Factors That Lead To Poor Oral Health In Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jaskiran Kaur Bains

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Maintaining dental health is vital as it contributes to the psychological well-being of an individual and the overall systemic health through preventing chronic diseases. Unfortunately, poor oral health has been identified as a common trend in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). There is limited research regarding the barriers that result in rates of increased dental manifestations in patients with ASD compared to neurotypical individuals. This study strived to identify the barriers that contribute to poor oral health in individuals with ASD in order to establish interventions to break those barriers and improve overall dental health in the Autism community. …

Dental Hygiene Students' Matching Accuracy When Comparing Antemortem Dental Radiographs And Oral Photographs To Simulated Postmortem Winid3® Odontograms, Brenda T. Bradshaw, Amber W. Hunt, Emily Ludwig, Tara L. Newcomb 2023 Old Dominion University

Dental Hygiene Students' Matching Accuracy When Comparing Antemortem Dental Radiographs And Oral Photographs To Simulated Postmortem Winid3® Odontograms, Brenda T. Bradshaw, Amber W. Hunt, Emily Ludwig, Tara L. Newcomb

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

Matching dental antemortem (AM) and postmortem (PM) data for human identification is especially challenging when the workforce is limited. Dental hygienists have served mass fatality incidents (MFIs) due to dental-related expertise. However, forensics within dental hygiene education and research on transferable skills is limited. This qualitative balance design study assessed senior dental hygiene students' match accuracy of simulated cases varying in dental identifiers based on AM full mouth series (FMS) radiographs and oral photographs to PM WinID3® odontograms to demonstrate possible disaster victim identification (DVI) transferable skills gained during formal education. A convenience sample of senior dental hygiene students ( …

Space Maintenance In The Primary And Mixed Dentitions, Giovana Anovazzi Medeiros DDS, MSc, PhD, Chia-En Tsai DDS, James R. Boynton DDS, MS 2023 University of Michigan School of Dentistry

Space Maintenance In The Primary And Mixed Dentitions, Giovana Anovazzi Medeiros Dds, Msc, Phd, Chia-En Tsai Dds, James R. Boynton Dds, Ms

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Primary teeth serve many critical functions in the growing child: they allow for proper chewing function for appropriate diet and nutrition, help in speech production and development, promote self-esteem, and importantly preserve space for eruption of the succedaneous permanent dentition. Premature loss of a primary molar can cause a loss of arch perimeter and negatively impact the normal eruption path of premolars. Space maintenance is an approach to minimize or prevent untoward consequences after unavoidable loss of a primary molar. Several types of space maintainers can be used to preserve arch length, including fixed unilateral space maintainers, such as the …

Keeping The Journal In Focus, Christopher J. Smiley

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This editorial delves into the motivations behind young dentists and dental students joining the Association and highlights a recent study's surprising findings. Impact Of Treating Maternal Periodontal Disease On The Risk Of Preterm Birth And Low Birth Weight: An Umbrella Review Of Systematic Reviews, May Salama, Abdullah Al-Taiar

College of Health Sciences Posters

Pregnancy involves complex physical and hormonal changes that significantly impact almost every organ system, including the oral cavity. The presence of oral disease in women has consequences for both their child and their health. The two main oral conditions linked to pregnancy are gingivitis and periodontal disease. Several studies have demonstrated that there is a positive association between periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth (PTB) and low birth weight (LBW). PTB and LBW are among the leading causes of perinatal mortality and morbidity. It has been hypothesized that periodontal disease may cause PTB and/or LBW either …

Dentistry And The Law: How Does An ‘Assignment Of Benefits’ Work?, Dan Schulte JD 2023 Kerr Russell

Dentistry And The Law: How Does An ‘Assignment Of Benefits’ Work?, Dan Schulte Jd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The use of an assignment of benefits form in dental practice is explored in this article, with a focus on its potential benefits and limitations. This form allows patients to assign their dental plan benefits to the provider, enabling direct payment for services. However, its acceptance by dental plans varies and is often subject to state and federal regulations. While assignment of benefits offers a pathway to independent fee setting and potential billing for any balance exceeding benefits, legal and regulatory considerations must be addressed to fully implement this approach.
