Where Are The Women? A Feminist Field Guide To The Museum, Taylor Weaver Oct 2021

Where Are The Women? A Feminist Field Guide To The Museum, Taylor Weaver

Theses

Linda Nochlin’s seminal 1971 essay, “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” was at the fore of the great battle cries of many feminist scholars that drew attention to the limitation’s that female artist’s face in the art world. Women have systematically been left out of the art historical narrative while their male counterparts remain at the forefront.

There are many women that are very prominently represented in museums. They are largely nude and have been represented by male artists. While I do not argue that nudity in paintings should not exist, I do insist that museum goers become …

The Last, Tony D. Riel Mar 2021

The Last, Tony D. Riel

Theses

This thesis shares a collection of paintings that demonstrates my understanding of how to paint still lifes using oil paint. The tools, preparation, steps, and techniques other still life painters have used to create paintings were examined in-depth and were applied by me to create my still life paintings. Food is the subject of my paintings. My family’s eating habits and wastefulness of food were my sources of inspiration. My observations took place at the end of mealtimes because that is when I noticed that my family tends to not eat every piece of food. This often means there are …

Enduring Covid-19 As Nyc Subway Riders, Ruben Cuevas

Theses

My thesis paper describes my master art project of paintings about the New York City Subway riders commuting routine prior and during the Coronavirus. As a regular subway rider myself I am closely connected with this particular art project because I witnessed the subway riders endure the most contagious viral pandemic of the 21st century. My thesis recounts how from a few sketches and photo shots of people in the subway this art project developed into a collection of paintings carefully completed on large linen canvas and acrylic medium. The initial set of my paintings narrate typical NYC subway rider …

The Sublime & The Picturesque In Art, James M. Chleboun Apr 2014

The Sublime & The Picturesque In Art, James M. Chleboun

Theses

Is it possible to create "classical'' landscape pictures of today? The genre of drawing and painting landscapes is the subject for this thesis. For comparing for relevancy, the binary topic is two aesthetic terms, the Sublime and the Picturesque. I will show what the art critics and artists say about those terms with several historical and contemporary artists a<; examples. I will explain what I did with some of my drawings and paintings in relation to the terms within the "classical" composition format.

The challenge for my work is to compose the contemporary landscape using the classical composing principles used by Old Masters. A contemporary German artist has succeeded very well in composing the '·classical·' landscapes of today with modern cultural attributes, but they …

Man : Woman : Human, Maressa Tosto Merwarth Oct 2012

Man : Woman : Human, Maressa Tosto Merwarth

Theses

The present day atmosphere seems to be so much about one or the other. Whether it is politics, religion, or even something as small as Apple or PC, it seems like it is impossible to exist in the middle; you either "are" or "are not." With the blinders firmly strapped on, there is so much not coming into view. By only seeing things in absolutes, is what we DO NOT experience and believe as important as what we DO?

This is a cumbersome question without a simple yes or no answer. However, rather than attempting to create some kind of …

A Potter's Point Of View, Kathy J. Baldwin

Theses

A mature artistic style ln ceramics has the capability of reflecting the potter ✓ s ideas, feelings, and philosophy. Many influences may effect the formation of this style. As the artist reacts to various influences a new level of development or maturity may begin. The work displayed in my Graduate Exhibition at Lindenwood College represents six phases of development. Skill in creating wheel-thrown pottery was developed in the first phase by doing production pottery work. The technique of faceting was introduced in the second phase as a result of the influence of Rosalyn Tynge. A more sophisticated appearance was achieved …

Archetypal Art Therapy: A Jungian-Transpersonal Perspective, Barbara Cary Jan 1984

Archetypal Art Therapy: A Jungian-Transpersonal Perspective, Barbara Cary

Theses

Art therapists are well trained in t he Freudian psycho- analytic approach to the unconscious . The expression of the non- verbal symbolic language is often viewed as an act of repression or defense . In this paper, theory and psychotherapy from a Jungian- transpersonal perspective are examined , including Jung's theory of the collective unconscious and archetypes. Inner experience and the symbolic language of psyche are viewed for their positive qualities and their healing potential.

Attitude s of the therapist toward the image and toward the client are re- examined from this alternate viewpoint . The Jungian-transpersonal perspective provides …

The problem of alcoholism is a major health concern in our society . I t is considered to be a disease that is treatable, but not curable . The number of women entering treatment for alcoholism has increased steadily in t he past few years . Since statistics indicate that there is a high rate of relapse and recidivism within this group, treatment methods that can aid in the recovery process are important.

The Role Of Art In The Expression Of Individual And Family Dynamics Related To "Anorexia Nervosa", John Joseph Collins

Theses

Art can be a powerful experience. In this project , the artwork of a client diagnosed as having "anorexia nervosa" is explored in terms of how her art expresses her personal conflicts and family dynamics. Due to the particular quality of the family system of which the anorexic is a part, it is extremely important to involve the family in the treatment plan. For this reason, the emphasis on the whole family , or more specifically, the way they relate with one another, is one prime focus in t he discussion of the client 's artwork in this study. Although …

Phototherapy--A Phenomenologically Based Approach To Psychological Assessment, Sheila Culkin Apr 1980

Phototherapy--A Phenomenologically Based Approach To Psychological Assessment, Sheila Culkin

Theses

In this project the use of phototherapy in the psychological assessment process was proposed and explored. The conceptual roots for the phototherapy assessment used here can be found in phenomenological psychological literature, in the history and exploration of photography as an expressive art medium, and in the work of social scientists researching the use of photography in human study. The study investigates whether the photography, its content as well as its formal elements, i.e. camera angle, framing, perspective, lights and darks, distance of the subject from photographer, can reflect the experience and perception of the photographer. It has as its …

Art Therapy With Mentally Ill Children, Phyllis L. Childers

Theses

This thesis is concerned with the applicability of art therapy for medically ill or injured children and adolescents, The majority of the bibliographic and experiential research comes from work with hospitalized young people, however a hypothesis could be made for the applicability of art therapy for non-hospitalized pediatric patients, as well , Due to the limited amount of available research, this second category can only be addressed briefly in this thesis.

Hospitalized pediatric patients refers here to children and adolescents who are hospitalized for physical illness, injury, or other medical problems, This thesis does not concern itself with patients who …
