The Impact Of Murals On Traffic Safety: A Behavior And Crash Analysis, Maria Cecelia Cruz Nov 2022

The Impact Of Murals On Traffic Safety: A Behavior And Crash Analysis, Maria Cecelia Cruz

Civil Engineering ETDs

ABSTRACT

This research analyzed changes in motor vehicle volumes and motor vehicle speeds after the installation of an intersection mural in Albuquerque, NM and changes in crash frequency after mural installations in Philadelphia, PA. Data was collected manually on site for the Albuquerque study and secondary data – including installation dates and physical characteristics – were used for the Philadelphia crash analyses. Statistics were computed to determine trends in motor vehicle speeds and volumes relative to the Albuquerque mural installation. A geographic information system (GIS) spatial analysis and t-test statistical analyses were used to determine which Philadelphia murals saw significant …

Reflected Dispositions, Taylor Hedum May 2019

Reflected Dispositions, Taylor Hedum

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

My MFA Thesis Exhibition, Reflected Dispositions, features an installation of sculptural objects and light projections in an unconventionally dark gallery setting. Spotlights shine onto the reflective sculptures, and the light is cast onto the surrounding environment. Motors or water deform the sculptures to create dynamic motion in the projections, with the cyclical changes and tempo meant to evoke a state of reflection in the audience. The percepts magnify the nuances of the material; to reveal the previously unseen.

My interest to control light stems from experiments with materials and the unexpected reflections that they produce. Since then, I have learned …

Isolate To A Controllable Space, Simone Frances May 2019

Isolate To A Controllable Space, Simone Frances

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

Centered around the public arena of institutional architecture and its impact on the social being, in this recent work, entitled, Isolate to a Controllable Space, I focus on questions such as how do public environments work to sustain and reiterate meaning through our own sense of where we should be, or where we are permitted to be. I use photography to approach questions that ask how do systems and infrastructures obtain functionality through our participation; acknowledging that systems are conductors of the personal and participatory process of identification and categorization.

Subverting The Nature Of Thing: Gender Agency In Spiritual Systems And Contemporary Performances Of Zimbabwe's Shona People, Rujeko S. Dumbutshena Apr 2019

Subverting The Nature Of Thing: Gender Agency In Spiritual Systems And Contemporary Performances Of Zimbabwe's Shona People, Rujeko S. Dumbutshena

Theatre & Dance ETDs

Gender, ritual and performance in the Shona cultures of Zimbabwe, are inexorably linked. They demonstrate how the flexibility of the Shona spiritual systems offers agency to ritual leaders and practitioners. The story of Murumbi Karivara, a Shona rainmaker from the 19th Century, provides the inspirational imagery for the researcher’s Masters of Fine Arts thesis concert DE RERUM NATURA - the way things are (performed on September 2 and 3, 2018). The researcher positions herself among contemporary Shona artists living in Zimbabwe and abroad who negotiate the spaces they occupy during ceremonies, on concert stages, and in institutions; to find autonomy …

Recipe For Disaster, Zac Travis Mar 2019

Recipe For Disaster, Zac Travis

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

Today’s rapid advances in algorithmic processes are creating and generating predictions through common applications, including speech recognition, natural language (text) generation, search engine prediction, social media personalization, and product recommendations. These algorithmic processes rapidly sort through streams of computational calculations and personal digital footprints to predict, make decisions, translate, and attempt to mimic human cognitive function as closely as possible. This is known as machine learning.

The project Recipe for Disaster was developed by exploring automation in technology, specifically through the use of machine learning and recurrent neural networks. These algorithmic models feed on large amounts of data as a …

462, James Anthony Martin Jan 2019

462, James Anthony Martin

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

As far as significance of 462, it has two meanings in this context. First, it represents me. 462 was my motorcycle racing number. Secondly, it is the theoretical idea of the next stage of human evolution. Right now, humans are composed off 44 and 2 chromosomes. Adding 2 more would make us 46 and 2, also known as, "Christ Consciousness". it is obviously not science, but I like the idea of humans obtaining a higher consciousness.

To See From Somewhere, Ariel C. Wilson May 2018

To See From Somewhere, Ariel C. Wilson

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

To See from Somewhere is a series of monochrome sculptural and flat inkjet prints that expand space between traditional photographic binaries: black and white, front and back, flat and dimensional. On the surface, each piece absorbs light and reflects a dull gradient or graduated scale of tones. Lurking between shades of grey, they are gradual and metered in their transitions. I explore the boundaries of my ability to discern between two shades on a gradient and on a scale. I notice my reliance on observable difference to distinguish any given tone from another and relish the spaces where I cannot. …

Pulse Flow, Hollis Moore

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

My urgency to celebrate "pulse flow" and unfold knowledge and power surrounding water resources in the delta is emphasized through preformative field research in place, dialogue with local community members, and the presentation of maps as layered, fluid and permeable.

It's Hard To Kill, Fatemeh Baigmoradi

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

In this project, I have collected photographs from other famailies and reproduced them, before treating them with fire. I make them look convincingly original, and I try to establish a realtionship between the real world and the prosthetic world.

A Comparative Study Of Two Methods Of Teaching Art At The Fourth Grade Level, Mary Carroll Nelson May 1963

A Comparative Study Of Two Methods Of Teaching Art At The Fourth Grade Level, Mary Carroll Nelson

Art & Art History ETDs

It was the purpose of this study to compare the effects of visual, technical instructions on the creativity and technical mastery demonstrated in the art work of a fourth grade class. The experimental group received verbal stimulation and verbal instructions plus visual instructions of technical nature. The control group received the same verbal stimulation and verbal instructions without the visual instructions. The art products from both classes were submitted to a panel of judges for a rating on, (1) whether there were observable differences between the groups in creativity and technical mastery, and (2) if there were, which group excelled …

The Role Of Art In The Complete Development Of A Christian Personality, Sister Loretta Ann Mccarthy Jun 1952

The Role Of Art In The Complete Development Of A Christian Personality, Sister Loretta Ann Mccarthy

Art & Art History ETDs

A survey of ancient literature reveals that art as an area in school life is becoming increasingly recognized as tremendously significant to a complete participation in the creative activities of life. A critical point has been reached in so far as art has begun to be recognized as an integral part of the school program rather than an educational frill offered for those students who have difficulty with the academic program or as a concession to the few talented students.

It is the purpose of this study (1) to outline briefly the theory of art education as applied to the …
