The use of low-level laser (LLL) may be an useful tool to promote reduction of muscular pain caused by TMD. Aim: This study evaluated the immediate efficacy of low-level laser therapy on women reporting pain and diagnosed with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Methods: Diode laser (GaAlAs) at 790 nm wavelength (infrared spectrum) was applied as experimental treatment. Irradiations of 1.5 J/cm² were made at 4 points of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and of 3 J/cm² at 3 points in the temporal muscle. An electromyographic (EMG) evaluation of the masseter and anterior temporal was done at the following intervals ...

Thermo-Mechanical Stress In Multilayered Dental Post Due To Temperature Gradient, Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim Abu Kasim N.H.

Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim Abu Kasim N.H.

Objective: To analyse thermo-mechanical stress in endodontically treated teeth restored with Multilayered Structured Dental Posts (MSDPs) under cold and hot conditions using Finite Element Analysis (FEM). Methods: Three MSDPs of multilayer design of xTi-yHA composition added to a zirconia layer (model A), an alumina layer (model B) and a titanium layer (model C) were compared with zirconia (model D) and titanium (model E) posts. The fractions of Ti and HA was varied gradually. Changes in temperature of an endodontically restored tooth model were calculated as a result of hot and cold response. The resulting thermo-mechanical stresses were analysed and compared ...

Inherent Differential Propensity Of Dental Pulp Stem Cells Derived From Human Deciduous And Permanent Teeth, Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim Abu Kasim N.H. 2010 Department of Conservative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry Building, University of Malaya

Inherent Differential Propensity Of Dental Pulp Stem Cells Derived From Human Deciduous And Permanent Teeth, Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim Abu Kasim N.H.

Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim Abu Kasim N.H.

Introduction: Lately, several new stem cell sources and their effective isolation have been reported that claim to have potential for therapeutic applications. However, it is not yet clear which type of stem cell sources are most potent and best for targeted therapy. Lack of understanding of nature of these cells and their lineage-specific propensity might hinder their full potential. Therefore, understanding the gene expression profile that indicates their lineage-specific proclivity is fundamental to the development of successful cell-based therapies. Methods: We compared proliferation rate, gene expression profile, and lineage-specific propensity of stem cells derived from human deciduous (SCD) and permanent ...

Significant Indicators Of Intent To Leave Among Army Dental Corps Junior Officers, Johnette Joy Shelley

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To identify the significant predictors associated with Army Dental Corps Junior Officers' intent to leave the military. Methods: A secondary data analysis was conducted utilizing the responses from the 2009 Army Dental Officer Retention Survey. The 92 item questionnaire consisted of questions addressing retention issues. Although the survey was distributed to all Army dental officers, only results from junior officers were considered for this study. Results: Forty-six percent of junior officers completed the survey (N=577; n=267).Fifty-eight percent of respondents reported an intent to leave the military prior to retirement. In the final regression model, six variables ...

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Access And Utilization Of Dental Services Among Children In Iowa:, Alejandra Valencia 2010 University of Iowa

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Access And Utilization Of Dental Services Among Children In Iowa:, Alejandra Valencia

Theses and Dissertations

Even though the oral health of Americans has improved greatly in the last 50 years, some specific groups of the population have been left behind. Latinos, children and adults, bear a disproportionate burden of oral diseases. Latino children, the fastest growing minority group of children in the US, are affected disproportionately by oral diseases like dental caries compared to other groups. Understanding the difficulties and barriers that these children have to utilize dental care will help us in the future to develop effective programs to reduce health disparities in this segment of the population.

The purpose of this study is ...

Ethics, Empathy, And The Education Of Dentists, David A. Nash 2010 University of Kentucky

Ethics, Empathy, And The Education Of Dentists, David A. Nash

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Professional education in dentistry exists to educate good dentists-dentists equipped and committed to helping society gain the benefits of oral health. In achieving this intention, dental educators acknowledge that student dentists must acquire the complex knowledge base and the sophisticated perceptual-motor skills of dentistry. The graduation of knowledgeable and skilled clinicians in dentistry is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for ensuring quality oral health care. The further requirement is the commitment of graduates to applying their abilities with moral integrity: providing appropriate and quality care in their patients' best interest. Ultimately, good dentistry depends on individuals committed to treating ...
