Sources For Neo-Satirical Drawings: Surrealist And Conceptual Processes, Douglas C. Brittain

All Master's Theses

This study was concerned with social conunent and the intensity of emotional expression. The work was not intended to be a sociological study with illustrations, nor as an over-literate approach to art, but rather as a study of fine art problems. The problems and questions raised were as follows: (1) How are contradictions resolved when strict definitions of fine art and caricature are combined in drawing? (2) How are surrealist and conceptual processes integrated with biomorphic and mechanical forms? (2) What are the possible symbols and techniques for expressing ideas and emotions about the "mechano-organic" theme? This study was intended …

Experiments In The Decorative Process Of Salt-Glazing, James A. Thornsbury Aug 1970

Experiments In The Decorative Process Of Salt-Glazing, James A. Thornsbury

All Master's Theses

It is the purpose of this study to explore the process of salt-glazing and to develop a representative range of colored salt glazes by the application of soluble and insoluble metallic salts to the surface of the clay bodies. Varying percentages of clay forming constituents and metallic salts were tested to determine their effects on the range and characteristics of the colors obtained, and the ability of the clay body to take a salt-glaze. Firing techniques, kiln atmosphere control, and salting procedures were studied to determine their effects on the color of both clay and glaze, the ability of the …

Investigations In Mixed-Media Printmaking, Jarold H. Powell Jan 1970

Investigations In Mixed-Media Printmaking, Jarold H. Powell

All Master's Theses

The device man uses to transport himself is one of his dearest possessions and one of his biggest problems. The relationship between man and his machine is the basis for the content of this thesis. Since walking became impractical, men have grown dependent physically, emotionally, psychologically, economically, and socially on a personal means of transportation. My own ideas and experiences are the source for the content of this series of works.

The Development Of A Clay Body With Compatible Glaze Formulae, Nancy Travers May 1968

The Development Of A Clay Body With Compatible Glaze Formulae, Nancy Travers

Dissertations and Theses

There are two aims in this thesis: the first is to ascertain something of the physical and chemical properties of clay and glazes and how to handle and control them. A project such as the development of a clay body and glaze formulae serves to isolate the various functions of the materials and give a clear understanding as to their use and potentials. This enables one to visualize and manipulate materials creatively with a reliable prediction as to their behavior. Spencer Moseley in Art Education supports this, saying: "The quality of a man’s production depends upon (1) the idea, the …

Primitive Art As It Relates To Contemporary Design, Sandra Miller May 1967

Primitive Art As It Relates To Contemporary Design, Sandra Miller

Senior Scholar Papers

For the most part, my project has been of an individually rewarding nature due to an extensive amount of reading and studio work. My paper functions as the major means of communication of my own experiences and findings. It is an attempt to share with others the ideas which I have found particularly stimulating and worthwhile during the course of the year. In other words, the written portion does not intend to summarize all of the phases of primitive art which I have studied during the past year; rather, it is indicative of the type of pursuit with which I …

Art Of Goya As A Significant Reflection Of His Time, William Post May 1967

Art Of Goya As A Significant Reflection Of His Time, William Post

Senior Scholar Papers

This thesis examines the story of how Goya came to be the artist he was and of the times which made him what he was, and which he so well mirrored. Francisco Goya y Lucientes is a remarkable figure in the history of art. Rarely has an artist arisen from such a cultural vacuum; rarely has an artist done so much to establish a cultural reputation for his country; rarely has an artist reflected so accurately the spirit of his time; and rare is the artist who has such an important influence on all the significant art of the future.

A Comparative Study Of Two Methods Of Teaching Art At The Fourth Grade Level, Mary Carroll Nelson

It was the purpose of this study to compare the effects of visual, technical instructions on the creativity and technical mastery demonstrated in the art work of a fourth grade class. The experimental group received verbal stimulation and verbal instructions plus visual instructions of technical nature. The control group received the same verbal stimulation and verbal instructions without the visual instructions. The art products from both classes were submitted to a panel of judges for a rating on, (1) whether there were observable differences between the groups in creativity and technical mastery, and (2) if there were, which group excelled …

Musilian Concept Of Modern Man, Cynthia J. Peters Jan 1963

Musilian Concept Of Modern Man, Cynthia J. Peters

Senior Scholar Papers

German-Austrian Robert Musil (1880-1942) is considered an artist with an extremely unorthodox conception of art to a basic human problem. In his time, there existed a dissociation of substance from social values. Musil actually started with this foundation in considering the taunting dilemma that the accelerating technology of the century is overstepping each day the ability of the human mind to adjust to it. Musil maintained that social organization, patterns of thought and cherished ideals correspond to a reality that no longer exists

Cézanne, The Formal Approach, Annette B. Picher Jan 1957

Cézanne, The Formal Approach, Annette B. Picher

Senior Scholar Papers

The understanding and illustration of the most important formal principles in the work of Paul Cézanne was the object of my study, beginning with the approach to form of two other periods before Cézanne, in order to get a perspective view of his place in the time-stream of art. My study focuses on still life because of its expediency for handling in the studio and also because the still life painter is more directly involved with formal techniques of painting, including design and execution. He is more involved with how he paints than what he paints; he must interpret the …

The Role Of Art In The Complete Development Of A Christian Personality, Sister Loretta Ann Mccarthy Jun 1952

The Role Of Art In The Complete Development Of A Christian Personality, Sister Loretta Ann Mccarthy

Art & Art History ETDs

A survey of ancient literature reveals that art as an area in school life is becoming increasingly recognized as tremendously significant to a complete participation in the creative activities of life. A critical point has been reached in so far as art has begun to be recognized as an integral part of the school program rather than an educational frill offered for those students who have difficulty with the academic program or as a concession to the few talented students.

It is the purpose of this study (1) to outline briefly the theory of art education as applied to the …

The Importance Of The Study Of Anatomy To The Figure Artist, Dorothy Young Jan 1937

The Importance Of The Study Of Anatomy To The Figure Artist, Dorothy Young

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Anatomy is of little use to the student if he has not grasped how to draw form, but it helps him to invent form. Without an understanding of how to invent, we can only make flat plans of the anatomy inside the outline; but once the drawing of bones and structure has been understood, all the anatomy that the student knows may be to his advantage.

An artist must know as much science as he can use. If he knows more, there is a chance that sciences will use him. It is the structure of the body he must grasp …

Skill And Accuracy Test In The Use Of Hand Woodworking Tools, Warren Prescott Dayton Jan 1927

Skill And Accuracy Test In The Use Of Hand Woodworking Tools, Warren Prescott Dayton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In view of the fact that the greatest argument in favor of any educational test is its need, one is compelled to keep this in mind while introducing a new test and give this factor first consideration. It is safe to say that any instrumental- ity that will aid the teacher in the understanding of his pupil and his present and potential ability is needed. Truly the various intelligence, aptitude and content tests, now in ever increasing use, have justified their existence upon this foundation of pedigogical need.
