Performance And Stability For Room Temperature Ionic Liquid Membranes For The Dehumidification Of Methane, Dora Frances Sullivan-González 2014 University of Mississippi. Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College

Performance And Stability For Room Temperature Ionic Liquid Membranes For The Dehumidification Of Methane, Dora Frances Sullivan-González

Honors Theses

The biogas production from organic waste—animal, sewage, landfill material— could be a valuable renewable fuel. Before this biogas—predominately bio-methane— can be converted to fuel, it must be dehumidified. Typically membrane-based gas dehumidification uses hydrophilic polymer membrane materials, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and cellulose acetate (CA). The main problems with polymer dehumidification membranes are methane loss and the susceptibility of polymer materials to plasticization by H2O. Room temperature ionic liquid membranes (RTIL- membranes), according to recent literature, are not plasticized by water and have large water/CH4 selectivities. We built on the initial literature RTIL-dehumidification data by looking at a series of …

The Cooling Effect Of Cryotherapy On Power And Accuracy In The Pitching Arms Of Baseball Players, David Kimble Wilbanks 2014 University of Mississippi. Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College

The Cooling Effect Of Cryotherapy On Power And Accuracy In The Pitching Arms Of Baseball Players, David Kimble Wilbanks

Honors Theses

As the human body does work, energy is released in the form of heat. The ability to perform the same action repeatedly and at the same intensity requires energy to be maintained. By preserving energy in sports, a reduction of injuries and an increase in performance duration would most likely be observed. More specifically in sports, for 200 years of baseball history, the pitcher has attempted to keep their arm warm during resting intervals of a game, in belief this would help sustain their level of performance. This study attempted to overturn this view. I hypothesized that by cooling their …

Differential Spectral Imaging Of The Cn Violet Band In Laser-Induced Plasmas On Tnt Simulant Molecules, J. Merten, M. Jones, S. Hoke, S. Allen

Publications

Dual channel emission imaging of m-nitrobenzoic acid and benzoic acid was performed in order to visualize the morphology of the CN violet band emission of a TNT analogue. The CN channel was corrected for continuum emission using a simultaneously imaged background channel. Simultaneous dual channel imaging alleviated problems with shot to shot variation in the plasma morphology due to the friable substrates and showed differences between plasmas formed on the two targets.

Degradable Nanocomposite Preformed Particle Gel For Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery Applications, Paul Tongwa 2014 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Degradable Nanocomposite Preformed Particle Gel For Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery Applications, Paul Tongwa

Doctoral Dissertations

”This work presents two new materials that can be potentially used in conformance control to increase ultimate oil recovery from mature oilfields.

The first product is a degradable nanocomposite preformed particle gel for enhanced in-depth mobility control. Three different types of degradable nanocomposite preformed particle gels were synthesized. These three nanocomposite hydrogels were made using Laponite XLG, Calcium Montmorillonite, and Sodium Montmorillonite nanomaterials. It was observed that after degradation, Laponite XLG nanocomposite hydrogels had the highest post-degradation viscosity (4437 cp), followed by sodium nanocomposite hydrogels (129 cp), and lastly calcium nanocomposite hydrogels (75.5 cp). Thus, degradable Laponite XLG nanocomposite hydrogels …

Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Flow Of Pebbles In A Pebble Bed Nuclear Reactor, Vaibhav B. Khane 2014 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Flow Of Pebbles In A Pebble Bed Nuclear Reactor, Vaibhav B. Khane

Doctoral Dissertations

"The Pebble Bed Reactor (PBR) is a 4th generation nuclear reactor which is conceptually similar to moving bed reactors used in the chemical and petrochemical industries. In a PBR core, nuclear fuel in the form of pebbles moves slowly under the influence of gravity. Due to the dynamic nature of the core, a thorough understanding about slow and dense granular flow of pebbles is required from both a reactor safety and performance evaluation point of view.

In this dissertation, a new integrated experimental and computational study of granular flow in a PBR has been performed. Continuous pebble re-circulation experimental set-up, …

Design Of Three Different Particle Size Distributions In Silver Paste Through Computer Simulation For Higher Electrical Conductivity, Kyungdeok Jang

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In the field of printed electronics technology, researchers have tried to print highly conductive electrodes with fine width and height in order to manufacture high performance devices.

The purpose of this research is to print particle monolayer silver patterns which have better electrical conductivity than existing ones. The key idea of this experiment is to analyze silver inks with different sized particles. Let us consider a particle monolayer pattern printed with silver ink consisting of mono-sized particles. Inside of the pattern, there are some vacant spaces between the particles, which can lead to low electrical conductivity and discontinuity of the …

Natural Selectivity Of Nickel And Vanadium In Crude Oil, Olienka P. De La O Fernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Nickel and Vanadium have always been found in crude oil all around the world. The metal content is found mainly in porphyrin structures in the asphaltene fraction of the petroleum. In order to determine the reason for this natural preference, a set of experiments testing thermodynamics, kinetics, and other factors were performed. Candidate metalloporphyrins containing Vanadyl, Chromium, Iron, Nickel, Copper and Zinc were analyzed through chemical reactions characterized using Silica Column Chromatography, HPLC, MS and UV-Visible. Theoretical analysis of the stability of metalloporphyrins was conducted using DFT/NRLMOL for computational calculation. The analysis of all factors leads us to conclude that …

