Any verbalization of an artistic statement is by its very nature, an inadequate interpretation. However, I feel there is some merit in a concise declaration of my general concepts in the study. This paper represents a summation of the concepts and directions involved in my studio investigation in painting and drawing.

Specifically, it is within the scope of man's altered and effected perception of reality that I have based the studio research.

The Flowering Rhinoceros: An Extension Of Photography Into Other Media, Lawrence Leslie Bullis

This paper develops, in a literary form, thematic material derived from fourteen photographically etched metal pieces, two photo-serigraphs, and six photographically produced intaglio prints. The narrative takes the form of an allegorical fantasy which contains a practical attitude toward photographic alchemy. New insights are provided into the origins and nature of the photographic medium in the light of the symbolic context of the artwork.

Illustrations of the artwork from which this paper derives are provided.

Plactic is the material I chose to communicate my ideas. Named for its ability to be shaped, melted, bent, moulded, and extruded into an infinite number of forms, is one of two reasons I used it. The other is its concept is familiar to modern man and even a definition of him.

To make the communication bridge complete the stulptures are constructed to allow the viewer to take part in the final form. By moving the work, he is as involved in the concept, form, and material as I have been in making the piece.

This thesis is a report on a pottery analysis which was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Anthropology at Portland State University. The earthenware materials involved were collected from three surface sites on Batan Island, Philippines, during the summer of 1969.

The interpretation of these potteries was based upon the direct-historical approach to archaeological research. The use of this method was proposed after a cursory examination of the earthenwares revealed certain general similarities between the archaeological potteries and the ethnographically-known wares produced in the area at the present time.
