Gender Classification: A Convolutional Neural Network Approach, Shan Sung Liew, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Syafeeza Ahmad Radzi, Rabia Bakhteri

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An approach using a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed for real-time gender classification based on facial images. The proposed CNN architecture exhibits a much reduced design complexity when compared with other CNN solutions applied in pattern recognition. The number of processing layers in the CNN is reduced to only four by fusing the convolutional and subsampling layers. Unlike in conventional CNNs, we replace the convolution operation with cross-correlation, hence reducing the computational load. The network is trained using a second-order backpropagation learning algorithm with annealed global learning rates. Performance evaluation of the proposed CNN solution is conducted on two …

Source Detection And Propagation Of Equal Frequency Voltage Flicker In Nonradial Power System, Abdolmajid Dejamkhooy, Ali Dastfan, Alireza Ahmadyfard

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Nowadays electric power quality problems such as flicker (voltage fluctuation) are major concerns of electric companies and industrial consumers. Identification of flicker sources is an important stage in the flicker reduction process. Flicker source can be modeled as a nonlinear load whose admittance is intermittent and time-variant. In the steady state, fluctuation of voltage amplitude is a function of the impedance of flicker sources. In this paper, after calculating the gradient of voltage amplitudes and constructing a Jacobian matrix, criteria for flicker source detection are proposed. Therefore, by measuring voltage and current of each load in the power system, the …

This research introduces an electromyogram (EMG) pattern classification of individual motor unit action potentials (MUPs) from intramuscular electromyographic signals. The presented technique automatically classifies EMG patterns into healthy, myopathic, or neurogenic categories. To extract a feature vector from the EMG signal, we use different autoregressive (AR) parametric methods and subspace-based methods. The proposal was validated using EMG recordings composed of 1200 EMG patterns obtained from 7 healthy, 7 myopathic, and 13 neurogenic-disordered people. A feedforward error backpropagation artificial neural network (FEBANN) and combined neural network (CNN) were used for classification, where the success rate was slightly higher in CNN. Among …

Wideband Analysis Of Planar Scalable Antennas And Pec Bodies Using Cbfm, Sema Nur Koç, Adnan Köksal

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, scattering and radiation from scalable planar bodies are investigated in a wide frequency band. Characteristic basis functions (CBFs) are utilized for this purpose with a different approach. The CBFs for the body are calculated at the highest frequency of interest and reused at other frequencies. As the frequency decreases, the unnecessary CBFs are removed from the basis set. The reduced impedance matrices generated at lower frequencies are also used for the calculation of the ones at higher frequencies. As a result, a significant reduction in CPU time is obtained with the proposed method. Numerical results for the …

A Slotted Aloha-Based Cognitive Radio Network Under Capture Effect In Rayleigh Fading Channels, Muhammed Enes Bayrakdar, Sedat Atmaca, Alper Karahan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a slotted ALOHA-based cognitive radio (CR) network is proposed and the throughput performance of the proposed CR network model under Rayleigh fading channels is examined. Our CR network contains two special groups of users, primary users (PUs) and CR users (CRUs), and they are considered to be sharing a time-slotted-based common communication channel. While PUs can access the channel at any time owing to their legal right, CRUs can only access the channel when it is not occupied by the PUs. In the network model developed, PUs access the channel utilizing time division multiple access as a …

Application Of Kappa Statistics In Sequential Tests For Family-Based Design, FARID RAJABLI 2016 TÜBİTAK

Application Of Kappa Statistics In Sequential Tests For Family-Based Design, Farid Rajabli

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Family-based designs are commonly used in genetic association studies to locate markers associated with diseases. It is a challenging task to collect a large enough sample size, perform a statistical test, and obtain the desired statistical power. The sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) was introduced to overcome the limited sample size problem. However, the drawback of SPRT is that, for the sake of accuracy, the test leaves many markers in a gray zone meaning ``no decision''. In this article, we propose a novel approach: a sequential probability ratio test `plus' (SPRT$+)$ to reduce the number of these gray zone markers. …

tree, a separate parent-child-sister hierarchy is employed independent of the parent-child-sister hierarchy used for the rest of the tree. Two different versions of such a local hierarchy are introduced. The result of the first proposed hierarchy is a faster and smaller footprint, while the second one provides size variation functionality without a significant computational overhead. Complexity comparison between the algorithms based on the introduced local hierarchies and ones based on previous complete binary tree structures reveals that the novel approach brings considerable memory gains and performance boosts to the complete binary tree based algorithms.
