamic analysis serves an increasingly important role in process systems engineering research. Understanding the nonlinear dynamics from the mathematical model of a process helps to find the boundaries of all achievable process conditions and identify the system instabilities. The information on such boundaries is beneficial for optimizing the design and formulating a control structure. However, a systematic approach to analyzing nonlinear dynamics of chemical processes considering such boundaries in a quantifiable and adaptable way is yet to exist in the literature. The primary aim of this work is to formulate theoretical concepts for dynamic operability, as well as develop …

Investigating The Support For Agility In Developing Government Software Systems: A Case Of Three East African Countries, Leonard Peter Binamungu

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Agile Software Development Methods support an iterative and incremental way of developing software systems while responding to change by prioritising various aspects at different times. This differs from traditional sequential methods like Waterfall, in which one software development stage has to be completed before starting the next stage. To produce software systems that meet the requirements of their institutions, several governments in Africa have issued standards and guidelines to be followed during the development of government software systems. Such standards and guidelines specify the specific activities and deliverables for each stage of software development. While well-intentioned, such guidelines and standards …

Strategies for mitigating the impacts of cyberattacks on control systems using a control-oriented perspective have become of greater interest in recent years. Our group has contributed to this trend by developing several methods for detecting cyberattacks on process sensors, actuators, or both sensors and actuators simultaneously using an advanced optimization-based control strategy known as Lyapunov-based economic model predictive control (LEMPC). However, each technique comes with benefits and limitations, both with respect to one another and with respect to traditional information technology and computer science-type approaches to cybersecurity. An important question to ask, therefore, is what the goal should be of …

Though dynamic operation of chemical processes has been extensively explored theoretically in contexts such as economic model predictive control or even considering the potential for cyberattacks on control systems creating non-standard operating policies, important practical questions remain regarding dynamic operation. In this work, we look at two of these with particular relevance to process safety: (1) evaluating dynamic operating policies with respect to process equipment fidelity and (2) evaluating procedures for determining the parameters of an advanced control law that can promote both dynamic operation as well as safety if appropriately designed. Regarding the first topic, we utilize computational fluid …

Cybersecurity has gained increasing interest as a consequence of the potential impacts of cyberattacks on profits and safety. While attacks can affect various components of a plant, prior work from our group has focused on the impact of cyberattacks on control components such as process sensors and actuators and the development of detection strategies for cybersecurity derived from control theory. In this work, we provide greater focus on actuator attacks; specifically, we extend a detection and control strategy previously applied for sensor attacks and based on an optimization-based control technique called Lyapunov-based economic model predictive control (LEMPC) to detect attacks …

Typical control designs in the process systems engineering literature have assumed that the primary sensing methodologies are traditional instruments such as thermocouples. Dig- italization is changing the landscape for manufacturing, and data-based sensing modalities (e.g., image-based sensing) are becoming of greater interest for plant control. These considerations require novel test/evaluation solutions. For example, process systems engineering researchers may wish to test image-based sensors in simulation. In this work, we provide preliminary thoughts on how image-based technologies might be evaluated via simulation for process systems.

Cybersecurity of control systems is an important issue in next-generation manufac- turing that can impact both operational objectives (safety and performance) as well as process designs (via hazard analysis). Cyberattacks differ from faults in that they can be coordinated efforts to exploit system vulnerabilities to create otherwise unlikely hazard scenarios. Because coordination and targeted process manipulation can be characteristics of attacks, some of the tactics previously analyzed in our group from a control system cybersecurity perspective have incorporated randomness to attempt to thwart attacks. The underlying assumption for the generation of this randomness has been that it can be achieved …

Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications

With commercial space travel now a reality, the idea that people might spend time on other planets in the future seems to have greater potential. To make this possible, however, there needs to be flexible means for manufacturing in space to enable tooling or resources to be created when needed to handle unexpected situations. Next-generation manufacturing paradigms offer significant potential for the kind of flexibility that might be needed; however, they can result in increases in computation time compared to traditional control methods that could make many of the computing resources already available on earth attractive for use. Furthermore, resilience …

Next-generation manufacturing involves increasing use of automation and data to enhance process efficiency. An important question for the chemical process industries, as new process systems (e.g., intensified processes) and new data modalities (e.g., images) are integrated with traditional plant automation concepts, will be how to best evaluate alternative strategies for data-driven modeling and synthesizing process data. Two methods which could be used to aid in this are those which aid in testing data-based techniques on-line, and those which enable various data-based techniques to be assessed in simulation. In this work, we discuss two techniques in this domain which can be …
