Male Same-Sex Relations In Modern China: Language, Media Representation, And Law, 1900–1949, Wenqing Kang
History Faculty Publications
The article discusses the tension in the Chinese indigenous terminology for male same-sex relations which was similar to Eve Sedgwich's description of the Western modern homosexual/heterosexual definition. It argues that the Western sexological concept of homosexuality was accepted in the early 20th century China and notes that its legal apparatus had no clear stipulations on sex between men. It indicates how writers during the first half of the 20th century were more concerned with the proper gender behavior and the image of the nation than sex itself.
Institutionalizing Ireland’S Industrial Development Authority, 2010 Technological University Dublin
Institutionalizing Ireland’S Industrial Development Authority, Paul Donnelly
Conference papers
Actor-network theory is considered to have great potential for broadening and deepening our grasp of institutional work (Lawrence and Suddaby, 2006). Given its focus on process, ANT offers a means to breathe life into the practices associated with institutionalization. With Callon’s (1986) four moments of translation as analytical lens, and with Ireland’s Industrial Development Authority as empirical example, I seek to address the concerns in the call for papers to reconsider ‘the role of agency, power, persistence and change in the process of institutionalization.’

Dwight Eisenhower And Douglas Macarthur In The Philippines: There Must Be A Day Of Reckoning, 2010 George Fox University
Dwight Eisenhower And Douglas Macarthur In The Philippines: There Must Be A Day Of Reckoning, Kerry Irish
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
In 1935 Major Dwight Eisenhower accompanied General Douglas MacArthur to the Philippines, where MacArthur was tasked with creating a Philippine army capable of defending an independent Philippines. Eisenhower's odyssey in the American colony (1935-39) left him with a deep and indelible negative impression of MacArthur. Historians have disputed the cause and depth of the rift. Ike's disagreements with MacArthur were more philosophical than personal and concerned two significant issues: building an army in a developing but still impoverished country, and the leadership qualities that an American army officer should exhibit and develop in his subordinates. The dispute and resulting antipathy …

Marriage Vows And Economic Discrimination: The Married Teacher Problem, 2010 Marshall University
Marriage Vows And Economic Discrimination: The Married Teacher Problem, Sabrina Thomas
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study analyzes the rapid increase of economic discrimination against married women teachers in the early twentieth century, particularly during the Depression. It challenges the notion that economic discrimination against married women teachers was simple, easy, and largely was unchallenged. I argue that the creation and proliferation of marriage bars in the early twentieth century involved a compounded and multifaceted set of economic and social concerns. Support for this argument is accomplished by examination of the national debate on marriage bars as well as careful investigation of the local debate illustrated in Huntington, West Virginia.
Had Your Imperial Army Not Invaded: Japan's Role In The Making Of Modern China, 2010 Marshall University
Had Your Imperial Army Not Invaded: Japan's Role In The Making Of Modern China, Joshua Hubbard
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
By 1936, the Guomindang had seemingly managed to secure its political dominance by nearly annihilating its main adversary, the Chinese Communist Party. In 1937, the Japanese army began a full-scale invasion of China that would forever change its political landscape. During the subsequent eight-year war, the Guomindang government collapsed, plagued by economic difficulties and internal corruption. Simultaneously, the small group of communists in Yan’an grew into a virulent force of opposition, with vast amounts of territory and the support of the masses. Nearly all components of this drastic turn of events can be linked to the imperialist expansion of Japan. …

To Live And Die In Dixie: Robert E. Lee And Confederate Nationalism, 2010 Western Kentucky University
To Live And Die In Dixie: Robert E. Lee And Confederate Nationalism, Jacob A. Glover
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Robert E. Lee is undeniably one of the most revered figures in American history, and yet despite the adoration awarded to the man over the years, surprisingly little scholarly research has dedicated itself to an inquiry into his nationalistic leanings during the four most important years of his life—the Civil War. In fact, Lee was a dedicated Confederate nationalist during his time in service to the Confederacy, and he remained so for the rest of his life, even after his surrender at Appomattox and the taking of an oath to regain his United States citizenship. Lee identified strongly with a …

Rescripting Stalinist Masculinity: Contesting The Male Ideal In Soviet Film And Society, 1953-1968, Marko Dumančić
History Faculty Publications
This dissertation traces the evolution of a new type of cinematic masculinity in the fifteen years following Joseph Stalin’s death and examines how controversial post-Stalinist movie heroes became a battleground for the country’s postwar values and ideals. During the 1950s and 1960s, postwar Soviet leadership faced the kinds of sociopolitical ruptures that were also evident on the other side of the Iron Curtain; the Communist Party leadership struggled to moderate the combined destabilizing effect of consumerism, a recalcitrant youth (sub)culture, and Cold War anxieties. Nowhere was the angst of the postwar period more obvious than in the way Soviet filmmakers …
"The Urban Praetor's Tribunal" In Spaces Of Justice In The Roman World, 2010 Western Kentucky University
"The Urban Praetor's Tribunal" In Spaces Of Justice In The Roman World, Eric Kondratieff
History Faculty Publications
"Book abstract: Despite the crucial role played by both law and architecture in Roman culture, the Romans never developed a type of building that was specifically and exclusively reserved for the administration of justice: courthouses did not exist in Roman antiquity. The present volume addresses this paradox by investigating the spatial settings of Roman judicial practices from a variety of perspectives. Scholars of law, topography, architecture, political history, and literature concur in putting Roman judicature back into its concrete physical context, exploring how the exercise of law interacted with the environment in which it took place, and how the spaces …
Bowling Green Stock Car Racing, 2010 Western Kentucky University
Bowling Green Stock Car Racing, Jonathan Jeffrey, Larry Upton
SCL Faculty and Staff Book Gallery
Bowling Green became the city of speed immediately after World War II as America began its love affair with the automobile. Stock car racing took the city by storm in its inaugural season of 1951, drawing crowds of up to 7,000 in a city of only 18,000. Soon thereafter, the city attracted the Chevrolet Corvette assembly plant followed by the National Corvette Museum. Images of Sports: Bowling Green Stock Car Racing documents the history of stock car racing in Bowling Green and the emergence of the raceway at Beech Bend Park.