Predicting Propylene Loss With Inferential Model Development Using Design Of Experiments (Doe) And Historical Data, Jeffrey Allen Wheeler

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Inferential models are a highly researched topic as the science of digital automation becomes more prevalent as information is in abundance. Welldeveloped inferred models can augment the use of analyzers in steady state processing and highly correlated ones can even replace online analytics. The use of design of experiments (DOE) inferred models with historical process data and a rigorous plant simulator can reduce the case study duration while achieving a high degree of accuracy. This paper uses surface response and full factorial models as the first step in model development, and then uses actual historical plant data to create a …

Finding and developing a safe and effective method for hydrogen storage is integral to its use as an alternative source of energy. The goal of the studies described in this Thesis was to investigate the feasibility of developing combustible hydrogen-generating compositions based on ammonia borane and novel energetic materials such as nanocomposite and mechanically alloyed reactive materials, recently obtained by Prof. Edward Dreizin's team at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Such compositions could be stored for long time and release hydrogen on demand, upon ignition. The first phase of the research included thermodynamic calculations for combustion of ammonia …

A Circuit-Based Algorithm For Two-Phase Flow At The Pore Scale In Porous Media, Todd Dorethy 2014 University of Texas at El Paso

A Circuit-Based Algorithm For Two-Phase Flow At The Pore Scale In Porous Media, Todd Dorethy

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Models of two-phase flow in porous media are of practical interest in many fields of science and engineering such as in oil recovery and hydrology. For this class of problem, an immiscible fluid is injected into a single-phase, porous medium to evict its valuable, native fluid. Because the aim is to amass as much of the indigenous fluid as possible, models attempt to output reliable flow regime patterns depicting how well the invading fluid displaces the native fluid.

Flow regime patterns generally depend upon the geometry of the domain, stimulation at the boundaries, and properties of the invading and native …

Development Of A Pressure Swing Adsorption Process For Co2 Capture From Flue Gas Using Solid Amine Sorbents, Anahita Abdollahi Govar 2014 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Development Of A Pressure Swing Adsorption Process For Co2 Capture From Flue Gas Using Solid Amine Sorbents, Anahita Abdollahi Govar

Theses and Dissertations

Solid amines are comprised of adsorbent materials, like silica gel, that contain amine based organic compounds, either physically or chemically, attached within their pores. The major characteristic of these sorbents that makes them interesting for CO2 capture from flue gas is that unlike zeolites they are not negatively affected by the presence of water. The current work has been focusing on the development of a novel PSA cycle for CO2 capture from flue gas using a solid-amine sorbent composed of PEI physically immobilized on a commercial silica substrate. The goal was to achieve > 90% recovery and > 95 vol. …

Metathesis Reaction Of Ethylene And 2-Butene On Molybdenum-Based Catalysts, Benjamas Netiworaruksa

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This dissertation studies and develops the supported molybdenum catalyst for metathesis reaction of ethylene and 2-butene to produce propylene. It was found that the major factor affecting the catalytic performance for metathesis reaction is the catalyst support. From this study, it was firstly revealed that the suitable support for molybdenum-based catalyst is the mixed support of alumina and zeolite. The catalyst containing alumina support prepared from aluminium nitrate physically mixed with HBeta support could provide high selectivity of propylene. The optimum ratio of the composite support of alumina and zeolite was 3:1. However, the most optimum support obtaining propylene selectivity …

Electrospinning Applications Air Filtration And Superhydrophobic Materials, Negar Ghochaghi, Adetoun Taiwo

Graduate Research Posters

Electrospinning is a widely applicable technique that generates non-woven fibers in the micro and nano range. In this project two of its applications are highlighted namely filtration media and enhancement of wettability. The first project demonstrates that electrospinning can be used to produce new fiber filtration media with controlled microstructure. The bimodal and unimodal orthogonal and random filters were made and characterized against their filtration efficiency and pressure drop. Figure of Merit (FOM) was also calculated and discussed. It is shown that the FOM increases when the electrospun fibers are arranged into alternating layers of aligned course and fine fibers. …

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis Of Pd Nanoparticles Supported On Fe 3o4, Co3o4, And Ni(Oh)2 Nanoplates And Catalysis Application For Co Oxidation, Hany A. Elazab, Sherif Moussa, B. Frank Gupton, M. Samy El-Shall

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we report a simple, versatile, and rapid method for the synthesis of Pd nanoparticle catalysts supported on Fe3O4, Co3O4, and Ni (OH)2 nanoplates via microwave irradiation. The important advantage of microwave dielectric heating over convective heating is that the reactants can be added at room temperature (or slightly higher temperatures) without the need for high-temperature injection. Furthermore, the method can be used to synthesize metal nanoparticle catalysts supported on metal oxide nanoparticles in one step. We also demonstrate that the catalyst-support interaction plays an important role in the low …
