The following report is an account of my growth and exploration as a painter. The project that was the springboard for this exploration was to create a series of paintings inspired by the fiction that I had previously written as a creative writing minor. I felt that writing could be used as a stimulus to create great paintings, and that painting and writing were perhaps more connected than I knew. The arching limb of a tree defined a periphery of space from which the gentle curve of a sleeping figure arose in my mind, barely emerging from the surrounding atmosphere (fig. 1). This painting, painted in the fall of 1995, marked my initial interest in the human figure as a subject of formidable intrigue, challenge and inspiration. This Senior Scholar project has been an attempt to develop an abstract style of representation. My title, "Realistic Abstraction", seems to be a contradiction, but I am using this terminology to refer to the degree of abstraction that I attempted to reach in my work, where the nonobjective elements are equally as important as the representational elements. In my Senior Scholar project I manipulated simple geometric shapes in an attempt to construct organic forms using transparent planes, created areas, and implied volumes. The sculpture, which was influenced by my interest in the Renaissance, Russian Constructivism, and the Minimalists, can best be divided into five series; each series is identified by a physical and a conceptual change of ideas. The first series focused on the conceptual ideas of each piece and expressed a lack of concern for the physical properties of the objects. I pursued the senior scholar project under the title and thought, Figurative Sculpture and Drawing. While studying sculpture and drawing, I spent time coming to know their basic languages and exploring a variety of media in each. Throughout the year, I worked with a figurative subject, addressing ideas proposed last fall; including sculptural elements like volume, mass, line, and balance; and various drawing techniques. I have worked directly from the model in order to understand the form and structure of the human body. The exploration of the idea of the horse is a very complex and open quest. Primarily it entails some conception of what the idea of the horse is. In choosing to title the project as such, I was attempting to indicate that what was of major interest to me was the representation of those qualities of the horse which are abstract and intangible as well as the physical qualities of the horse. Because of this interest, much of my work is concerned with movement, gesture, and the effects of structure, or lack thereof, on movement and gesture.

For my freshman Jan Plan at Colby I painted a mural in Runnals Union illustrating a William Blake poem. This effort began a four year painting project which I pursued my sophomore and junior years by finishing the Hall of the Machines in Runnals and by commencing the Paper Wall in Roberts. The primary purpose of this study is the exploration of color relationship in original serigraphs wlth an emphasis on the illusions of depth that they produce. This study limits color to its ability to create illusions of space, design to its formal aspects, and the medium to silk screen printing.
